  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X UPDATE

Who on earth are they!

I remember talking to a 1st about, name omitted due to fear, and asked how he was at hitting marks "hit his marks! you're lucky if he's in the same F'ing room!" was the reply.

Who are they? Jet Li is a great example, so is Jackie Chan.

For Jet Li have a look at the extras on "The One" There is a clip about VFX, and how the VFX guys thought they were just shooting reference for a kick Li was executing to do a CGI replacement in post. Then the dude came in and hit it the exact same way for ten takes like a motion controlled ass kicking. (Says the DVD special feature ...)

A lot of "A listers" aren't on the A list because of any discernible talent, but rather because their name generates box office.

Some relative unknowns are perfect spot on technical performers. I'll mention Barbara Luna and Denise Crosby, both of whom I worked with on Star Trek. I noticed Luna was extremely precise because I pulled on her during principal. I could pull her takes without even looking at the scene, purely by the marks on the handwheel. Denise not only hit her marks, but she raised the game for everyone on set in terms of technical performance.

Of course, part of the art of film making is identifying which is which on set.

It really bothers me how many people here have no understanding of what people in the business do, I'll fight to get the right 1st on a job, they van make or break you. It's not mechanical, it's a performance, timing is everything.

Agreed ... actually one of my big worries as technology advances is that it will be as practical for me to pull my own focus as it is on 2/3" HD. Sure ... I can keep the pictures sharp in that system, but I'll never be able to perform to my best ability as an operator and a focus puller at once!

I worry that producers will not understand that and will start insisting more and more that operators pull their own focus, which will inevitably drive the quality of the end product way down. IMNSHO.

So ... Epic X!

As interesting as Focus Pulling discussions are (Cinematography thread?) any chance we can get back to the very exciting topic of this thread?

EPIC X IS SHIPPING IN A FEW DAYS! I still don't understand all the top mount bottom mount options.

Can some M owners chime in (start a thread) called "Epic Configurations" and post their rigs?
Thank you dearly for trying to get this thread back on track.

We're down to a mere matter of days now... I truly believe this product, even moreso than the RED ONE, will be the revolution that changes the industry. Let's be real, it has already started. Thanks again to Jim & Co. for working so hard to get this right.

Coming from me, this may not mean as much, but I remember David Mullen also commenting on this one time. To me, a top flight focus puller is an artist.. Nothing less. They watch the rehearsals intently, and look for not where to focus, but WHEN to focus. There are OVS two shots that are made or broken by the right focus pulling.. Actors bring a little something different to each take (The good ones) and you may rack on the reaction, but then on another take your forground speaker may slowly turn his head towards the co-star because they feel like giving the scene to them for the reaction, so the AC will pull with the speed of the turn of the head.

I have seen idiot pullers try this and ruin a take, but the masters.. they bring a whole new level to the scene.

No... These guys are artists.. They may have technical skill, but they are artists, and I am in no rush to see them replaced in any way.

Now if you are talking about ONE TYPE of focus pulling, I.E. Tracking Actor from point A to point B.. Then yeah, electronic is fine with me.. But only then.

Jay
+1 Electronic "robo-focus" is great for certain special situations, like very quick dolly-ins to a stationary object, but the rest of the time, please keep your hands off my AC!

So er, Jim or Jarred, not sure how to ask this, but... I was wondering if... between me and you, you could divulge the what the issue is with the lens on the Scarlet?

Oh, and the new releases page looks pretty rad, stoked!

Jim/Jarred, I know the top is changing from what's currently on the Epic-M to the new design, but what about the bottom? Is anything changing that we should be concerned about if a person went ahead and bought something like viewfactor's bottom adapter place and LW 15mm rod system? It would just be nice to make sure to have those accessories on hand when the Epic-X does arrive, instead of waiting.

Mount Update :

Stage 2 + Stage 3 : You get the PL mount and have to buy the Canon mount if you need one.

Stage 4 : You can choose your mount.

I might be out of the loop but the info I'm looking for I can't find. It appears that both the PL and Canon mount are equals in materials and share identical prices. So is Red offering the option of lens mount choices for folks when purchasing their Epic-X? It would be a shame to moth ball a $2000 titanium PL mount but that's what's going to happen in my case.

Not in Stage 2 or 3, but Stage 4, and concurrent non-packaged deals, yes.

I keep seeing references to a shipping date, but I can't find anything qualitative from RED. Could someone point me to something, please? I'm trying to get a grip on how much of this particular date is "rampant rumor" vs "reliable sources".

Hi Kyle

See posts #316 and #421 of this thread. RED has not indicated otherwise, hence everyone still expects the 1st emails to go out this week.

May mean little but the epic software download is now called "shipping" instead of beta. There is no beta. Who knows.

I would also love to know if things are still on schedule for us in the stage 2 line. due to an upcoming shoot in a couple weeks. I know better than to plan on it, but one can dream ...I know it's a long shot...

so who do we talk to about wiring the money in so it's all ready to go with no delays? our bomb squader? Also canon mount still on schedule? backorders on anything?

My spidey-sense tells me that there's some very high up RED people who reeeeeeaaaaalllllly want to blab about how awesome things will be shortly, but can't, for whatever reason.

Just waiting for the tsunami...

P

Nothing to see here, move along.
