Who on earth are they!
I remember talking to a 1st about, name omitted due to fear, and asked how he was at hitting marks "hit his marks! you're lucky if he's in the same F'ing room!" was the reply.
Who are they? Jet Li is a great example, so is Jackie Chan.
For Jet Li have a look at the extras on "The One" There is a clip about VFX, and how the VFX guys thought they were just shooting reference for a kick Li was executing to do a CGI replacement in post. Then the dude came in and hit it the exact same way for ten takes like a motion controlled ass kicking. (Says the DVD special feature ...)
A lot of "A listers" aren't on the A list because of any discernible talent, but rather because their name generates box office.
Some relative unknowns are perfect spot on technical performers. I'll mention Barbara Luna and Denise Crosby, both of whom I worked with on Star Trek. I noticed Luna was extremely precise because I pulled on her during principal. I could pull her takes without even looking at the scene, purely by the marks on the handwheel. Denise not only hit her marks, but she raised the game for everyone on set in terms of technical performance.
Of course, part of the art of film making is identifying which is which on set.
It really bothers me how many people here have no understanding of what people in the business do, I'll fight to get the right 1st on a job, they van make or break you. It's not mechanical, it's a performance, timing is everything.
Agreed ... actually one of my big worries as technology advances is that it will be as practical for me to pull my own focus as it is on 2/3" HD. Sure ... I can keep the pictures sharp in that system, but I'll never be able to perform to my best ability as an operator and a focus puller at once!
I worry that producers will not understand that and will start insisting more and more that operators pull their own focus, which will inevitably drive the quality of the end product way down. IMNSHO.
So ... Epic X!
