Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to this site, but I'm glad to see such an active community of Red camera enthusiasts.

Full-time, I am a motion graphics designer, but I'm simultaneously a budding music video director. I've held various positions on music video shoots and I've designed lots of graphics-based promo material for bands, but this past weekend I had my first chance to truly direct a music video.

The manager of the artist came to me via a referral from a friend of mine who they've known for years. They were looking for an affordable graphics-based music video for a song by a female pop singer. They were willing to pay, so I said I'd be willing to help them out. I expanded upon their idea and wrote up a more developed treatment, which they loved. They told me they knew a videography crew who would supply the camera and operator. I knew from the start it would be a skeleton crew, and I didn't know what kind of gear he would have. Days before the day of the shoot, this videographer finally gets a chance to email me back (turns out he had been shooting a feature all week) and informs me that he will be using a red one, a solid lighting kit, and a bunch of nice prime lenses. I wasn't expecting anything near this fancy, but I was thrilled to hear this.

So the shoot went great. I got everything shot that I needed. We had HD playback and the whole bit. Very exciting day.

But now, being the editor or motion graphics designer for this project, I'm faced with the task of working with the red footage. I've been told a bit about r3d files, Redcine, and such. But I'm wondering if there are any comprehensive introductory tutorials or guides out there for using 4K footage in post. I saw lots of Red tutorials on creativecow.net, but reading those made me feel like I was missing some kind of introductory course.

Anyone know where I can find something like that?

Working with R3D files

Working with R3D files

Are you the only one involved with the post on this project? By my experience and many I've read, getting the most out of R3D footage is not something that happens in a day or a few days. I would say, the R3D format, just like a film negative, and more than most other digital acquisition formats out there, comes with "some assembly required". Of course this is by design, and many consider this a good thing. Working with is involved enough that Red is holding "Reducation" classes, for example there is a 3-day session on post: http://www.reducation.net/

You can also just jump right in with your favorite NLE tools that support R3D, eg FCP, Premiere, Vegas9, etc. Each has their own "quirks" as with any complex tool. See also: http://www.reduser.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5

Thanks jbeale!

Anyone's thoughts on doing keying and color correction right within Adobe After Effects. I'm already on AE 9.0.2 so I should be able to set the linear color thingy accordingly. Are there advantages to doing this all within AE, or do you recommend another route? :conehead:

I'm doing all my keying and colour correction in After Effects.

Works very well.

Well that's good to hear. Are you working with the r3d's right within AE? And was there some process you had to put them through beforehand?

Right now, I'm just waiting to receive all the footage, so I'm doing as much research that I can in the meantime. You advice is appreciated!
