  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC STAGE Clarification and update

Aluminum PL mount is no more... I wonder if the stainless steel PL mount is still on the table? IMO, I don't see a point to the stainless one, but I suppose if enough people want to buy it... It will weigh more than the Ti mount, but should be cheaper. As for what comes in a Stage-3.5 "package" is yet to be seen. I don't think it really matters either way. When Stage-3.5 rolls around you get a trade-in allowance for your RED One body toward an EPIC-X brain, everything else is over and above that. So if they "include" the PL mount, they basically just add it to your order at its current cost and you don't have to consciously add it yourself. Stage-3.5 doesn't have a super-discounted package deal like Stage 2 and 3 have. It's just a trade-in of the RED One body toward a purchase of an EPIC-X brain.

I know what you mean Jeff, but the Canon mount and the PL mount are currently backordered and could remain that way for a while.

If the titanium PL mount will not come with the brain, I want to have that order in as soon as possible for obviously supply reasons.

If it will come with the brain, I would really like to avoid purchasing a surplus one unnecessarily. That $2,000 would more than likely be spent with Red, but on other essential items.

Peter, if Stage 3.5 doesn't come with a Ti PL mount, I'm sure there will be some in Stage 2 or 3 people (like Gibby, for instance) who will only be shooting with still lenses and will sell you theirs... possibly at a discount. ;-)
 
I wouldn't stress over it. The camera is useless without a mount and I doubt RED would ship one out without one unless you had good reason to buy one without a mount -- such as if you were going to use one of the other approved third-party mounts like the Leica-M (can't remember who is making that one) or the Optitek Nikon mount.

Right now, there's no option to pre-order the Ti PL mount as all the cameras are shipping with one and they're allocating them to keep ups with the surge of outgoing EPICs. Canon mount is in a similar situation. The way I understand it is that by the time Stage 3.5 or 4 roll around, the demand for mounts should be satisfied and you'll be able to pick which mount you want with your brain.

Failing that, I'd also subscribe to what Elsie has mentioned. I bet you'll be able to find a second-hand PL mount at a discount. I'm sure there are lots of Stage-2 (and even Stage-3) buyers who are going to exclusively use Canon or Nikon glass with their EPIC and would sell their PL mounts.

Understood ... but when a Stage 3.5 owner sends their Red One MX in, does their resulting Epic-X brain come with or without the titanium PL mount and SSD side module?

If the answer is "Without either one", I'm totally okay with that. I just would like to know so I can order ... or not order ... those items well in advance.
 
Peter, both you and I are Stage 3.5 and so I've appreciated your questions. I can't answer for sure but I think Jim recent post on July 14th, 2011 answers this:

Same goes for 2012 price of EPIC-X Brain. $34,500 + $2000 = $36,500 including Ti PL Mount. Sorry about the oversight.

Correct. Except it comes with a body cap instead of a lens cap :)

Hey, I still knew what you meant. :)

Jarred, will those body caps be available in the store at some point? Might be handy to have one in case something goes screwy in the middle of a mount swap and we just want to cover up.

and

The 2.8 inch touchscreen LCD was scrapped as it was apparently too small to be of practical use.

SSD is standard and pretty much necessary on Epic but, latest word is that there will probably be CF adaptor that slips into the SSD module.

Can't help you on the Stage 3 package...

Is the IO module no longer included?
 
Nope, no Basic I/O Module will be made, but we got the Titanium PL mount and the SSD module in the package for free.
