  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Stage 3 - I am worried

+1 Well expressed observation Brad. Separately, the accessory allocations seem to be as/or equally distressing as the camera production -- seems not to be in adequate lockstep with the camera delivery.

Who would of thought there would be so much drama over this. Remember guys.. the stages are all Optional. We intended these to be a gift.. no matter how much you try and tie that to business planning or compare it to anything else.. it is genuinely intended to be a gift from us to all our great customers. Stage 3 guys were the last group I thought would complain about anything. guess I was wrong.

In our defense, there are very few of us complaining (I only know of this thread) and those who are managed to hold back their complaints/fears for a very long time.

I'm not too worried as I'm pretty sure I'm near the front of the stage-3 line and it's still an unbelievable deal that really gets even more unbelievable each month the accountant depreciates my RED One. I can tell you that any time, day or night, my email is received there will be a mad dash to the office and then to FedEx to overnight 330 ASAP - I'll just see if I can roll the speeding ticket into the cost of shipping :)

EDIT: if anything I'm just excited for everyone to get their Epics and Scarlets so Reduser can get back to normal.

In Reduser, and email to Red One owners.
Oct 30, 2009:

If you choose STAGE THREE and do not execute your purchase in 30 days from notification that your order is ready, you forfeit all future trade-in rights to your RED ONE.

Hey Jim
It would be good to get clarification on this.

Thanks

My two cents...

I decided to skip Stage 3, upgrade my RED One to a MX with SSD, and shoot. When Scarlet-X is available for me, I'll buy one of those, too. Suits my needs, for now. When I need an Epic-X, I'll buy one in cash if it's a big project, or just rent one when I need HDRx or high frame rates.

Good strategy!

Hi Brent

Happy 2012 to you and the family.

Do you have any word on when Stage 3 is going to start, we're all in the dark here and some light would be much appreciated.

Don't have an exact date, lot of moving parts to make sure we minimize the time you are each without your camera. More info coming pretty soon, for sure.

If you want to BETA test the process I will gladly volunteer...

Happy New Year Brent!

Boy stage 3 looked fucken amazing when announced. I have a handicapped Red One due to selling gear in preparation for Epic when announced to deliver in December. I've lost 2 jobs since. My Red is no work horse and stage 3 was the best choice for me.

Choosing Epic M, Stage 2, Scarlet would of been the route to go. So I guess when something looks that good it really isn't. Frustrated as hell.

Brent - how complex is it to process the returned Red Ones, before issuing the Epic?

All we've been told is that warranty conditions (i.e. not installing an unauthorised mount) must be met.
I'm not sure how you check on this, but I can't imagine that it would take days, or even hours. I'd have said minutes.

I'm trying to guess what could hold up the issuing the Epic for the Returned Red One, but I can't come up with anything.

cheers

But... why do that?
Why bother?
To start disputes with camera owners because a port's been damaged thru the wear and tear of normal use?
Or assert that camera took a bump, or maybe, possibly, had a bad cable connected at some stage, causing an issue?

I can't see that being in Red's interest.

Lot's of people here, including a couple from Red, have mentioned the complexity of checking the Red Ones, but I just can't see why, or how, at least not in the context of the Stage 3 trade-in, which is supposed to have nothing to do with the condition of the camera, except for illegal mounts, at least as far as I can think.

You're right.
The wording of the trade-in "up-to" $17,500, is a very recent change in the deal.
I don't believe I have anything to worry about with my stage 3 camera, but it would get some people sweating, I'm sure.

I hope the discovery and billing of wear and tear on a body that Red previously said they'd credit $17,500 for, doesn't create bad blood between Red and some of it's most loyal customers. As soon as people start posting "Hey Red won't give me my Epic until I've paid XXXX for some issue that I never noticed", Red have a nightmare.

+1 I'm a little curios what the 'average' trade-in value will be. I know that things change when it comes to RED, but it was well after Stage 2 closed that Stage 3 $17,500 trade-in was changed to "up-to" $17,500. Obviously all the stages are still a great deal, but if the average trade in turns out to be $15,000 how many Stage 3 people would have opted for Stage 2 instead.

Hopefully that won't be the case at all, I think being in the dark about the process (and timeline) makes it easy to imagine all sorts of possibilities especially the negative ones.

Another thought regarding the trade-in value... What if you have the MX upgrade, is that worth nothing? In other words, lets say you have Camera A with a $5,000 MX chip in it and one bad XLR port, is that camera really worth less trade-in than Camera B a regular M camera with all working XLR ports?

I mean, if RED is going to reuse or resell these units in some way then the MX chip would be important I would think.

I really hope that they are not going to reuse sensors.
Internal electronic is OK maybe for reuse in RedRay palyers, but please, don't reuse sensors.
