EPIC-S...

Kyle, while I am not a RED official, I would give a 99% probability that we will hear the next update only after EPIC-X is flying out the door.

That's supposed to be late August/early September.

I'm very curious about both Scarlet and EPIC-S myself, but I think we just have to be patient. Remember, everything in life changes, including camera specs and delivery dates. What's funny about RED is that the specs always get better and the delivery dates further away - and you can pretty much take that to the bank, for good or no.

Be of good cheer: What's also funny about RED is that they always, but always, deliver. Even the BOMB EVF customers, who had to wait over a year for the product, are happy as clams now that they have it in their hands.

D

One can hope. Well you're right, I will just sit back and wait. A buddy of mine could not wait any longer and got an F3, Very nice camera but....I really want an Epic-S so ill just wait.

Just to add, Red also went silent over the last few months. What used to be a flurry of announcements and discussion went to dead silence. The 8k announcement by Sony? Some real competition? Becoming a mature and more 'real' company? Who knows. I sure would like an update on Epic S (just like so many others), because the clients pressures are real in terms of look and feel and a regular HD camera doesn't always cut it anymore. I don't want to go the DSLR route and the F3, albeit a very nice camera, is not even close to the S - when it kindly makes its appearance. Isn't it a time for at least an UPDATE from RED?

2 days days ago Jarred posted a crazy link that caused people pain/discomfort. Oh, and a bunch of pictures of an EPIC in different configurations and showed off a working rear quad battery module and rear SSD module.

4 days ago the cage and side flags for the RED matte box went on sale.

5 days ago we saw the first public footage from and read the first public opinions on the Canon mount.

12 days ago the BACKPACK system was unveiled.

13 days ago we learned about the new decreased weight for brain, and the free refitting offered to current owners.

About 25 days ago we got a "Significant Update..." from Jim.

And so on...

I was talking about camera updates. Pictures of different configurations, accessories, batteries and all that are nice but they are not significant in the big picture. Many of us already own matte boxes, batteries and support systems. As far as cameras go we are still only talking Epic M. I'd like to hear about Epic X, S and the Scarlets.

Yeah, that "you are an idiot" animation was pretty fun. It's the ah-ha-ha-ha-ha part that makes it jolly.

It's been said by Jim that they're not going to move on Epic-S until after X and Scarlet, and that they'll have to take advantage of economies of scale, a reduced number of parts, etc to get Epic-S out there. To me, that screams development time, and "2012".

Which, of course, is when the Earth will end. So that's no help at all.

All that said, wouldn't it be funny if thousands of little Scarlets already existed in a warehouse somewhere, just waiting for the right moment to make their appearance after X is released? Sorta like that last shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I still say the big surprise at NAB was a truckload of Scarlets for sale, and the ensuing riot, along with perhaps a few cases of hari kiri by other manufacturers of camera systems.

I recall otherwise. Not gonna try to dig it up, but from what I remember Jim or Jarred said that the Epic and Scarlet programs will be releasing independently of each other. Yes, Epic-X is the current priority, but after that is out they will be moving forward with both Epic-S and Scarlet, releasing them as soon as they are ready. So they wouldn't be purposely holding back on Epic-S to get Scarlet out first or putting more focus on one or the other.

I hope you're right on concurrent dev, but it seems so much is dependent on what they learn with X. Yet, Jim did say on page 1 of this thread that they hope to have things shipping this fall. So, fingers crossed.

What I think EVERYONE who is buying an Epic S is worried about, is the pricing.

Hopefully that 12k statement doesn't change.

As with X, I think it will. The bigger question is will is hold until the 2011 price increase and at least let us put an order in.

The parts for scarlet fixed probably are from previouse indications. They were waiting for some parts from Japan, but the projected release date is really near and no news. Hopefully it us being delayed for an upgrade to a very vital part.

As to where ever a company would delay the next major product until they have got on top of the previouse one, at least through the marketing surge to begin the next one, yes companies often stagger product releases. If that is what Red is doing after X, we don't know.

The release of a 32mp camera before Red, maybe an indication that it could have been done in recent years. If you look at the original scarlet models and projected release date, maybe this was what was hoped.

I agree, I am almost certain the price will have increased, but I kind of wish they would have taken deposits on Epic S's that way a definite price would have been guaranteed, much like Epic X holders.

It kind of worries me that the budget I have calculated out for myself might not fit into the new pricing of the S. Im sure it will, but as many things with RED, we are never 100% certain on things, which isn't a flaw, it's just scary.

If you are buying an Epic-S, your life is cinematography. You are willing to spend 12 grand on a body and at least $5000 to $10000 for everything else. You would rather drain your account and capture beautiful images than own a nice car and drive it to the same office park every day.

This passion brings clients, directors and producers back to the table. If the price of a brain increases, if you have to wait a while longer, if for whatever reason the Epic S remains out of reach... you will make great work with lesser tools. If 22,000 becomes 25,000, will that really kill your desire to deliver outstanding digital cinema?

If so, rent instead. Like most people do. Because post hardware and accessories will easily make any price increase look like sales tax.

I'm adding wheels, a seat and a small motor to my Epic. Might as well kill two birds with one stone!

Ryan, I appreciate your wisdom, but I hope you weren't directing it towards me or Jarek as "knowledge" we did not already know.

I think we are 100% aware of every single tiny decision we are making. What do you think im doing now without an Epic S? Im filming my second feature movie within the past 2 months of a Canon 5D. A way lesser tool than the Epic. Ive been filming shorts on a 7D for a year, ive also filmed a couple of shorts and a feature on an EX1.

I understand everything, and if the Epic is out of my reach initially I won't just give up on it. I will keep saving and doing whatever is necessary. But until then I will most likely continue to make movies with a 5D, 7D, or EX1.

Checking out our camera pacakge for a commercial yesterday, all I kept thinking was "damn, I can't wait until this is an Epic." After 3 years of DSLR and EX-1 we're all dying for something better. But S won't come out until after X has satisfied all orders. And Epix-X doesn't exist yet.

In New York, the city just installed clocks to let you know when the next train will arrive. Often times they don't work. No one get frustrated by this, because the clock doesn't make the train come any faster. If Jared were to tell everyone "okay. Let's be real, January," it wouldn't make the wait better. And the date might still change.

I guess my point is after 3 years spent saving 20 grand, a little more $ or time somehow means less than it did after the first Scarlet delay way back when. It's almost like Red has taught us a thing or two about nonattachment. I couldn't save $ at all before I started saving for a camera! I know the last few months seem like the worst, but once the black and red box arrives in your living room, it will all be worth it.

Hey Ryan,

I would like to add that there are over 1,000 EPIC-M's out in the the wild by now... The EPIC is a real camera, not a render.

I'm confident that the X will start shipping very soon and they will roll out very fast. :-)

BTW, congrats for saving for the camera. You will be greatly rewarded in a few weeks...
