I hope you don't mind me asking, but what's wrong with shipping it FedEx or any respectable courrier service offering insurance?

Also from Brazil and I'm gonna do it like I always do, fly to the US, stick it in my bag and fly back. Is there a risk ? Sure ! Is it worth it ? Definitely !

I'm doing the same as Phillipe. I have been saving a ticket I earned with AA miles, just to fly to L.A. and bring it home like it deserves...

Hey Guys, keep in mind that if you take delivery in LA, you will have to pay about 9% sales tax. There may be a way to get it refunded somehow but I've never explored it.

Jim, would it qualify under the USA/AUS Free Trade agreement? Being that it's made in the USA? Also, if you pay RED from your native country and then fly in to pick it up could that be classed as a 'courier service'?

It would be way cheaper to fly to LA to pick up an Epic kit and lenses than to pay 10% customs tariff and then 10% GST on arrival in Australia. Fedex won't release a shipment until they are paid up front for all duties.

Hey Kristian,

Don't think the Free Trade Agreement will change things. If you buy it in the U.S., you pay local tax as it is based on where you take physical delivery. If you bring something into Australia through the airport, you pay local tax. I think the only way to make it work would be to research whether you can refund the California tax at the airport (it's all State tax, not Federal.) You can do this with GST if you prove you are leaving with the goods you bought here.

Paying a customs broker to sort it all out is just going to eat any benefit anyway so it comes down to whether it's worth the time and legwork to do it.

And definitely not cheaper to go pick it up, unless you are there anyway. For my Red One it cost $500 in Fed Ex fees, then about $75 in Australian duty. The GST component was refunded on my next BAS so nothing there. No U.S. sales tax of any kind.

Epics and Scarlets should be much less shipping as the components are all smaller and lighter.

There is no Australian Tariff on cameras but which ever way you physically decide to bring it in you will have to pay GST. If you have some of business structure and are registered for GST this is offset against GST you collect from your customers. Similarly if you are a business and you use a customs broker to clear the goods for you the costs are tax deductable.

What is often identified as Fedex fees also includes GST which they collect as part of the clearance process - I think the current charges directly applicable to Fedex for clearance and associated documentation is around $55.20. You may be pinged for Tariff on some accessories (not a camera) but it is only 5% and if it is of US manufacture I think this is where you win from the US/Australia Free Trade agreement and the Tariff becomes zero

Hi John,

Fed Ex/DHL always call to collect the GST separately, at least in my case they always have.

The real issue here is there is a misconception that it somehow costs less to go pick it up rather than ship. Unless you are there for another reason this is not the case.

Even so, you would have to deal with the 9%+ state tax, which would add thousands by itself.

The Red One and components and camera were very heavy, still it was only about AUD$550 landed when the smoke cleared.

You will never see an airfare that low, much less when you add all of the other expenses like car, hotel etc.

Sure, if you want $550 off your next holiday, then go for it, but the saving itself definitely doesn't justify it, especially with the $2,500 in State tax they will throw on in California. Again, I'm sure you could get that refunded but you are now jumping through hoops or paying someone to deal with it.

And why? Oh yeah, to try to save $550 on shipping.

Think of how much you charge per hour and why you are now putting your valuable time into finding a way around this.

As for bringing professional equipment back in the country illegally, that's up to you but shouldn't factor into this discussion.

I think I need to go back to school - I either missunderstood what you said or did not espress myself the way I intended. Whatever - you have said it all and I agree with you 100% and never intended to deliver a message that suggested otherwise.
