  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Q&A

Went searching through this thread, I'm sorry if I missed the post:

I've heard the Canon EF and Nikon mounts will be shipped with EPIC. Is this true, and if it isn't, has RED have a detailed price point for each mount?

Thank you in advance.

The last I heard they would cost approximately $500 per mount. Although this may have changed since I last checked!

Hope that helps,

Ivan

Theoretical question: What is the maximum number of frames per second that the EPIC could do (with lower resolution). Could you do something like a windowed 640x480 read-out and thus have more fps? Graeme? :)

Hi Brook,
I was interested in knowing from youre experience a couple of things:
1. how does the sync work at 48 fps?, if you are using and external sync generator or internal?, and the same for he timecode.
2. How is the depth of focus of the EPIC working with 3D, An example of something that i don´t like (just my personal opinion, not saying is wrong) is the shallow deepth of field of THor 3D ( i kind of get the feeling that was shot thinking more in the 2D copy than in 3D copy, just a guess maybe is just how they like 3D).
3. What monitors are you using to monitirize 48 fps 3D?
4. What systm are you using for downloading from the SSD?
Thanks in advance for youre answers and hope dn´t make you loose too much time.

We're shooting 24FPS on Spider-Man, so any 48 we shoot is overcranking. That said, we are syncing externally with good 'ol Ambient Lockit boxes.

Depth of focus and depth of field behave as you'd expect on the Epic... it's all just mathematics. The creative decisions regarding how much depth of field to employ on this film are above my pay grade. :)

Since we are not monitoring 48-for-48, my answer may not apply to your question. That said, I'm not actually able to answer that question specifically just yet. We have 5 3D monitors on set of various sizes and models.

Data is handled by my lovable and fearless DIT Data Technicians Steve Freebairn and Zach Hilton of Freehill Productions. There's a lot to say about our workflow and I'm not sure how much I'm able to reveal at this time, but suffice it to say that we are using a handful of Apple Mac Pro towers will all sorts of go-fast bits inside to crunch through the data. It's a pretty awesome workflow and it definitely deserves a better post than this. I'll write an article on our workflow when it's more appropriate.

Hi Brook,
2. I believe Thor was converted into 3D, not shot natively. So you probably can't look too deeply at the decisions made by the DP in relation to how they show up in 3D

Can you turn the EVF to show B/W while keeping all other monitor out's in
color? Just wondering if it's doable with Epic.

Hi there,
I am just curious to know a couple o f things that maybe the EPIC owners/users can resolve or anyone from the RED team about the second point can jump and tell if it is somewhere in theire list of development:
1. how are you feeding the accesories with the EPIC: Focus pulling, hd converter, sync generator.
2. in the HD-SDI output
a) is showing the image recorded? (if not can it be changed??) i know usually you might want to see what is around but for straight on set dailys i find this will improve quality an eficiency (my 2 mistika Live will enjoy that option for sure)
b) can you switch on/off the marker?, is the output frame rate the same as the TC frame rate base? can it be adjusted? (I mean only for up to 30 fps at this point, even do for the 48 fps 3D projects that could be great to have, I imagine eventualy a solution will be achived).
c) what happens with the output whenever you go hdrx.
3. Are you finding big diferenses in the sensor position for the 3D projects with the EPIC-M, just curious if hand made will make this less acurate.
4. EPIC-Ms in Europe at this point?, curious since we need them for 3D and 2D projects. And for June-July?
Thanks for youre time and happy to see the great footage that is coming out from this cameras

Not yet enabled, but coming later most likely. Check the manual for the different output modes that will be supported. Right now our Epic-M is outputting at 1.5Ghz 24fps 1920x1080p

Same thing that happens to the image on the Red touchscreen ... nothing. HDRx just records an additional stream which you can use in post and as such doesn't really lend itself to on-set monitoring. Now eHDR on the other hand might do something like this, which would be great. However, word from the Red team is still no output preview on any of the live taps.

Ciao Ketch,

Sei proprio sicuro che il nuovo red pro zoom 17-50 non vignetti a 5K?
fammi sapere, perchè se non dovesse vignettare dovrò inviare il mio perchè vignetta.
ciao e a presto

I heard that only some 17-50mm pros are vignetting. You can easily spot them because they have a loose iris gear... :-)

what do you guys use for HD-SDI output if you want to use more than 2 monitors? using bomb evf and hd-sdi output for marshall on epic and need other output for directors monitor.so we are using t-connector for epic hd-sdi output.our problem is that output is on very tight place hard to plug in and plug out

Hi all,

Just flipping through settings on the EPIC M today. Is there any chance in future firmware releases that we could see framing modes that mirror the MX based cameras? For matching purposes, it would be a nice feature for a 2 camera setup.

thanks,

Dustin Bowlin

Haven't had time to do an exhaustive search, but is there a grid of Epic's current maximum varispeed framerates versus redcode setting and resolution/aspect ratio with the different SSDs anywhere? Doesn't seem to be one in the ops manual like the Red One had.

And to echo Dustin above, would especially like to match Red One's 4K, 3K and 2K 16:9 FOV framing modes - what framerates can we get with those at Redcode 36 equivalent compression?

Also, being in PAL land, very interested in framerates at multiples of 25 for those flicker, rolling bar issues with 50Hz location practical lighting.

Thanks!

Thanks John, but I don't have an Epic to play with, and the manual doesn't seem to cover my question directly.

What I would like is to choose a FOV, resolution, aspect ratio, redcode to match a Red MX at 4K, 3K and 2K 16:9, and then know what's the maximum framerate (multiple of 25) at that setting.

The Red One operation manual has a handy table covering varispeed options at various resolutions, redcodes etc.
