  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Playback

Forgive my naive-ness, but if the Epic-X is on the brink of release, and the Epic-X differs from the Epic-M in that the Epic-M is machined and comes with the understanding that the users who buy it have to deal with features not yet enabled.... doesn't that mean that the Epic-X is factory produced and has all the features enabled?

Isn't that what sets the two apart?

Meaning that playback is almost synonymous with the "Epic-X release"?

DANKE!

Not really how it works - if you buy an EPIC (any flavor) now, expect to be receiving firmware upgrades with crazy, sexy, cool new features enabled periodically throughout the next year - probably more like the next two years, as RED continues refining the system.

That is about how long it has taken to fully complete the RED ONE...EPIC may be a little faster, since RED is bigger and more experienced.

But expect new and mind-blowing things to emerge - in hindsight playback will be the least of what comes out of this magic box...

When I shoot with 35mm Film in an Arri movie camera, I just push the playback button
and the camera projects the image onto whatever wall I point it at.

heh heh heh

:)

What makes it difficult? Is this one of the biggest hurdles in designing a camera system?

It has to decode and debayer a 5k redcode image--while the camera is doing other things.

I will quite literally chuck my EPIC at the wall if it starts crashing while attempting to playback.

We should start a thread one of these days with instructions on how to guarantee enlistment to our shit list.

Comments like this one will be near the top.

Nanoflash, kipro mini, hyperdeck shuttle, etc. are all good playback solutions, if you really need one near camera.

In my experience, I can only think of a handful of times where the cameras haven't been too busy to do any playback. That said, Red's style has always been to roll these features out as they work out the bugs and they've been pretty up front about this.

I'm more interested in the Ki Pro Mini for dailies and for editing with. HAs anyone tried it in a real workflow? Can I edit with the ProRes files it records and then reconform a sequence back to R3D's for color correction? I've previously used a FCP7/Color workflow, but am switching to Avid MC/Resolve. Sorry to get OT, but I'm really curious about this as an alternative to transcoding from R3D's.

I haven't tested it out with an Epic yet, but the latest firmware on the KiPro mini is supposed to take in the file name & timecode from the SDI feed. Seems like that's about all you'd need.

Jarred... I was exaggerating.. Jez !!!!...
settle pettle.

I say 99.999 % amazing comments about your cameras (and defend and sell the shit out of your cameras where ever I go around the world) and you say nothing... I say .001% negative thing and you carry on like a house wife.

Cut me slack dude... and read the good bits of that post. Cripes!

If you consider the incredible amount of hard work, endless hours, and sacrifices the team at Red has put into the Epic, you might realize how insulting that comment was. One single sentence literally nullified all the good things you've said. To understand how that comment reads to us... replace Epic with your son's name.

Settle Deanan...

You also are taking this way way out of context... onset frustration is common with all forms of equipment, from a simple light stand that wont hold or a film jam in Arri 435... I was talking about when things go bad on set at the worst possible moment.

Don't be thinking for one second that I don't respect what you guys have built and still building, you couldn't have a better advocate of RED shooting around the world. I've just converted a heap load of Indian 35mm film purists!... I give alot to RED in the background, you can allow me a bit of slack.

Plus I'd never throw a small human being at a wall... especially my son. Thats a very bad comparison.

Once again "I was exaggerating" My REDONE's hung up all the time in Playback.. did I throw them at the wall... NO!

Just settle guys, I'm sorry if my small comment about frustration upset you so much.

PS... You don't even have playback running yet... so why are we talking about this? It's probably going to me amazing, and I'm talking out of my arse!
