  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic & old glass

Hey Millichamp, how'd you get slow-mo so slow with a Scarlet (or was Untitled shot on a rented Epic)? Also what nikkor-to-EOS/PL(?) adapters did you use?

@Nick, I too check this thread out every couple of days to look for updates. I got some 70s/80s nikkors, but for some reason they don't seem vintage enough. I should take a few shots and throw them up.

That was beautiful, Michael. I've recently shot a couple projects partially using various generations of manual Nikkor glass, and I can see their unique fingerprint in your piece.

Here is a trailer for a short film I shot a while back for a young Turkish director in Istanbul, Baris Corak. We shot on a Red One MX, but we used so much old glass I thought it was still relevant. Kinoptiks, Cooke Panchros Ser II/III, Schneiders, and Zeiss Super Speeds were used on this project. I love all of them :)

I shot is with a combination of an Epic/Scarlet.

I can't tell you the exact adapter, but it was a Nikon-Canon adapter.

The set of lenses were my film professors, so we just snagged them up and started shooting. The shoot was so rushed I could barely think straight. We basically came up with the idea, casted it, (literally day by day as we were filming), shot it and edited it, all within two weeks.

It was gnarly.

That was gorgeous!

So what are views of Canon FD glass and similarity or not to Canon K35's ?

Been a bit occupied with other stuff lately.

So glad to see all the good stuff happening here.

Ultimately i think this thread is about photography and ways to achieve the images one envision.
Sometimes old glass is the "right" way to get there. As masters and cookes are at other times.

It's all about what image you envision and how to get there!

Funny you should ask. I just bought a whole bunch of Canon FD lenses and I must say they look quite stunning on the Scarlet :) I will say this: I was very pleasantly surprised at the first images I saw from these FD lenses. I'll post some grabs soon, but so far I'm really impressed with the 50mm 1.4, 24mm 1.4, 14mm 2.8, 135 2.0, and 20-35 3.5. I"m also shocked at how well the cheaper and slower lenses performed. The 24mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8 both look great and cost pretty much nothing. Once Red approves some of these 3rd party FD mounts, I think these FD lenses are going to become quite valuable... especially the fast ones!

I also own a set of K35s, but they have BNCR mounts and I don't have that mount yet for my Scarlet. However, I use them on an AF-100 quite a bit and have become very familiar with their look. My gut tells me there is something FD lenses share with K35s. Not sure what it is, but they feel very similar.

Canon FD 50mm 1.4 - untouched :)

Matt, did you shoot that Spaceship stuff at Laurel Canyon Stages in their spaceship?

Clint, if you want to rock your K35's on your scarlet, get the ALL STAR MOUNT. They make a BNCR adapter. It's all RED APPROVED too.

Also, it wouldn't surprise me if the FD coatings match the K35's (giving all these lenses a similar "look"), as Canon was making both at the same time right? This reminds me of similar conversations I've had about how Contax Zeiss and Hasselblad still lenses from the 70's and 80's all seem to have similar coatings to Super Speeds and Standards (which Zeiss was making at the same time also).
