  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-Ms now...

Mark and Tom are right. EPIC is more than any of us ever dreamed of even without the great accessories that make it even better. I'd rather have an EPIC-M (or EPIC-X) Body without the side handle, REDMOTE or REDVolts than any other camera in the world fully configured.

We have used our cam in all configs. You don't need the side handles/redmote. They are icing on an already delicious cake.

A while back I made a statement on these boards that unless you are already a RED customer then an Alexa is more 'ownable' than an EPIC....

I am very pleased to have been proven wrong :coolgleamA:

Not being able to afford an M (or an X for that matter) I just hope that a rental house on this little island will buy an M or two and sell their stage 2/3 on.....

+1 to Tom, Mark and Michael regarding the Redmote, redvolts, and handgrip.

I have all three and think the handgrip is the most used of all.

Even though I have the four redvolts, my V-lock bricks are still play almost everytime I shoot.

I barely use the redmote, except for crane, but I have shot on cranes with no redmote and it's not a big deal...

It's great having the eyepiece, especially for exterior day handheld stuff, but I have also used the touchscreen on an exterior day in handheld mode and survived it:)

The missing stuff is no big deal, when you get these items they will make your life easier and your camera will be awesomer, but it is still usable and a great camera without!

Epic-M on order at RED Europe, wire transfer planned for tomorrow, I've never been closer to owning a RED :w00t:

PS: Thank you Brent, Michael & Alan :001_smile:

So if the only thing shipping on the Epic X package is the touchscreen, and no grip or redmote and I'm happily shooting with the touch screen and it suddenly fails.... I'm shit out of luck. I believe in at least one backup on any critical system. And that certainly pertains to the camera.

I know Red's doing everything to build components and fill the supply chain. Just wish there was some visibility into what will be available when. Still no answer on the Pro I/O availability....

Bottom line, nothing we can do but wait and see. I'll be hoping for the best!

If you don't mind me asking, what's the difference between getting from the USA or from RED Europe? There's normally a very scary difference between USA & UK/EUR pricing, although that tends to be the 'big boys' who turn a large % of profit from this side of the pond.

I'm UK based myself and have been contemplating options - mainly as workarounds to VAT & excessive Duty - VAT we can get back, but duty is annoying (it is a business expense, but I'd rather not loose it in the first place!).

Unlucky for me that my funds aren't available until end of Aug... but that's not far away now and I feel Epic is starting to move along nicely now (Epic-M is a pretty logical option for current non-Red users, IMO).

I didn't say you wouldn't want them. Poor choice of words on my part I guess.

I'm saying they aren't necessary to have "On the camera" at all times.

The REDMote is of course handy. I pulled focus on a Phantom while remotely controlling my Epic-M from across the room. Badass for sure, but thats not an everyday need.

Buy two touchscreens?

I ordered to Red US and was transfered to RED UK. In term of price, no bad surprise, RED UK's price in GBP is almost the same as RED US's price in USD + import tax duty. However, as a french company, I can order without VAT (instead of paying cash 12k$ to customs and redeeming it later) and have a less expensive & duty-hassle-free fast shipping from London to Paris. :smile5:

I would love to hear more details of this.

If you actually boil out the accessories, an EPIC-M is a few thousand more than an -X and has double the warranty. I know most have paid for their -Ms already.

I am not able to add up all the parts in M package and X package stage 2.I know i will get my 2 XS in September but I want Ms now.Can any body compare these 2 packages side by side so My idiot brain can make a decision. Thanks In advance.

Your mileage may vary as Red adjust according to current forex rates, however my M bill was under £39k - really not significantly different to importing for yourself, but with many administrative advantages. I just wrote a regular cheque and knew exactly where I stood.

I'm sure Alan Piper will be along to comment on this topic, as billing for the M through Red Europe is quite new. I was first to buy this way, and Alan made it all very straightforward which was massively appreciated.

Red Europe deals with most if not all taxes and rates when you buy the Epic (at least they did for me). My bill was also under £39k ex VAT. Although i find out exactly what the final price was tomorrow when i pick up my Epic-M which i am very much looking forward to :-)

Alan, Ivan, Sam and the guys were awesome throughout the whole process - my thanks to those guys and of course Jim & Co.

Thank you very much for that informtion, John and Andrew. Hmm... if I could sell my RED One for €17000 (or slightly more with RED Drive and some other accessories) I'd only need to take a loan for €28000. It's extremely tempting, I have to admit.

Touchscreen - $1,600
4 RedVolts - $780
Travel Charger - $125
RedMote - $550
Side Handle - $950
4 128GB SSD Cards - $7,200
Pelican Custom Case - $595
2 Year Warranty - FREE

TOTAL M-Package - $58,000

Epic-X Stage II

Epic-X Brain - $28,000 ($19,500 to Stage-2 Customers)
Side SSD Module - $1500 (FREE)
Titanium PL Mount - $2000 (FREE)
Touchscreen - $1600 (FREE)
Redmote - $550 (FREE)
Module Adapter - $300 (FREE)
Pro Battery Module - $1,250 (FREE)
2 RedVolts - $390 (FREE)
Travel Charger - $125 (FREE)

Actual Cost - $35,715
Total Cost to Stage-2 Buyers - $19,500
Total Cost to Stage-2 Buyers who did the MX Upgrade - $18,250

Now if you want to get the few extra items with your X package that is included in the M package, you would have to buy the following,

BombEVF - $3200
4 128GB SSD Cards - $7200
Side Handle - $950
2 More RedVolts - $390
Pelican Custom Case - $595

$12,335 Additional Cost to match M which does not include an additional warranty. But if you stick with X, then you get the Pro Battery Module and the Module Adapter for free, along with everything else.

So buy an M today and pay $58,000 or wait for your X and pay $30,585 for the same package minus the additional warranty but plus the 2 modules. (this is with the RedOne MX $1250 discount applied)

FYI, the Epic-X Stage II cost is $48,050 if you BOIL out the free accessories. To match the M package, we can remove the Battery Pro Module ($1250) and the Module Adapter ($300) so actually it's $46,500 total worth of gear. A $11,500 difference between the M package...

If you're a single shooter, it might make more financial sense to just wait for your X camera but if you want an Epic TODAY and anticipate having 2 cameras in the future, then it makes sense to get an M today. The 2 year warranty and being able to have it RIGHT NOW may be worth that additional $28,000 difference

I wonder what will happen when all these X cameras are out there in the wild. Right now rates for an M package are around 1500-1800 per day. I imagine with all those X cameras, rental rates are going to drop quickly but then again, the cost of the X package will remain high. Stage-2 buyers are getting the best deal so we should keep that in mind when we charge our clients. The camera system is not a $20k camera.. It's a $40k+ camera and rental rates should be adjusted as such.
