  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-Ms now...

Stage 4 includes 1st time RED purchasers... and you can place your order before the end of the year.

Jim

This is indeed excellent news. Very much looking forward to decisions that will need to be made in the near future because one way or another...I'm getting a gorgeous new RED product :-)

Ordered an Epic M today. Wish I had done it months ago, but I probably would not have made the cut. On the subject of back orders, the EVF and Red Volts are late and possibly the handle/grip and red mote as well, or so I was informed today when purchasing.

Umm, so what good is an Epic M without a Redmote?

It seems the whole delivery schedule of basic camera components like EVFs, batteries and the grip (which is so much a part of the whole DSMC system concept) is so... well... out of whack. Especially given the earthquake/tsunami delays. It would seem production runs of those components could have been in place while waiting for camera components. Or were those components impacted by the tsunami as well?

How is it that Epic M's are readily available when Epic X can't ship because of missing components? I know M owners are paying a premium and that offsets come of the component costs but...

I mean, I'm excited about the idea of Epic X shipments happening in September, and thrilled with the mount and SSD upgrades, but will we have red motes and batteries for the pro battery module when the camera ships? Will the Pro I/O module be available when the camera ships? (I've asked as have others, but no reply). Will the handgrip be shipping and in stock by September?

I'd really like to buy the accessories that will make a complete camera package when my Stage 2 camera ships, but I really have no visibility into the availability.

Can someone clarify please?

Thanks!

I just hope this also means that SCARLET-F will be released this year. I really don't care if the price goes up after new year - I just want the damn camera now! Haha! :D

This is like saying, "What good is a Ferrari without a sunroof."

I spent months shooting on the Epic M without the Redmote. And I racked up mountains of sick footage.

So how did you control the camera? With a hand grip?

OK Fair enough. But my post was a question about availability of key components that were advertised as shipping as a kit. Stage 2 Epics are supposed to ship with a Redmote and batts, so when I see a post that suggests that they are back ordered when we are just at the "M stage" I get nervous. With potentially hundreds/thousands of cameras shipping soon, that doesn't bode well for availability.

I just want a complete kit. Seems like a fair request when we've been waiting so long.

You don't need the side grip for the camera to work... Everything works off the 5inch touch screen no worries at all. But having the side grip is awesome. I never take mine off. It gives you the DSLR feeling all the time, Its great to use just to stabilise the camera, off and on right at your finger tip... Its the best.

You don't need the REDMOTE. The camera works fine without it. We hardly use ours other than looking at the pretty numbers on the back... and maybe some crane shoots for remote switch on&offs. I'm still figuring out its true benefits at this time, I'm sure there are cool things hiding in it, I haven't utilised yet.

Bomb evf... Once again, Camera works fine without it... But if your like me, trying to pull focus on the 5inch screen in bright light or bright backgrounds reflecting in the monitor face.. Becomes annoying. Soooo... the EVF wins my vote.

REDVOLTS (you need the side grip) Red volts will be awesome for all of us.. But once again, you don't need them for the camera to work.
I literally click a V Lock battery onto my belt and walk around happily shooting for a couple of hours. It's as simple as that.

So at the end of the day the EPIC works in minimal configurations, But! the side grip I think is a must have. Especially when you get your RED VOLTS and I tend to toggle through settings quicker using the toggle on the grip than using the touch screen.
BOMB EVF... A must if you shoot like me hand held a lot in bright areas.
REDMOTE... dont loose sleep about not having a REDMOTE. :)

Remember we had these same problems with REDONE.. Waited what seemed for ever for things to turn up.. EVF's being the longest for me. I think RED are in the same supply and demand boat again.. (with Japan not helping there cause)
A great pity for them and us. But Im sure it will all turn around soon.

Now that the EPIC M seems to be slowing down in interest. I think everyone is prepping themselves for the EPIC X... They can smell its eventual arrival. And so can I... I was going to buy another M... but I'm in the same boat. Do i need to now with X just around the corner.

Mark and Tom are right. EPIC is more than any of us ever dreamed of even without the great accessories that make it even better. I'd rather have an EPIC-M (or EPIC-X) Body without the side handle, REDMOTE or REDVolts than any other camera in the world fully configured.

I have never used a Redvolt battery. Ever. And I've been shooting for almost half a year on the Epic.

Red Team. Start giving yourselves pats on the back.

You're changing the film world one giant step at a time.

And I think we all want to say thank you for it!

The fact that we have on-demand EPIC-Ms isn't due to demand falling off, it is due to production going up. This bodes well for EPIC-X production when all the parts and pieces start showing up.

As for the difference in production costs between the two? It seems to me that people who have no production knowledge or experience tend to make everything fit in a neat box. "So you are just paying a premium for a few electronic pieces... right?"

Truth is that you have no idea the complication of what we have done to get these -M cameras out the door... the ant-like workarounds and long hours to even get EPIC-Ms as a market option. We'll make more profit on EPIC-Xs than we could dream of on EPIC-Ms.

If you actually boil out the accessories, an EPIC-M is a few thousand more than an -X and has double the warranty. I know most have paid for their -Ms already.

Really hope this is soon....can't wait to start shooting with EPIC-X....
in the mean time RED One MX is just doing fine...

Just want to say the Epic-M is awesome. I have not used it until now. I'm in line for a X camera and unfortunately I have not enough funds for a M-camera but LBM in Stockholm was kind to lend me and some friends a camera for a day. We had a blast shooting that day. I'm just now playing with the footage in redcine and it's totally crazy.

If you have a chance to get a M, take it!

I have to admit I spent an hour earlier today considering a sizable bank loan. Sanity prevailed eventually... for a while, at least.
