But Epic dsmc should be great for studio shoots that would have used live view anyway.

Well sports camera operators follow fast action and pull focus manually on very long lenses with electronic viewfinders at every televised football game. It is easier to do when your view is not interrupted by shot and you can anticipate the movement.
I have to agree. You'd be receiving pretty incredible value if it is released with this feature at the proposed price point.Scarlet doing HDR at 24fps would be awesome :emote_happyhappy: Anything else has got to be cream.
You are missing the point. In a video camera or dslr in video "live view" mode the autofocus is inherently less accurate particularly on moving subjects where the mirror allows the use of phase detection and better prediction of moving subjects and adjustment/correction during the mirror down/closed shutter period...
I need to clarify one thing...
EasyHDR happens in camera and there is NO hit to the data rate. Files come out of the camera the same size as normal mode. You are, however, constrained to 5K at 48fps. The HDR is "baked in" to the file so there is no post option for combining frames.
HDRx is recorded as two streams, so data rate is twice normal mode. Combining them happens in post and there are a wide variety of options for doing this. Again, you are limited to shooting maximum 5K at 48fps.

It would be nice. Though, if Scarlet did not do it, that would be a significant feature that would help differentiate Scarlet from Epic. So far, Epic is like 3x more expensive for overcranking being the only obvious big difference.
"constrained to" makes it sound like that is the ONLY frame rate for these modes.
I have a feeling no HDR on Scarlet. Jim has said a few times that the EPIC processing power is way more than Scarlet, hence the frame rates, REDCODE options, etc. I doubt the Scarlet will be able to handle it. But hey, that's your difference between a $3000 and a $30000 Brain.
Yeah, but 5K 100 FPS is huge. It's the feature I look forward to the most.

So when you say "baked in" is this still RAW? Or is it in some way different from the RAW we would expect to come out of a RED camera in "regular" mode?
Yes... it is still records as REDCODE RAW. Only the HDR combining is "baked in". That probably is a bad choice of words...

Dont forget different redcodes between scarlet and epic. There should be visible image difference. I believe, however, that scarlet will have the single stream hdr, probably limited to 24/25 fps. That's ok for me. The epic will keep the much more creatively versatile X mode. Now how about adding hdr to the 100fps 3k mode of the scarlet, Red team?![]()
