  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC HDR...

Jim clarified that later though saying they are not sure if scarlet will be able to support it yet but they are going to try their best.

"I guess the original post was a Scarlet post. At that time #21 was just a mistake. Since I forgot what I posted and what it was in reference to, I just thought this new magic HDR should go there since it is so cool. We are trying to see if we can implement it in Scarlet... but no promises today.

edit: though we could be talking about two different things here HDR and HDRx but I would think (though I could be wrong) HDR would be harder to implement than HDRx in camera so it might not matter either way.

Hopefully RED will be able to bring the full power of HDR to Scarlet S35, and find other ways to make EPIC stand out like it should.

While there will always be "more"... EPIC is a game changer.

You will likely not ever need more. You will get it because we will make it. But EPIC is the ONE that changed everything. I have seen a lot. I own over 1000 cameras. EPIC is the one that will change history. It is the one that covers everything. Size, price, performance.

I strongly suspect that the still images I took on Saturday with a long-discontinued dSLR and ordinary lens could not be reliably reproduced by an EPIC camera.

The worst part about this announcement is going to be the producers and clients: "You don't need lights. Just push that HDR button thing and everything will look great."

That be funny! Where's that HDR:Night Vision feature again!

I need to clarify one thing...

EasyHDR happens in camera and there is NO hit to the data rate. Files come out of the camera the same size as normal mode. You are, however, constrained to 5K at 48fps. The HDR is "baked in" to the file so there is no post option for combining frames.

HDRx is recorded as two streams, so data rate is twice normal mode. Combining them happens in post and there are a wide variety of options for doing this. Again, you are limited to shooting maximum 5K at 48fps.

Jim

Jim, awhile ago you mentioned that the red one drives would be compatible with epic. Is this still the case? can i shoot EasyHDR @4k on a red 640 drive?

Can the HDRx mode be used outside of the 5k format? And if so, will the frame rate limits apply?

Jim:

Any chance you could clarify what Ted said at IBC re: timing per this post:

If I recall correctly I heard Ted saying to someone that stage 2 will start in a few weeks and that Epic will be available late this year or early next year, but as we all know this is subject to change...

And while you are at it:

Other than the additional disk space and 48fps at 5k limitation - is there any downside to HDRx™™™ mode?

I got into RED 4K mainly because for shooting nature/documentary footage (often intended for stock) I wanted the highest resolution and quality possible to future proof as much as possible. (It's frustrating to look at the hundreds of tapes on my shelves of unique creatures and from exotic locations around the world and know that it is at best 720x480).

So just wondering: is there any reason I wouldn't shoot that same kind of stuff in HDRx™™™ mode?

Thanks, and congrats on achieving this HDRx™™™ - seems truly extraordinary.

PS very cool that if you type H D R x then HDRx™™ automatically gets printed with the ™

PS but every time I edit, it adds a ™ :-)

Hey Michael, jim said "you are limited to shooting maximum 5K at 48fps" so i assume that means you can shoot HDR at less resolutions as well. I could be wrong.

stage 2 in a few weeks? i dont see that as possible, someone surely heard Ted wrong. I think Tattoo is going to start in a few weeks with Soderbergh's shoot.

But I'm trying to tease out some kind of response from Jim. :-):001_smile:

Jim,

When posting the next stills or footage of Epic HDR footage, could you give post both the EasyHDR™ and the HDRx version of roughly the same shot, just so that we can see the practical differences in shooting modes?

So Jim after having played with your new baby for a while.
Other than to get to a higher frame rate than 48, is there any reason why you would not shoot in at least Easy HDR at all times?

You can still use RED Drives up to a certain REDCODE... not exactly sure what that is right now.

Jim

Is there possibility that at least the EasyHDR will trickle down to the Scarlet line-up?

It would be nice. Though, if Scarlet did not do it, that would be a significant feature that would help differentiate Scarlet from Epic. So far, Epic is like 3x more expensive for overcranking being the only obvious big difference.
