  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic flare issue solution

Where is doug in this thread?

I hope he can ship directly. Maybe he'll just make them for RED to be sold through the RED Store.

I think were all just waiting for the flocking approval from Jarred. :)

All flocking humor aside, I don't find it particularly flocking funny that RED continues to stay silent on this problem.

It is in RED's best interest to fix this. Sorry, but it is a design flaw. If it is not addressed, it will continue to harm the EPIC's reputation, add fuel to the "Alexa is better" mentality, hurt rentals and cause RED PR problems.

'Cmon. Just fix it guys.

Okay, so I think I have it licked.

See photos - lens is a 50mm B Superspeed. Also tested with 18, 85, 50.

That's a 150 watt Pepper aimed right at the camera, about 8 feet away.

There's a bit of standard lens flare left over, but since the light is out of frame, a matte box or flag can take care of it.

It's a very simple fix that the user can install. Of course, I will send a sample and instructions to Jarred first for approval.

Also, you can remove it quickly if you happen to want those flares back!!

I will want one...will you build/sell and ship? Or is it something we can all build and you tell us how to do it?

Mark,

I'm sure RED is not flocking around, they are busy making lots of cameras at the moment. I'm sure that when the dust settles they will offer a solution. But, for now, I don't see it as a big deal when Doug has flocking wonderful fix already:)

Flock off!!!!

That's what I will say on set if I want those flares :)

Mark,

I hear you on this but I think you are asking for a difficult answer.

RED is addressing the issue sone customers are complaining about by having Doug creae a solution. Sone other customers have situations where they like the flare (flares are in right now it seems).

If you are asking RED to admit what you think is a giant problem, halt production of cameras, recall all the cameras to fix a shiny piece in the gate, I think that is a tall order right now.

Perhaps RED are aware and are using an interim solution until a certain serial, etc. no one knows but RED but I think they are moving prudently.

The simple answer to clients is: "it's no longer a problem, RED has an approved solution". If that solution isn't up to someone's standards that's really not their problem.

Could this have been "caught" earlier, sure. But we have no idea how complex this us to address, those material are probably carefully selected. The Alexa has the exact same problem but it shows up as a completely lisle con, milky picture.

Film is a bit different because it does not reflect the way a CMOS sensor does.

I'm nit here defending RED, just considering all points of view.

As a customer, I am satisfied because there us an approved solution. It's out in the open, people know it's there and they know how to adjust for it.

I would be interested to know if the new EPIC X has the same shiny bit of metal like the M?

Anyone with an X and shed some light on this?

So simple :)

Got the thumbs up from Jarred this morning.

Here's the video:

If you can find the foam, you can do it yourself. I will likely sell the foam guards for heap cheap.

Thanks
Doug

Does look simple, but I really don't want myself our other people poking their fingers around the sensor. I do everything in my power to keep it clean at all times. I would rather have a solid matte insert (perhaps a form fitted plastic "box" with a matte surface) or even better have the current gate/metal shielding area replaced with a matte anodized version.

Matte anodize can be achieved by matte etching the aluminum prior to anodize. Typically done with either warm caustic soda bath or warm fluoride acid bath.

The only way they'd be "poking their fingers around the sensor" is if you removed the optical low pass filter, which you do not do with this method.

Doug's solution is the same as what I've been using for a month or two now, with the same foam.
While it basically does the job, the foam is still slightly reflective( can still leave a glow, often attractive, where the flare once was).
Adam's application method of folding telescope flocking over the edge of the area will probably be even more effective, I'd think, and you'll have less chance of accidentally touching the OLPF glass.
Just saying.

I understand, I think you get my drift though. Do appreciate what you're doing. I think it's a great solution, just concerned with the rigors of the field.
