  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC FAN NOISE - HEARTBREAKING DURING INTERVIEW

With 40%/40% fan setting at normal room temperature (20°C) my scarlet stays at around 61°C in standby and at 64°C after recording a full 256GB Mag in one go (4kHD/6:1).
The FanPlate would get the setting down to 35%/35%, which is a big step for sound, as 40% is often too loud for indoor interview situations...

But I rather don't want another plate on top of the camera.

I think we really need a fan replacement program, an upgrade for those who want a camera that is less noisy.

I would love to get (or buy) the most up-to-date silent fan in the world from Red!

(Unless that fan is already in there and we just have to live with it, which would be a major bummer)

Hello Sebastian,

The FanPlate would replace your top plate and not been added to it.

I don't think that RED's future programm to implement the 6k Dragon will lower the heat of your Core. There will be more data and more processing involved.

JIM stated it will generate "roughly the same" amount of heat:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?83976-Sensors&p=1050662&viewfull=1#post1050662

They are working on power management that will (could) improve heat generation. It would also be great if we could switch off some Core demanding tasks (high FPS, HDRX, SDI out/downscale/debayer setting...) to lower the heat.

Their Airflow path is too small to really cool it down just by swapping the fan with a quieter one and to enable an Epic to record at 35% cam fanspeed in a 30C room temp during a whole 256 SSD.

The FanPlate is the my choice to cool the Epic down. ;-)

The really big noise maker is actually the RED icon on the front Vent Grill. Remove this and you're in for a quite surprise! However, improvement are most noticeable with the fan running more than 40%.
I'm beta testing a replacement grill we might produce soon (the red plastic part on the pic).

Hi Patrick,
I don't even use a top plate anymore,
because I want to avoid a second grill to improve airflow.

Hi Brian,
your grill looks cool!
How much improvement is possible with this?
Will you offer a grey/black one, too?

a fan replacement upgrade may not be a bad idea. granted being such a small fan it needs a high amount of rotations to create a certain amount of cooling, but there are many different design fans of the same size that offer up a different kind of blade shape that can bring in more air on less rotations. hopefully RED is testing those out as well. you'd be surprised on how a different blade shape lowers the amount of noise and keeps the same amount of cooling.

You are right Tom, but the size of the fan is the problem. You have to have a much higher RPM with a smaller fan. If the air intake would be bigger it could help a lot.

The trouble also is how the airflow is designed. It's made to cool the sensor first. But the problem is the hot air from the sensor that also heats the Core. Extracting the air from the top, the way the FanPlate is designed, helps to cool down the core and at the same time the Sensor. Extracting air does less noise than blowing towards any obtsacle. The FanPlate also acts as a big heat sink.

I'm convinced that any effort to tackle the heat issue is welcome. I'm very interested to test Brian's Vent Grill.

Cool, Brian. Whatever you're able to reduce.
But if you manage to improve in the critical settings (You know, when you raise the fan from 30 to 35 and 40 and the soundman suddenly pushes his hands on headphones and look at you w/o a smile). That would be super cool.

Pat, you said with your plate you achieved continuous operation

"FanPlate set to 1/2 (equal or lower noise than 35% fan speed setting in the camera) and camera set to 35%
Increased shooting time before overheating from 9'40'' (without) to NO MORE OVERHEATING (with)"

This equals +or- Scarlet set to 70%, correct?

Sorry I have no Idea with the Scarlet.

I still have to compare both Scarlet and Epic-X,

- to see if the Scarlet fan settings are matched to the Epic's-X one (speed and noise level)
- to see if there is a heat difference between both (mainly due to core power draw... (?)).

Up to now, my test have been done exclusively with the Epic-X.

Did some one test side by side both cameras and noticed a difference regarding heat generation and fan speed?

I know I'm a bit crazy... we usually don't test those kind of things :-)

Shooting yesterday and like 5 people on set asked why the camera sounds like a vacuumcleaner. I think this fan noise issue, even in standby mode is something what red really should work on. Sitting next to te camera a lot of the time i cant understand people because of the fan noise. On fiction sets in silent locations it's really annoying and sometimes nearly a reason not to choose the epic. So please please, when the dragon upgrade program comes along, i really hope red finds a way to reduce the fan noise alot...

Hi Brian,

Any news about your grill? Can't wait to try it out!!

Red, please let us know if we can expect reduced fan noise when sending the epic in for the dragon update? Is that something you are working on? Would be really really really welcome addition to make the camera much more versatile for different shooting situations.

I would be keen to try out a new grill replacement as well.
I'm shooting wildlife and the fan noise is a killer.

I would give you two advices in the meantime...

- try to block the sound coming from the front of the camera (under the lens) without blocking the air in-take. The fan noise is projected towards the scene.
Grill replacement wouldn't help much.
- Use the FanPlate ;-)

Just discovered this thread, awesome work Patrick! I had such an embarrassing experience shooting interviews with my Scarlet. Dave Mustaine (Megadeath/ Metallica) thought someone turned on a hair dryer! I ended up keeping that part in the edit because it was to damn funny. I will have to upload that clip sometime hahaha

I'll be happy to make a link on our website! I bet it would be the best advertinsing for our FanPlate! ;-)

Looking forward to see it!
