  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC FAN NOISE - HEARTBREAKING DURING INTERVIEW

I am currently shooting a short documentary film in Japan on Epic.

The images are beautiful, and the slow motion is excellent. But the fan noise when not recording is terrible. When there is a room full of monks in prayer, it's super disruptive to have the fan come on every time I cut the camera. It's 30 degrees heat here, and the fan is working overtime to keep up.

Did a couple of interviews yesterday. Three times I had the temperature display go into the yellow. So I made an excuse and cut for the fan to blast in at 110%. It's all set to auto, and yet we can he happily shooting and the temperature jumps.

I really don't want to care what temperature the camera is at. Why should this even be important to me? It's a technical background process that should be hidden, and invisible, and not disruptive to the shoot.[/QUOTE

I agree, camera noise should not intrude on any form or performance interview or any filming situation. Its VERY important to address soonest.

Hello M. Bergeron,
I wonder how you managed to find this as it still was quind of "hidden" ?
We didn't want to go public yet.
Never the less, good find!

Gratz .... Great looking design ... From ducted fan theory, this makes a lot of sense. I am looking at the intro price ... When will the website go fully online? Also if the extra fan is not turned on ... How does that effect the flow of the on board fan?

Hello Patrick,

Thanks for your interest. The site is online since couple of hours due to the "leak".

We are working on a prototype that is currently shooting a feature film.

The FanPlate, if connected to power (D-Tap), will always run at minimum speed. It's not possible to turn it off. We wanted it that way as it could obstruct the air outflow. We even advise to connect the FanPlate to the Battery Mount that powers the camera, so when a battery is on the camera, the FanPlate will turn.

What direction is the airflow on that fan?

This looks like a great idea, Patrick. If I can make a suggestion, you should provide measurements in decibels to describe the noise of the camera with and without your add-on FanPlate. Even measuring it with dBMeterPro in an iPhone would at least give us a ballpark number.

If the FanPlate can stop the Epic from ramping up to 100%, it's a great idea and an important fix -- plus, I assume since it's on the outside, it won't void the warranty.

The fan looks great. We used to use a barney of course for noise film cameras. Are we saying we need a similar 22st century device built for Epic ?

I was looking for a dBMeter, thanks for your suggestion about the Iphone app.

The FanPlate has also lower frequencie sound. At full speed, it's less disturbing than the camera fan set to 60%.
As temp = camera fanspeed, lower camera temp = lower noise...
I made a serie of heat tests, with and without the FanPlate.

Room temp at 29.5C / 85F REDCODE 6:1 25p 2:1 format with an Epic-X

FanPlate set to 1/4 (equal or lower noise than 25% fan speed setting in the camera) and camera set to 25%
Increased shooting time before overheating from 4'47'' (without) to 7'30'' (with)

FanPlate set to 1/2 (equal or lower noise than 35% fan speed setting in the camera) and camera set to 35%
Increased shooting time before overheating from 9'40'' (without) to NO MORE OVERHEATING (with)

The efficience of the FanPlate is also linked to the environment.

Patrick,

Would it be possible to mount the Red Assault top plate or the x top plate on to the top of your fan plate? I love the fan but I need to mount alot of accessories to the top of the camera and the fan plate does not have enough mounting points especially the right rear side.

Also the side mounting holes on the fan plate are they aligned so you could use the side rib mounts from Red or Wooden Camera? Thankyou

We made a lot of mounting points on the FanPlate to attach accessories.

The idea was to get as small as possible and not to add something. To answer your question ;-) the design is not meant for that use.

Pat, that looks really interesting. I love the side handle built in as well. I'm not that keen on the dsmc side handle.

At first I was fine with the noise of the fan. It was loud, but it never got bad enough to a point that it disrupted anything seriously. People have been startled inbetween takes but I usually try and run the fan at about 30-40% during shooting... A day or two ago however, I filmed Bill Nye, the Science Guy, and there was a glitch in the Scarlet. I wasn't the cam op for the scarlet, so I can't say for certain what exactly happened, but in the middle of the take, during his interview, the Scarlet unmounted the ssd and the fan refused to turn off... It was already set to manual mode and it was nowhere near hot enough to have been the emergency fan.

Needless to say he was a bit tiffed.

I love my leaf blower.

hah

That looks like a really great innovation!

I was wondering if it would be possible to change the location of the fan speed adjustment dial to the side instead of the back so that it would be more conveniently accessible when a battery plate is mounted on the back of the camera?
