  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Element Technica have been busy....

Quick question Steve. The Scale Armor Side Plate, CR has a removable door for the Switchblade. Does this also work with the DSMC Side Handle?

Really dig the Scale Armor Side Plate, CL and the spring loaded REDMAG door. Really great for keeping particles out of the bay.

I'm glad you like it Phil! Just wait till you see it in person. We really tried to do something different with this kit.

The DSMC Side Handle does not work with the CR plate unfortunately. We considered it...but needed to make too many design compromises to make it happen.

What's a DSMC Side Handle ? :)

It's that thing you see on about 1/2 of the MX and Dragons out there, especially in the owner operator crowd. It's also the thing I use that speed up my shooting day by about 18%.

Good to know it doesn't fit though. I was already asked :)

Impressive that you can control your gaffer and grips with the flick of a side-handle button, Phil!

It's the thing that stays in the camera AKS case on EVERY single feature film or TV show that shoots on Dragon. I do agree that it is good for owner operator -one man band thing - but - you rarely see it on any set.

Ha! I'm curious...where does 18% come from Phil???

Exposure and critical focus lock on short cut keys, I should say it shave about 18% off my "shot setup" prior to record.

Not to mention the other things it's useful for like the Motion Mount.

All good though. I see this as very useful for cameras that get tossed around a lot and protecting it from harm. Just seeing what it can be used with.

It's the thing that angers ACs seeing instead of a proper dumb side controller. Basically were shaming Phil till he buys a switchblade.

different market - that's all.

Some people - like Phil will live and die by the side handle - but to a rental house - it is a paper weight. Switchblade is what they all wanted from day 1.

I love my side handle. It's got a battery backup so I hot-swap batteries. And it's a great grip to hold the camera. I even like to use it on a tripod since it gives me a more direct grip on the camera when operating.

+1 on that.

I'd actually love an inexpensive blank plate to use in place of the sidehandle when i'm not using the sidehandle, and that has easy on/off mechanism like the switchblade. Maybe someone like VVodden camera will make one...

As an owner/op, I really like the side handle, a lot. Hot-swapping batteries, using it with the motion mount, all the presets... However, it takes some getting used to. When my camera is rented out with even the most skilled camera operator, who has never used one, they just fumble with it a bunch. Sometimes hitting eject during a take and causing a data integrity error (Eject really shouldn't be one of the default presets, IMHO. Neither should Auto White Balance) or switching on Edge Focus by accident and freaking out, thereby ruining a take.

Anyways....Yeah this doesn't play with the side handle but the side handle is meant for owner/ops who don't need so much weight/mounting points/bulk/protection because they shoot/travel light and take care of their gear.

If you rent out your gear a lot or you're kinda clumsy (hah, jk) then this dragon skin looks really awesome.
