I've been reading through some of the Raven threads regarding adapting PL glass to the EF mount on Raven, and was curious if anyone had ever tried or seen the Red 18-50 zoom lens adapted to an EF mount brain? Can't seem to find any info on whether it would or wouldn't work with any of the adaptors on the market.
Thanks!
Kris

It won't work, any lens using an adapter needs the slim pl mounts found on most zooms, unfortunately none of the red zooms have it.
Look at the cieco7 adapter on eBay and he has a whole diagram explaining it.

so i pulled his diagram from his page, the slim pl has a length of 7.2mm and that is the max, i think standard pl mounts like the red zooms and almost all pl mounted primes have a 11-15mm length.

Thanks for the info Jordan. I was afraid the whole flange distance issue would be the case with the Red Primes and Zooms. But got curious after seeing your findings with Raven. Was also hoping to find one that would work with my cp.2's but those fortunately have interchangeable EF mounts anyways. The one thing I still love about Sony is their e-mount. You can slap anything on those cameras with an adaptor. Much easier that way finding an adaptor for the lens and keeping the cameras mount the same the whole time, instead of the other way around and swapping the camera mount. The difference between 3 seconds and 3 minutes, not to mention exposing the sensor out in the field like you have to. DSMC3 wishlist would definitely be Red + E-mount. Which will surely, surely happen.

*e mount and red system are worlds apart. literally. .
E mount started its life in consumer world and has graduated with arguable results. Popularity does not necessarily mean proper engineering; -) there are multiple issues with e mount in production environment. I don't think red wants to pile them on. .
But.... never say never. ...

true, though i just make my lens order accordingly, i have the weapon and raven working side by side with 4 optimo zooms right now and the odd set of kowas i found that had the slim mount. the pl mount on the raven is locked on for the whole show.

Hi Jacek,
yeah I believe I spoke to you on the phone a few months back about this very topic, of finding an adaptor to get PL glass on Raven. You have a company producing these types of adaptors, right?
Still on a mission to find an EF adaptor for PL glass (Red primes in particular) instead of having to change the epic mount. E-mount's are consumer grade, yup. Like EF mounts. But I still love how versatile they are. Will be exciting to see if they develop it into a more professionally reliable system.

Jacek,
Ideally it would be best to be able to adapt the EF lenses to a PL mount brain, rather than the other way around. I have a 50/50 mix of EF and PL glass in my kit, and it would be great to keep the PL mount on the epic and adapt the EF lenses onto that mount. Is there any way this possible, or is it another one of these physically impossible scenarios. I have a gut feeling, no, due to the whole flange issue. But let me know if it's an idea worth persuing (assuming i have the right guy here who I spoke to on the phone with about the topic)
thx, Kris

Kris, i know youll hate to hear this but if i had any investment in PL lenses myself i would be going with a scarlet-w.
or if you really just want to be downscaled to a raven only, i would consider selling your red lenses and invest in a couple nice optimo zooms or maybe the schnieder primes. im telling you right now that those lenses arent going on the raven. the only possibility would be remount them all of them with slim pl mounts and doing some sort of space correction in front of the mount, though i dont even know if that would work.

REd makes inexpensive mounts for their DSMC cameras. That's exactly how the EF lenses should be mounted on Epic. But you know that already... I think Red launched Raven because they felt the time came for the next generation cinematographers that will embrace the electronic lenses since they grew up with them and honed their skills on them. I mean Still AF lenses. Hence the only option available on the Raven is EF. We followed the suit with the OptiTron2 system. EF lenses and OptiTron make a very compelling combination on Raven.
Plug and play, light, precise, inexpensive. Of course that I'm biased and it's only my opinion. But it makes a lot of sense. No need to paddle upsteam here.....

Jordan, I'm on an Epic. No need to explain... It was a special POV application we were curious about for Raven. Think you assumed something else and got the wrong end of the stick.
I'm not investing in Raven. In large part due to the fixed mount. But mainly the compression options coupled with the small sensor will make it a difficult camera to use for high frame rate work.
The reason I still wanted to find an adaptor for a red 18-50mm is because like i mentioned, it would be great to throw an adaptor on the lens instead of changing the mount on the brain. always easier to adapt the lens rather than change camera mounts in my book.
