Hi everyone.

I am new to using R3D files and anything above 1080p. I have Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and while viewing what I've shot (at 4k) it is very laggy. I have to scale down to 1/8 for it to be slightly usable. I cannot scrub through my timeline without having to wait for my PC to catch up. This is weird for me because I have invested a lot into my current PC set up.

Win 8.1
Intel i7 4790k at 4.00GHz
16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 990
160GB SSD for system
2TB HDD for footage
and 240 SSD for editing on

and yet playing back R3D files through Premiere Pro CC is very laggy. Anything that I have stupidly missed or anything I can do please let me know.

Kind Regards,

George

Two things that stand out that will help improve your workflow:

- At least 32GB of RAM, I personally recommend 64GB
- Some sort of RAID volume, preferably with dedicated RAID Controller, to edit off of

I'll look into getting more RAM thank you. Also what RAID do you think I should do, 0 or 1?

With good backup practices and data redundancy with multiple copies elsewhere, RAID 0.

Although, most current NLE’s support native cutting of RED media, knowing when and how to use a traditional offline to online editing workflow is still valuable. Complex jobs stay manageable, make you and your equipment look like a champ.

Surprisingly, if you toured a number of post houses, you'd find the equipment list is strong, but not necessarily the lastest and greatest.

If you are experiencing lagging playback, also check your "paused" resolution setting. Generally by default, it is set to full, but when working with raw 5k or 6K files, this will cause headaches in starting and stopping playback and scrubbing. Set your paused resoltuion to 1/4 and you should have a much faster workflow. It's always nice to switch back to full if you need to check focus on a shot.

You have a much faster system than I do, I have a previous gen Core I7 3930K, 64GB RAM, 1x GTX 980TI, and a dedicated Raid Array for current projects. On 6K FF projects I get 1/4 playback with 1/2 paused resolution with no slowdown for scrubbing or starting and stopping. So you should at least be getting something similar to that. With 5K resolution I can get 1/2 Playback and 1/2 Paused with no slowdown.

It's interesting to note that a lot of major A-list Hollywood features are still offlining at just HD resolution just to make multiple timelines and versions load and save faster. 4K or 5K requires a lot more horsepower, particularly with Raw files.
