  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Early Adopters...

Oh, fuck.
I AM
an early adopter. I just could not pay that much, then..I also tried to drop down the deposit but my bank refused to.
I have been happily a Scarlet early adopter. Lovely camera, unbeaten price. Great B camera with Epic gig I do shoot these days. But non dragonizable..
Oh fuck!
Not your fault, obviously, Jarred. And I completely understand you have to define who and what an early adopter is, but I sponsored so much Red in Italy before you started shipping. And used so much R1 when everybody here was so conservative, that I FEEL an early adopter.

We wanted the RED ONE badly when it was released, but could only afford the Sony EX cameras back then. We got our EPIC-M after pleading in an email how great it would be for us. Almost 2 years after getting on the RED train, I'm happy we got in when we could, but looking at some of our old EX footage, oh how I wish it was in 4K.
we are taking our Epic to Kamchatka in April so no NAB for us, but we will be there in spirit

I was in the same boat, getting a Sony Ex cam instead of my deasired RED even when it was vapour ware the hype and then the first milk maid footage was so exciting. it was only until recently that I could finally get my prized scarlet :) but then I'm a small fish! I'm not in the early adopter's group but I'm still glad I was finally able catch up to the train instead of longingly looking down the RED tracks :iagree:.

This seems a bit like another way to split the RED customers into 2 groups - the original real RED users and those who trailed them later. I guess I'll skip the RED booth since, as a second class user, I paid full price for an Epic M 18 months ago and have never enjoyed the free ride those "early adopters" have received in upgrades and perks. Looks like those amazing visionary customers will, again, enjoy some form of upgrade we M users will not receive. How much is enough for patting these guys on the back and handing out free stuff that is subsidized by those who paid full price? Is this fair? Does this exclusive club that others can never join really encourage brand growth?

Plenty of other things to do at NAB than to see these chosen ones get more praise and goodies it seems.

Early adopter #102 behind sir Vladimir. I threw down a reservation for $1,000 when I only had $1200.00 in my bank account. No joke. I was finishing my last year of school that year.

Speaking of DAY 1: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?4035-First-Pictures
Such a shame my pic links are broken. =(

Playing with Blairs #19 August 31, 2007 - Jarred dropped by that day too!

Wow, that does make me feel old! What a great ride though, still have my #199 placeholder. I remember going to NAB and wanting to put down a deposit but being dissuaded by my then biz partner. I called back the next day and put it on my own credit card, I wasn't going to be left out of the revolution!

Josh,

EPIC-M customers are not forgotten. And every RED customer gets special attention as compared to other companies. Your EPIC-M will get a Dragon upgrade (if you choose) and you don't have to buy a new camera.

I'm def interested in the Dragon upgrade but have an issue in the exclusionary vibe put out by RED. The 2007 boyz have been thanked and rewarded enough IMHO. Let's create a single RED Community that fuses those guys with Epic and Scarlet owners.

what "free ride" are you talking about, Josh?

I paid full price for two RED ONES, then an EPIC-M, then a SCARLET. not to mention all of the support products.

there's been nothing "free" about this ride. not according to my bank account.

it's been a fun ride, a scary ride, an exciting ride, and an historic ride. since 2006.

nothing free about it, though. that is a blatant mis-characterization.

and all of those products have magnificently depreciated since the purchase.

being first means you pay the most for the opportunity - that is all.

in terms of sheer pricing, history has been on the side of those who wait, not the side of those who jump in.

in terms of missed opportunity, history has been on the side of those who jumped in, less so on those who waited.

but neither group has had it both ways, and both groups have enjoyed advantages.

you just have to pick your kool-aid and enjoy the drink, all the way down!

sure, there have been moments when I've envied those who bought a RED ONE for $4k. that is natural. just don't let it consume you. you won't have any fun.

I will not debate this issue in Jim's house. His house - his rules

We paid the deposit and some more but did not think the red one was up to spec when it first came out so we waited for the Epic M... I Guess that will not give us any special gift bag or cool sticker at nab.. lol

As long as we get the dragon before most I'm a happy puppy. If the delay between M and X dragon upgrades is just a few months. Then it will for our part be paid off in no time.

I Think free Wireless / meizlers for everone, would put RED in a category of it's own. Think that would have been such a bad ass way to kick the competition in the gut. Much more impact than slicing prices in half. And if the meizler where made in such high volumes the cost per unit would probably drop considerably. Imagine if all scarlets and epics where wireless all of a sudden then that would change the game completly... To bad the meizler is so costy.

... and the list could go on... what about those that bought into RED before the price drop - ie Stage 4... (etc).

I suppose it's logical to think of RED ownership in the old way, ie the stages. This would then give options to roll out stuff based on purchase dates. I'm sure RED's customer database can easily spit out numbers and info.

I'm excited to see what's going to be unveiled at NAB... hoping for big things :)

I suspect if you knew anything about the real numbers involved, you would discover you are not subsidizing anyone. It sure looks to me like Red is a project of passion, not a big money maker for anybody.

I am not in that 2006 group; I admire them rather than resent them. If your Epic was not worth every penny you paid, you would not have bought it, so what's up with the whining? You can still pay twice as much for an Alexa, get a company who doesn't know or care who you are. Don't forget to check out how much Sony charges for their 4 K ish offering. Real cozy group there. And after a rave like that, you get a very gracious response from the the prez...

My partner in RED Terry was at NAB that year (I still haven't made it to one) and put my money down for NED.

#758 red one changed everything.

I've made so many friends here and around the world, through RED, EPIC changed it all again for me as well.

I probably shouldn't admit his publicly but I was so committed to RED when I moved to Italy, that I had much more money in my RED bank account than my personal bank account, but its actually a true story.

EPIC 111 arrived and I can say it changed things.

And here we are again, on the verge of another leap forward.

thanks Jarred and Jim for pulling all this forward for all of us and the whole industry.

BAH! After having my EPIC price arbitrarily slashed before I had even managed to pay off the EPIC and all the RED accessories I bought, and now being skipped over as a second-class citizen for this incoming goodness, I can say I'm definitely feeling the middle-child syndrome. Oh well.

2 Red One deposits in Oct 2006 for #1073 and #1080, with signed Titanium Rs from Jim @ NAB 2007. I think that makes me an early adopter times 2 : )
Yeah its sweet being an OG REDhead.

Well said. Bought my Red One, paid for the MX upgrade as soon as it became available, opted for stage 2 to keep my trusty Red One, paid in full for an Epic-M so that I could get a second Epic sooner rather than later. I fail to see the free ride and mythical rewards for being an early adopter that Josh refers to. On the other hand, being an early adopter has contributed the success of my business, reward enough in my books. Thanks again to Jim and RED.

I was not an early adopter. There are over two thousand owners who received their Epics prior to me (I'm assuming the vast majority of them were Red One owners) and I have no problem whatsoever with those specific owners having their cameras upgraded to Dragon before me. What I want to know is how swift will this upgrade process be? Are we talking about upgrading 10 cameras a week or a hundred or a thousand? From the time the very first Epic gets the Dragon upgrade how much of a wait period will there be for someone like me?

Thank You Josh,

I too purchased all the cameras one each, after being an "early adopter".

RED ONE, EPIC-M, EPIC-X, and Scarlet.

There was no "free" ride.

RED and the "Early Adopter" had faith in each other then, and it mean something to all of us mutually I think.

I hope it remain that way for the future.

Lets give credits where is due just like in our movies.

No one should be able to buy or jump into a relationship after the fact and demand credits also after the movie is already made.

The "Early Adopter" movie was made and released. Enjoy.

Cheers to all and every one in the credit of "Early Adopter".

Deposit on SN206 at NAB 2006

First underwater housing and use. Ken Corben brought Gibby's SN #8 (just days he picked it up rom RED) to Ft. Lauderdale and 48 hours later I tested in the pool and then Ken took it back to LA for the first open water use in Catalina Islands.

Always been happy I was an early adopter and look forward to NAB to see what goodies Jim and Jarred have for us.
