  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC3 Wish list

It needs to output 1:1 for focus on one monitor and fullscreen on another. I wish I never had to punch to 1:1 but rather had a second monitor wich always showed 1:1. Letting a monitor zoom the 1080 signal is not a good solution.

^ THIS (for the 1000th time)

+2, critical focus at 8k is tough, constantly flipping back and forth only works on static things.

I think that Sony is actually on something when then moved the sensor block from the rest of the camera. Just watch this rig and imagine it been much smaller and more elegant. It would be great to have the option to have the camera on the back.

If go pro and dji´s action camera can utilize the gyro data for image stabilization, so can red!!!

China companies are pushing hard, as it is the country in all senses, they have realise that they can build companies too, not only everything for other companies, cameras as ZCam (RAW, 15+ stops of DR, 8K, up to 60fps tiny cameras, under $5000 are already in October....) among others coming are the prove that some disruptive time is coming, RED better your eyes open, not sure if ARRI will bother, and provably won't lose all their market/clients, but 2019 will be remembered as a disruptive year, mark these words.... time to time....

Heard a lot about ZCam, haven't seen any proof.

Isn't ZCam a subsidiary of Huawei or ZTE or something similar(state sponsored chinees spying machinery), so Trump can block it.

Hahaha first of all I doubt that China needs to spy to anyone, I live in Asia for the last 6 years and I can tell you, in technology stuff they are just ahead, I have personally asked in ZCam forums hundreds of times for professional DR test and nothing has been provided, but it is true that all the users feedbacks and test + footage looks really great. You can find more info in their Facebook page. The realise of their 6K and 8K models is a fact, already presented them in NAB 2019 check the videos in youtube.

Facebook is Trumps equivalent of China's Huawei, with the difference that Facebooks spying is proven, so not going to use it.
This is what i've seen about the ZCam https://www.cinema5d.com/three-new-z-cam-e2-cameras-introduced-bringing-6k-with-super-35-sensor-and-6k-plus-8k-in-full-frame-format/
13 stops and crappy codecs, not a threat for current high-end (ARRI, RED, SONY) as far as I see it.

But a clever 6k S35mm sensor. RED please get us that Monstro S35mm cut.

When is DSMC 3 expected to come? is it worthy to invest in DSMC 2 still?

Long ago when DSMC2 was launched RED stated they would be committed to the DSMC2 form factor until at least 2020. So from that perspective 2020 is the earliest we'd see DSMC3. If true to form and 2020 is the year of a new body type, likely around a Spring reveal and shipping Q3 or Q4. But that is if it's a next year mission.

Interestingly since what was mainly known as DSMC2 Weapon at the time we've seen things like Ranger, which I believe are part of the DSMC2 "family" of cameras and essentially a new body type as well as new sensor technologies and whatever Komodo's body type will be designated.

From one perspective, RED traditionally provides upgrade paths and even credits when moving up to new body types. We haven't heard a peep of the plan yet, but it's likely there will be an upgrade path from DSMC2 to DSMC3 that will result in a discount. For instance there have been $10K upgrades w/ even accessory credits to move you into much more expensive if purchased as new cameras. Which has worked well when looking at cameras that are in the $50-80K territory.

Lot's of speculation about what exactly DSMC3 will look like physically and spec-wise. However, we're seeing some newer technologies in things like Komodo that might be hinting at potential features that could translate into the larger brains. We don't really know about any sort of module compatibility, media compatibility, accessory compatibility, or really anything. DSMC3 has only been mentioned lightly, but not even close to officially announced.

The only thing that is certain, since the invention of DSMC2 many technologies have advanced rapidly that effect what is desired in our future cameras.

I'd love to see a 65mm DSMC3 variant with on-die (CMOS sensor) DRAM in a body that incorporates everything that RED has learned about camera design, packed with the latest technology, and using Type-C CFExpress, which would give RED the latitude to open up the throttle, figuratively speaking.

A dust cap for the media bay. Doesn't have to be mechanically integrated, just something that fits snugly over the media slot when the camera's not in use.

Stick a mag in there. Dual purpose, no dust and always ready to shot.

it would be great for the DSMC3 to be able to work on real shoots when it comes out and not have to wait a year for firmware and accessories to get sorted out.

1. Internal ND
2. Canon's Dual Pixel AF
3. CFExpress cards

Using Canon C200 right now and those Internal ND's and Dual Pixel AF are absolutely AMAZING!

Komodo spec level and price point in the same body/form factor as the rest of DSMC3, sharing media, monitors, modules, protocols etc. I understand Jarred says it's mainly intended as a crash cam (for which "smaller" was the most important part), but as he acknowledges himself 95% of the people who buy it will be peons like me for whom the Komodo price-point is their A cam. No sense not giving them a more painless path to upgrade into the higher end cams.

Why is internal ND such a big deal to people? Can't you just raise the shutter if needed? We will clearly be getting it but wondering why it is #1 on so many people's lists.

No. Absolutely no. Though some will do this, most cinematographers are very deliberate about their shutter speed/angle and keep that consistent or change it up on a scene by scene basis. Using ND and light you can exposue accordingly. Shutterspeed has a rather extreme impact on the general motion cadence of a shot and it's the one thing you don't want to be screwing around with when intercutting. Also something even more important in the world of HDR filmmaking for that matter.

The lust for Internal ND comes from a few directions. Keeping the camera as small as possible is one of them, less to pack too. The ease and speed of use is the main factor as much of the world of videography has crossed over to what many consider cinematography today as have the workflow demands of traditionally faster turnaround times associated with those workflows.

You can take REDuser as a decent sampling and various other communities. The general industry who shoots for cinema and larger budget episodics typically don't "need" or even care about internal ND. In fact on those productions even when the camera has that as a feature it's sometimes rarely used and traditional front of lens filtration is the path most chosen. But that is a small audience of DPs who are shooting in that arena compared to the "entire industry", and that's where much of the want exists for it.

It's 2019 and I can't tell you how many DPs I've met who literally have never used a matte box during their careers. Very literally not the world I come from, but it's a telling sign.

And it's an empowering thing for sure as it saves time, but like with anything there's pros and cons. And most people ignore the cons in this case.

So yes, internal ND would be a nice solution. For many discerning DPs, front of lens will still be the way to go.

Personally I'm happy to just have more options. But it's far from a primary selling point on a camera for me. For others however, it's high on their list.

I don't think "spec level" will be close when it comes to DSMC3 and Komodo, and I don't think body form factor will be either. I think we'll see some of Komodo show up for sure, like 4K monitoring, but DSMC3 will likely still be the premiere lineup moving forward.

Jarred has underlined, bolded, and italic'd that Komodo is more or less a micro utility camera and sort of it's own thing.

I'm expecting DSMC3 to be it's own thing as well. Based on the nuggets of info, we already have a decent idea of several ways DSMC2 and Komodo differentiate from each other.

And though it's likely not known or mentioned, I don't think Komodo will have an upgrade path to the bigger bodies. But who knows, the camera is not out yet. My personal hope with Komodo is it becomes it's own body lineup with eventual upgrade paths.

RED's in a fun position here because Komodo is striking a zone they haven't tackled yet, but their premiere camera lineup will still be their premiere camera lineup.

Certainly Komodo will serve some as an A-Cam option, but for those who it doesn't, it's pretty clear and exciting to see where it will fit into their workflows.
