  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2. Unified.

Jarred and Brent and what about to make a fourth camera DSMC2 DRAGON. 5K Dragon (Scarlet) sensor without dual sensitivity but with normal speeds like 5K@96fps etc. :D Upgrade from Scarlet-W to DSMC2 Dragon let`s say 4000 EUR :D Entry level RED camera. Just normal Scarlet-W with higher speeds. Just some fantasy here... :)

Jarred sent me a personal e-mail about the Monstro situation and to be honest the simple fact that he took the time to write me and telling me that he will make it right speaks so much of why I chose this company in the first place. When you bet in your customers and they come first, you have them for the long term.

Honestly there are few companies I can think off that they have such a direct contact with the users.

Jarred reached out to me on Facebook as well. My response to him was 1. Thank you and 2. Its this sort of attention to customers that makes us so loyal to the brand.

No concrete solution yet, but showing good faith that he will do right by the people who buy RED products. I am sure once the dust settles everyone will be happy again.

Curious what everyone thinks this will do to our market?

Lots of used Helium and Monstro showing up on the market cheap, devalued rentals,
High end cameras in the hands of many more.

Just curious on long term industry effects.

High end cameras in the hands of many more is what Red has done from the beginning and you are living the effects of it now.

A great tool in the hands of a poor talent will not affect the market as much as one fears. Art schools are graduating more talent than ever but it hasn't had as much of an effect on labor rates as the fearmongers said would happen a decade ago.

Put an iPhone in the hands of a great DP or director and you'll have better production quality than giving 100,000 8K cameras to the masses for $5 each.

Still have to sell yourself -- the tool is less important than the skill set and reputation.

That being said, it will have an effect on rental rates or those who combine their skill/labor rate with their gear rate.

seems to more about money most of the time, plenty of talent around.

I'm just curious what the thoughts are around that. Thanks

Can safely say that will remain a fantasy.

I respectfully disagree. In NYU, most of the student DPs have their own camera, such as Alexa Mini and Alexa SXT Plus. In an environment where most student DPs have their own camera, not having your camera acts as a huge disadvantage.

Jeebus. That's really unfortunate. At a school no less, if you don't have money to have the latest and greatest, you're put at a disadvantage?

That kinda pisses me off - I get it that this happens all the time in the real world, but at school? Most college students I know are broke, so the people with money will do better in school than those who don't? Wow.

Remember this happened in 2013 where prices were slashed 45%. Everything levels out in time. Luckily I don't rely on camera rentals. I do however rent other stuff which works out fine.

One quick thing to point out, the production run DSMC2 coin is still a few weeks out, so for the DSMC2 shipments that go out the door before then, those will come with our PROFESSIONAL coin on the front.

Aside from the Monster sensor, rental houses that dropped $50k+ on the Weapon Helium are now going to be competing with owner operators renting out the same camera based on its $25k price. If you're matching market rates then I have to imagine those will get lower for the Weapon Helium.

Rental houses don't buy their lenses or cameras, they can consign them from people like me and you. They will be fine.

Corrected:

This reminds me, Brent. Will Epic-W Helium Upgrades to DSMC2 Helium cameras have the "EPIC-W" molded SSD module replaced with a "RED" molded SSD module?

Copy, I meant the SSD module. Thanks, Robert - I'll correct it in my post.

It's not an entirely new body?

Correction: I don't think it is.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys do with the traded-in cameras? A bunch of Scarlets go to the grave and ripped for parts?

My understanding based on what Jarred and Brent have said in this thread is that in the case of Epic-W bodies to DSMC2 bodies its the internals and the coin that will be replaced. That's why I'm asking about the SSD module.

This happens at NYU because most of the kids who can afford to go to NYU are from a very rich family. The tuition is $78k/year if you don't have scholarship...

who is responsible for the currency conversions?
It might even be cheaper to buy the exchange in usd and have the camera shipped from Europe to the US and back.
12500 USD is approximately 10500 euros today. 12900 € is more then a 20% increase, that seems a bit odd to me

Uhh… Finance Dept. We do not adjust daily like the market. I am pretty sure we do it every two months or once a quarter.

Is there a chance to get an inside information why the difference is that much? the excahnge rate of euros to dollars has been around the same base or even so that the euro was worth more for almost a year now (i think 9 mounths)
I do understand that it is not based on the dailz exchange rate, but it is still quite a bit more expensive in eurpe this way (a flight ticket and custums would probably be cheaper but of course also a bit of a hustle)

PS: I absolutly do love the way RED is going with upgrades, and keeping their mind on the actual products on the market to be understandable

Cool! Placed a Gemini order yesterday and am stoked it might ship so soon. Low-light R3D, can't wait!

I think they will replace the SSD too, would make no sense if it will still read EPIC-W i think.

I'm really looking forward to this new chapter. It's been quite the ride since the scarlet mx. Excited for the the coming 5 years:)
