  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC2 Release Build v7.0.2

i havent updated since the introduction of prores on my raven, everything works.
a screen tear happens "sometimes" after i toggle back from magnification, powering down and up fixes it, so basically i just dont use that function anymore.
all these issues on a new build, i mean maybe they should invite likt 20 people in with their cameras to do a solid test before releasing.

Jordan, I have found toggling magnify rapidly a 3-5 times seems to resolves the screen tear without a reboot.

Yes...

Did the upgrade to 7.2 from 7.1 and found that start up time has dropped to 70 seconds from 75 seconds. A small gain but better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick. When zooming in for a focus check it does this in six seconds as before but then flashes tp black then the zoomed in image comes back but its now 8 seconds before it settles to a useable image so an increase of two seconds over the previous build. Sad face. Zooming back out has dropped from 8 seconds to 7.5 seconds so a small gain. A simple focus check is still too slow but I am not seeing any flashes or tearing. General menu responsiveness seems to be much better but all communication with my CN-E primes has been lost. Its a cruel world.

Tom, are you on Epic-W? Your boot time is twice as long as my boot time, same with magnify toggle.

My Scarlet-W boot time is 30-ish second and magnify toggle takes 3-4 second. Something must've been wrong with yours :(

I'm wary since we can't roll back at all. I'm hanging tight on 7.0.1 at the moment. I'm surprised to see that this is an update with no backup if it weren't to work. Maybe I've just gotten used to being able to roll back 1-2 "generations" of firmware.

Audy,

I have a Monstro with the Redvolt Expander and the 7" touch and DSMC2 OLED EVF so I suspect all the peripherals are adding time???

Hi Tom!
It could be, but we need to test further by removing all the peripherals or with different configurations. Mine is only attached with 4.7" monitor, DSMC2 Outrigger Handle and Jetpack Expander (HDMI). Boot time with auto blackshading is about 10 second slower than manual blackshading. Booting up or shutting down with a Mini Mag inserted also takes extra time, more so when they are full.

Interesting and that makes sense about Auto Calibration and Mini Mags adding time to the boot up. You have done these tests?

I am having the 2.9 f stop reading and pink/purple lines and or black lines (4.7" DSMC2 display) on my Raven when switching between record and preview modes. This doesn't happen when the display is hooked to other bodies.

I did create a support ticket.

Can someone explain why Red cameras take so long to boot up? My epic-w 8k takes about 60 sec’s.
Yet my Ursa Mini Pro takes about 5.7 seconds. Don’t remember how long my scarlet-w took but at least as long as the 30 seconds mentioned below. UMPro seems to have most of the same functionality - raw,ProRes, Luts and an actual 4K sdi out so why is red 5 to ten 10 times slower?

60s on Epic-W sounds like a lot, mine takes around 30-40s I think (on 7.0.1). But I do agree this is still way too long, and something Red should work on improving for future DSMC3 cameras...
On my DSMC1 Dragon, I used to have a Redvolt in the side handle to allow hot swapping the V-Mount battery without shutting the camera down, but that's no longer an option on DSMC2...

Long booting time is not a deal breaker, but it can definitely be a pain when you're in a hurry, which is like 90% of the time when you're on set ^^

For the record, my ~35 second boot time I mentioned before is on Epic-W with the V-Lock IO expander, Tilta top plate with rec start/stop handle, Tilta pogo extension cable and a 4.7" screen. I believe that was with a mini-mag inserted. Will update this post if I figured out that wasn't the case.

I’d probably try a camera wipe if boot is that long, and then replace all the settings manually / black shade again. I’ve had my fair share of lengthy boots and slow menu response times over the years, and starting fresh nearly always fixes those issues. Might just be some weird settings left over from an old build.

Also, very nice update on Gemini's 5K 6:5 format size and resolution. Nice to have access to that full height 18mm.

I've updated my tools with the new stuff.

Here's an example of the 2X anamorphic workflow on Epic-W 5K S35 Gemini:

Phil: headsup, Malwarebytes does not like your site. Says it contains malware - might want to look into that.

I just retested and found out that the Mini Mag is only effecting shutdown time, from about 2 seconds to ~10 seconds, but not the boot up time.
Tried booting up and shutting down with a full and empty Mini Mag (120GB) turns out to be same, I don't know somehow I felt it was a little bit slower when it's full.. (maybe I'm just imagining things, due to all that time pressure on location)!

Boot up time hugely impacted by the Auto Calibration (10 seconds slower) is confirmed.

Updating my report here.

I've been working with RED Support and they issued me a private beta build for Raven. It resolved the pink/black lines on the 4.7" screen during switching from playback to record modes. It also fixed the f/2.9 readout for f/2.8 lenses.
