  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Release v7.0.0

I agree. Before I would be viewing my histogram with my gamma curve applied and had the option to view the raw histogram, but preferred to see how things on the histogram looked with a bit of a curve to know where things were falling a little more closely to my final image. The goal posts showing raw is great though.

I also agree with Brandon and Malik. I would also like to have the option to switch between the new Log3g10 histogram to the the histogram of each specific gamma curve. I can't upgrade to V7 now anyways as I'm on a shoot for the next few weeks, but I'm not sure I will until the option to switch will be added, as I really prefer to expose according to the gamma I use.

Still is not that stable... I ve been having mayor issues... but is all part of the process... when it works properly, it is just AMAZING!!!

Ok, just had a few things happen today on a fairly easy-going shoot:

  • "Initializing" screen was stuck (had to hard reboot)
  • Mag had a momentary recording media error (ejected and reinserted for better recording)
  • Menus were really laggy

Sounds like others are having these as well. I do want to note that I didn't experience this over the past few days of shooting, just this afternoon - same gear I've always shot with, except today I had the start/stop top handle attached which I haven't previously.

Also, my Canon mount was updated again after I had used it on my Epic-X M-X Monochrome (which had firmware... 6.3.101 on it?)

My one question is how long should we normally experience Initializing... to stay on the screen?

Brendan, just as one example, with latest Firmware 7.0.0, REDMAG in & RED LCD monitor & V-Mount module only attached - From start button press to RED Logo @ approx. 15secs, Initializing notice @ approx. 30secs, ready to shoot @ approx. 35secs.

Andrej, it's just an option you can use in order to match your camera's ISO reading to the standards that light meters and other camera's are set to.

If you didn't see it already, to use the old calibration, just uncheck the 'Use updated ISO calibration' box found here -

Menu>Image>ISO> X Use updated ISO calibration
Thank you Les. My question was do other people have experienced increased noise (grain) in the gray (dark) aria of the picture wile using the 800iso with the new build. Did you?

I just had a look and can see what you're seeing Andrej. The actual exposure isn't changing though, it's just the way it's being shown on the monitor (and the wave-form on the histogram), now that different ISO numbers are being used.

To check it for yourself, set the ISO to 800 using the old ISO calibration, then change to the new ISO calibration (Menu>Image>ISO> X Use updated ISO calibration). The image will get a little brighter and show more noise (noise that was already there but which couldn't be seen on your monitor before) and the histogram will change a bit, just like you described. Then change the ISO to 400. The image on the monitor will now get darker and conceal the noise more, looking just like it did when using ISO 800 with the old ISO calibration. Again, there's no change in actual exposure, it's just that different ISO numbers (old and new ISO calibration) are being used for the same level of gain applied to the image on your monitor.

It's no big deal, and was just changed so the ISO numbers RED camera's use can match up to the ISO numbers other camera's and light meters use, if people want to do that.

Has anyone else seen a 2-5 second delay when hitting record. Meaning I push record, then takes 2-5 seconds for the red dot to be seen on the monitor. Epic W is the body. Thanks fellas.

Grzegorz,

I am seeing a longer than usual delay from hitting the record button to the red dot indicating record lights up on my Weapon CF after the v7 F&W upgrade. Not seeing as long as a delay as you though. I have not tested whether the actual record is delayed or just the indication

Tom,
When shooting 4k 120fps the delay is closer to 5 seconds, 8k frame rates its about 1-2 seconds. It's strange, I was seeing if I had hit a delay record option by accident in the menu. But not seeing anything like that.

Running a quick little test it definitely records some frames before the indicator dot is displayed.

On my Epic-W:

8K 24p
Hit record button at 03:43:29:13
Record indicator came on at 03:43:30:11
Clip recorded starts at 03:43:30:06

For my camera, that's a 0.9 sec delay for the indicator to come on, but only a 0.7 second delay to actually start grabbing frames.

Edit:

4K 120p, but 24p timebase
Hit record button at 04:00:47:22
Record indicator came on at 04:00:49:00
Clip recorded starts at 04:00:48:13

Button to record delay: 0.625 seconds
Button to record indicator delay: 1.08 seconds

I'm looking at video I shot of my screen on an iPhone, so these aren't accurate by any means, but should give a ballpark. I'm getting about a second delay for the indicator, and less than that to start grabbing frames.

I'm experiencing this as well on my Weapon MG

Im having a number of issues with the new firmware. Some of these were issues on the last firmware too.

I have a CF weapon/helium. dsmc2 7", base expander, wooden dbox + gold mount. Can list additional eq. if its relevant.

Happy to hear solutions if anyone has solved any of these issues.

- I am having the same record delay issue as op. The record sound happens quite a bit before the dot appears.
- I am seeing screen tearing on my 7" pretty frequenty. Usually a diagonal line across the monitor. Plugging and unplugging the cable seems to fix it.
- when I enter playback the fan blasts full power (similar to when you install firmware). Everyone on set looks at camera like its going to explode.
- when I enter playback and I am shooting with a Lut it seems like the lut is significantly exaggerated (more contrast/saturation, etc). Also it usually flashes on and off like 10 times before it fully loads playback. playback seems much slower than previous firmwares overall.
- the camera fan will blast full power and then the image will freeze, and eventually the camera will shut off. This seems to happen when battery is low, but not fully depleted. happens with vcxl or dionic around 10-15% charge. It seems to happen more often with all the aks going (cinetape, preston, wireless, etc) but its happened here and there with basically no external aks as well. With vclx it happens when power is going into the wooden dbox or the base expander.
- The readout on the monitor of the battery voltage dissappears occasionally on reboot. Its just an empty black space where its usually displayed on the monitor. Pretty unfortunately combo with the above issue.

Hey Thanks for that. I forgot to state also that pro ress 422lt at 2k was being recorded with r3d. If you get a min, run your test with a pro res proxy also. I'm using the 512gb mags as well.

+ 1 on the fan getting full fan blast on play back. Also right when playback pops up the color flickers quickly from a log look to the backed in.
+ 1 on getting a weird line across my monitor, unplugging helps.

When I shoot 120fps at 4k, the sdi signal has a weird lower split image on the client monitor. Only happens in 120fps, not 60 or 23.98. Just restart the camera and that lower split image goes away.

damn, think I'm going back to the old release. Keep getting hit with issues, and the fact I can't go between raw and lut histogram isn't working out great. Keep waiting until the next one I guess. But, I'm fine with the classic style for Scarlet-w, seems the new firmware is more focused on helium then it is for dragon cameras. Dragon colour 3 gamma 5? haha.
