  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Release v7.0.0

You mean you changed the histogram to show what the sensor sees, not according to color spaces and gammas? So we have more security in getting a proper exposed sensor each time?

Yup. It's sorta a raw/log hybrid (due to the scaling) and hence useful to tell you about exposure of the actual sensor.

And this works on Weapon MG as well? Not only cameras with internal IPP2?

But we need to see the exposure of our LUT too, so why not let us choose to use the histogram for the LUT and not only for the Log3G10?

Yep - so far that's been my experience with my MG. Even when shooting ProRes 4K or 2K only (which is recording DC2/Log3G10) it's giving me that histogram regardless of the LUT I'm seeing on-screen.

I agree. Before I would be viewing my histogram with my gamma curve applied and had the option to view the raw histogram, but preferred to see how things on the histogram looked with a bit of a curve to know where things were falling a little more closely to my final image. The goal posts showing raw is great though.

Since upgrading to the new firmware 7.0, the RAW clip meter (traffic lights) and right RAW level Bar are dormant on the Epic-W - no response even when clearly overexposed. Left bar works. Any ideas? Or did I set something wrong?

Anyone else experienced increased grain in the gray aria of the picture while shooting with iso800?
the camera is epic w helium with the new v7.0.0 firmware
The calibration (black shading) was done before the shooting.

How do I switch the shutter settings from fraction of a second to degrees permanently on the new firmware? I can't see the panel where you can set all of your various options like that. I also want to change the Motion Mount to density as that's how most people relate ND values. Anyone know?

I just received two Weapon Heliums and they're both on firmware 7.0.....Is it ok to roll back to 6.3.105? I've got the WC cable less gold mount modules and don't really want to loose the data going to the camera. I'd really like to take advantage of IPP2 in camera, but I guess I'll wait until there's a fix in January :(

For now you could use the Ptap to lemo power cable to have battery info.

Bob, is that what you're going to do? I need to buy a couple more cable-less Gold mounts and I'm at a loss for what to do......Such a bummer bc I really love the WC stuff. But waiting for a solution which may or may not come by the end of the year is tough.

I had to switch back to the previous version I was getting a ton of issues (the main one was the power issue with WC) I will wait for the a newer updated Firmware. On my Epic W I had an issue with powering up (give me an error message and shut down) and also had an issue with R3D/Prores recording at the sametime. But excited to work with burned in looks in the Proxies!!!

This update pretty much broke my Scarlet-W.

I had a few problems with my newly bought RED Scarlet-W. At times the DSMC2 SIDE HANDLE would stop working, and wouldn't respond to any commands before a camera restart, in a few occasions it would start working again after using the Touch Screen. I also had the LCD tearing issue, described in this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?137388-Split-Screen-(vertical-line-down-LCD-monitor)-Issue

I realized that the installed firmware was old, so I decided to install the newly released: "DSMC2 RELEASE BUILD V7.0.0 OCTOBER 5, 2017". Fortunately my following shoot was one that was in-house and without any clients present, because my camera was almost unusable.

- Switching resolution would sometimes cause the video to go black
- Adjusting ISO and White Balance was very sluggish, more than usual
- Changing white balance wouldn't do anything to the image on the monitor
- Pressing button assigned to RAW tool, would show the green "RAW" text, but do nothing for the image
- Magnify tool would be very slow, and sometimes take up to 10 seconds going back and forth
- SSD would suddenly fail, giving me a message that media was full even though it wasn't, at one point even caused a critical failure that prompted to shut down the camera
- Once or twice after power on, would only show bright horizontal lines (glitches) on the monitor
- The SSD user buttons and sidehandle buttons would respond to commands more than half a minute after they where pressed, or at times not respond at all
- The camera would freeze up completely, and after a minute or so the fans would speed up to 100% like it does when upgrading the firmware

These are some of problems I had yesterday on my shoot, and I managed to replicate some of them again this morning and film it with my phone:

I do plan on making a support ticket, and provide a log-file, but I just wanted to make sure others update their firmware to this version with a lot of caution.

I just downgraded to "DSMC RELEASE BUILD V6.3.105 OCTOBER 5, 2017", so far everything looks good, although it seems like my problems with the sidehandle occasionally not responding has returned.

This is why:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/red_3/downloads/other/white-papers/ISO Recalibration for HELIUM.pdf

You're looking at ISO 800 (which used to be 1600). If you want to compare with old 800 material, you have to use today's 400.

Thank you for that info AAron. I already knew that when I was testing the camera but I still don't get it. Why would they (the red guys) do such a thing when it affects the picture in that manner? And they are recommending to use iso800!?

Andrej, it's just an option you can use in order to match your camera's ISO reading to the standards that light meters and other camera's are set to.

If you didn't see it already, to use the old calibration, just uncheck the 'Use updated ISO calibration' box found here -

Menu>Image>ISO> X Use updated ISO calibration

That video is brutal! I would do support ticket with log ASAP!

Still no support for WC battery plate? What ever happened to OBSOLESCENCE, RED?

This seems like an attempt by RED to get users to purchase their battery plates (and their own batteries) over Wooden Camera. I love RED's openness with third parties but based on statements by both RED and Wooden Camera - RED seems to be closing the door on WC.

To confirm my suspicions from RED (Bold is my own):

"Thank you for contacting RED Support.

I am sorry to hear about this issue with your Wooden Camera product. Have you been in contact with wooden camera regarding this issue? They would be the best people to contact. This battery plate is not part of our third-party approved products and might not be designed up to RED specification. This is something wooden camera would need to work on resolving. My other suggestion would be to purchase a battery plate that is part of our approved list or a RED branded battery plate versus one that was reverse engineered."

I would love to purchase a RED branded battery plate but their design is simply terrible.
