  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Firmware Release Build v5.3.29

I really hope I would never have to post this - but my camera is dead.
I avoid upgrading to beta FW before any jobs and only upgrade to new release FW after it has been out for at least 1-2 weeks.
I have never had any problems upgrading my camera before.

Here is what happened:

1. Formatted my REDMAG in preparation to load new firmware
2. Shut down the camera
3. Loaded new firmware onto the REDMAG on my computer
4. Inserted REDMAG into the camera

At this point the camera (Scarlet X) has the 5" TOUCH LCD, SIDE SSD, SIDE HANDLE (no REDVOLT inside) and REDMOTE on the back. Camera plugged into main AC power

5. Powered camera up
6. The fan does its usual "747 taking off" stuff and after few seconds the camera powered OFF
7. Removed the REDMAG

Up until this point this is what always happened without any issues...

8. Powered camera up - the fan comes on and "tries to breath" (that is the best way I can describe this). It spins for about 1-2 seconds, then gulps (briefly pauses the spinning for a split second) - then again spins for 1-2 sec and gulps. This repeats 10 times and then the camera just powers OFF. At no point anything appears on the LCD...

I have tried loading previous FW, tried all various combinations of attached peripherals (and of course without any peripherals attached as well - not even the LCD) - camera still won't boot up.
Submitted support ticket to RED...

Any other ideas or similar experiences?

Peter

Peter, I don't know anything, but I think the REDMOTE has to be not in the picture to do an update? At least that's what it says in the literature.....

I have always upgraded in this way and never had any problems.
See also the comments from RED on the previous pages when they say that really doesn't matter as the firmware has patches for all peripherals. I am normally asked after the upgrade reboot to then update the REDMOTE, but this time the camera won't even power back up, nor it loads any previous firmware. Certainly not what I would expect from a release firmware...

Peter,
As I said, I don't know much...(I do know your work is stunning as I have followed it here on REDuser) My camera bricked and I sent it back to RED. They performed miracles and it cost me nothing, despite the fact that my camera is like 2 years out of warranty. Contact the service department (as you say you already have) and while it is a bummer. you will be taken care of.

+1 to what Scot said. I had a problem many upgrades ago with the Redmote attached and have always removed the Redmote ever since. No problems with firmware upgrades after that.

And simply re-installing the Redmote after the upgrade allows the Redmote to upgrade from included onboard firmware.

That said, I haven't upgraded to the latest release build yet.

Hi, I don't have any menu when the camera boot up just after the upgrade.

And the menu button from the side handle doesn't work too.

Do you have some clue about that?

Thanks

Elsie - the question then is - when you did have the problem with the REDMOTE attached during upgrade - did it brick your camera to the point where you could not load even the previously working firmwares?
What kind of problem did you encounter and how did you ended up resolving it?

No, it didn't brick my camera.

I was just hoping that yours could be reclaimed but I'm starting to realize that yours is probably a goner, as you have suggested. IIRC, mine would simply not upgrade until I removed the REDMOTE.

But thanks for posting. I will not be updating my firmware until this apparent bug is fixed.

Peter, did you try the "hard reset" thing? "Hard Restore" RED calls it.

from the manual

SCREEN FREEZES OR DOES NOT DISPLAY
SYMPTOM
The screen freezes or does not display.

Perform a Hard Restore. A Hard Restore functions like a System Restore in that it changes all settings to the
factory default values.
To perform a Hard Restore, follow the instructions below:
1. Press and hold the PWR/REC button on the BRAIN for 20 seconds or until the fans turn at a high speed.
2. Release the PWR/REC button.
The screen displays correctly.
NOTE: User key settings will be reset as well as any other changes from the default settings. The REDMOTE will
also require pairing to communicate wirelessly with the BRAIN.

That was the first thing RED SUPPORT suggested - camera does not respond to it (or anything else)... :(

Peter,
I just got my camera back from RED today after it bricked on me. I had upgraded the firmware the day before and all worked fine that day. The next day...disaster. I sent it back (as you will have to) and it turned out to be a bad board. They replaced that board and upgraded two others (plus replaced an audio jack I didn't know was bad) all at no cost. What is your serial number? In another post somebody told me they had had the same problem, and their serial number was close in sequence to mine. He referred a story about a batch of bad boards at that time.

I'm doing some rigging of a 5" touch on a gimbal……needing Flip AND Flop to mount it inverted. Does anyone know if this new release firmware has that feature?

It does not, but there is new circuitry in the 7.0" LCD Touch that supports this and I think it's lighter weight even.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that…...Eventually I'll buy the 7" but not today……..Thanks for saving me a bunch of time looking and hoping.

Updating now. My pwr and rec lights have been flashing green for a good half-hour now, maybe more. The monitor says "Firmware upgrade... may take several minutes, etc." Did it take this long for everyone else?

Edit: At least an hour now and still going.

Update: Support helped. It had indeed froze. A force shutdown cleared things up, and now it works like a charm.

It sounds like you (accidentally?) changed the overlay on your monitor? Double check in Menu > Settings > Display > Monitor Control what the "Overlay" setting is for the monitor in question. By default it is "Standard (RED)".

Yes you're right. I changed it by accident when flipping the monitor.
Thanks trent

Has anyone been able to get Fuji Cabrios to work with this new firmware? I read that the 'lens record button' is now mapped to trigger the record function. I've tried on all three Cabrios, the camera has the correct mappings for the keys, and I've tried LDS and Cooke settings on the lens. None seem to work. RDC says it does work in the firmware... If you can get it to work, would you mind sharing how you were able to do that?

Thanks!

Fuji Cabrio / Red UPDATE!

Just got off the phone with Manny from Fuji... Here's the deal... and YES, it works! And YES! I'm one happy camper!

You MUST power the lens from another source, not the Epic. That much I knew; I use the 20 pin to AB D-tap...(I want the 20pin to Lemo next!). HOWEVER, the lens must be powered up first, then the camera! So if you swap lenses... you'll unfortunately have to power down first! Bummer, but hey, now the lens data is in all 3 of the Cabrios, (and all the Red Epics/Scarlets) AND you can trigger the record function from the lens! No more having to reach up with your left hand to 'red light' the Epic! So SWEET! Jarred Land, Matt Biederman, Trent Lillehaugen and all the others who worked on this... I apologize for the bombardment over the past 3 years... but damn! You guys made it happen! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Truly!

Oh... one more thing... I almost forgot! You need to TURN OFF the LDS function on the lens, and make it Cooke! (That's dip switch number 2 in the smaller (4 switch) grouping... turn that off or to the left!

If the switch is set properly, the keys mapped in the Red's (it is by default for the "Lens" key mapping feature), and you power the lens first... you get yummy goodness! Thanks Red team!

Scot, no worries and thanks for the kind words. I am sure RED will sort it out one way or another. It just caught me by surprise as I have never had any problems with release build upgrading on camera. Just a really bad timing...

P

Peter,
Wondering if you got your camera fixed, and what the problem was...
