  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Camera Firmware release 5.1.55 and 5.2.21 beta

This is all great news.

Won't ask when, but I am sure you guys are on it. :)

You do not need to change the calibration when you switch OLPF... another reason why we are doing D.E.B. and everything in RAW.

Really hate to be the one to reduce this game-changing idea down to a level of filthy lucre... but is this going to be provided for Dragons by RED or will it be a paid-for accessory?

For example, this quick change OLPF that we are working on for the Dragon really is long overdue.. and will give people back their low-light , low-noise dragons at the expense of extended highlights.. if that is what they want.

No matter how much we say that one is better than the other, the choice really comes down to you.

The freedom and flexibility to make that kind of decision in different environments should be beneficial to everyone.. even if they only make the choice once and never change it again.

Thank you to everyone that is supportive in this process... I know it can be a bit of a roller coaster sometimes.

Oh wow, this changes everything.. Thanks!

Now we have the best of both world, great low light, and great highlights!

This is great news. Interchangeable OLPF's will really increase the versatility of an incredibly versatile camera as it stands already.

Jarred, will there be a standard set of OLPFs that come as part of a swappable kit? Personally I am looking forward to either a weaker LP or no LP option in addition to a version for IR photography.

+1 on this.

I'm really excited about the quick switch Olpf. It's really going to give everyone the flexibility then need. Well we have to send our cameras in to get the quick switch tech installed or will it be something we can do ourselves, or is it again too early to say?

Curious about this as well.

More Graemes!

More Graemes!

Following on Stacey's thought I like the idea of starting the "Swappable Era" with 3 to 5 options and some sort of "compensation" in the camera FW to correlate the monitor rendition to maintain as close to WYSIWYG as practical.

I wonder how various OLPFs will effect critical focus? A recent thread on CML Glass made quite a case for the impact of OLPFs on back focus settings - essentially saying that collimating by measurement of FFD alone was not reliable. One suggestion was to set a standard for OLPFs that included physical thickness and other key parameters that camera manufacturers could follow to give lens designers a known target. Makes sense to me…

IAC, done well, having swappable OLPFs with optimized processing paths for each should break through some of the limitations inherent in a "one size fits all" OLPF. Fine tuning the reconstruction algorithms for several different OLPFs is not a trivial task. Perhaps we could clone Graeme? ;-)

Cheers - #19

Blair's post is, for me anyway, a shock back to the reality that this is probably not going to happen very soon. Hopefully in 2014, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen until 2015.

Would like to be wrong, though. But whenever it happens, this just ups the stakes in the camera arms race. I love CAMERA arms races. '-)

Hi Jarred, Any extra screws ito be included in the kit. Also, I and sure many others have thought about some sort of semi-clean room/ similar technique, for changing these OLPF's in the field. A biohazard hood, with negative pressure, in yjis case came to mind, but was instantly dismissed. Any ideas on some negative pressure type of apparatus ? Is the tools a quad torque screwdriver?

Thank you very much

Can I add RedGamma4 & DragonColor on this build under "LOOK" so it gets added into the .RMD on the RedMag.

It's kinda annoying having to add it in CineX plus I have to make sure editorial & the colorist know to render under those settings.

Was just on a show and the DP refused to Firmware update so I haven't had a chance to look for myself.

If the camera itself doesn't have REDgamma4 and DRAGONcolor compatible firmware installed I don't believe this will work.

You can however make a Look Preset with just the color and gamma info to apply it to all clips later.

Honestly though, they need to update the camera firmware.

I see the wisdom of it.

Thank you.

Public Beta of RCX with D.E.B should be released tomorrow.
