DSMC Accessories

ok just to clarify
what do i need to order along with
http://www.red.com/store/rail-components/product/dsmc-quick-release-platform-packn
to get an epic on a standard arri dovetail, an oconnor head and so all arri euqipment like follow focus/MB etc. works like a charm
this?
http://www.red.com/store/rail-components/product/mounting-plate-epic-2

or do we need the mounting plate for epic if we want to use the old red arri baseplate and the quick release platform is already the "new" arribaseplate type of thing?

and why this dovetail-- Dovetail Mounting Plate [Long] (for non-ARRI heads)
where to use this dovetail?

would be great if the shop would have some rails bundles listed, for cinestyle for example :)
thanks for clarification

Yeah, now im really confused.

We have Arri Standard
We have RED Quick release whoch looks awesome

BUT... most of our A/C's are CURMUDGEONS who loathe change.

So I want the cool new RED QUICK RELEASE system for myself and other progressives

and ARRI Standard for the Curmudgeons

What do I order to make my Epic fly on Arri Standard mounting gear?

My understanding from John's post a few pages back was that this version of the QR platform mounted directly onto a standard Arri dovetail.

I'm guessing a dovetail is included with the kit so you can mount the QR platform on that and then bolt it onto non-Arri systems, as an interim solution until the bolt-on version of the QR platform is available.

And that new Epic plate that was just added to the store is the piece that goes between the Epic and the QR platform, btw, nothing to do with the tripod

OK I think I jsut read the website wrong.

RED's new QR system IS ARRI STANDARD... and also comes with an adapter for NON-ARRI Standard mounting plates.

Perfect.

I'm a bit confused as to what situations the QR system could be useful in.
It looks like the 19mm rods would stay on the base plate which means by using the QR you just separate the camera body from the rest of the assembly (rods with MB and FF), which doesn't seem very useful. You usually want to remove the entire setup from the tripod head to go handheld or mount to a dolly, crane, etc.
If on the other hand you are not using rods and have the camera in a light setup (like in ketch's video) then what are you getting from using the QR system versus mounting the camera body directly to the tripod quick release plate (and thereby saving weight)?
I do see that the Clutch uses the same system so it would make sense if you are using that specific shoulder mount. But if you are using a rod-mounted FF and/or MB then you'd have to remove them from the rods on the tripod to put them on those of the Clutch.

Am I missing something?

Other than this questionning, I have to say the new DSMC accessories look fantastic! Love the Red Gunner in particular.

Arri 15mm Studio 100mm spacing

Arri 15mm Studio 100mm spacing

How do we know what will work from our existing accessories with the Epic... and what of the new accessories will work with some of the old parts ie... will the old EVF work with the new viewfinder system or is it only for the Bomb? Will the Arri plate (I have a 15mm) work with the Epic or is a riser needed to be able to use some lenses and matte box?

Yes Jarred,

Is Red making Arri 15mm Studio configurations of the accessories shown in the store? And if so how does one go about ordering these versions if the 19mm versions are the only ones shown?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

You guys are confusing yourselves... I saw this system in action last year in Vegas. It super simple. It a modular base plate, meaning that the rods can change from 19mm to 15mm bye changing the front and back universal mounts. The base plate itself comes equipped to receive an ARRI standard dovetail. (I think they give you the dovetail plate so that you can mount it to any tripod and shoot even if you don't have a ARRU dovetail.) Then you have your choice of Connecting plate(this is the plate that connects to your individual camera). The options I saw were Epic, Scarlet, Low profile Red One and Red One riser. I also saw a 15mm studio adaptor that can bolt to a universal mount or directly on to the front of the plate.

The other quick release plate I saw was a bolt on version. It didn't have any rail support and didn't have a dovetail slot, only mounting holes in the base. They said it was intended for situations where you don't have a massive studio setup... ie when you are going out with your Epic and a light-weight tripod. They also have this Bolt-on plate connected up to the Gunner so you could quick release from one setup to the other. When you see the Quick release in action it pretty impressive. The move between 3 completely different lockdown setups in under 10 seconds. The more stuff you get the better the system works. But again, this was a year ago... But the stuff looks pretty close to what I saw Last year.

Cheers!

excellent POST! RED should out some of this on their website imho.

People look at price and freak out... but when you price this compared to a Mantis and Arri Bottom Plate and etc... its about the same price.

I guess the quick release is to aid installation in different setups, but not to move cam with lens and FF. I assume there is another mounting point on the bottom of the entire rig, so it can be built on sticks and released for shooting. Can we see the bottom of the rig?

I tried the similar set up at Red party last year, and the back pad felt great - it held up the camera front without using weighted counterbalance. I'd still think about hanging a battery on the back to balance more on the shoulder.

What's this one for? Use only with clamp-on matteboxes? (or mattboxes using a lightweight 15mm rod adapter accessory mounted on the front of the RED One body)?

Outrigger Handles just came in.. going live in about an hour :)

Ah refresh, refresh, refresh.... ;)

Is that the same handle you had on your EPIC at NAB Jarred?
