  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DSMC Accessories

There will be times when I don't want to attract too much attention so I can shoot freely.

In those cases I'll use simple flat black gaff tape as needed. If I want to really make my EPIC look prosumer, I'll put Sony and Canon stickers on it. :001_smile:

i love the fat red signs on the gear, same goes for the names of the products........just imagine a BOMB PRO EVF.....waiting for that hehe
I have to admit that i'm also biased to products with less branding on them.
I tend to tape off all the Logos on my gear, because people often reduce gear to the brand.
Like: "oh look he uses canon, oh look nikon, oh look iPhone"

I don't think it is the most retarded discussion. I bet that even a Star-Designers like John Ive would probably prefer getting rid of the apple logo from his designs, because they would look even better. And just because everyone else does it doesn't mean one has to follow.
I thought that RED's philosophy was to change the industry, change all that big name bullshit and be the one that goes the other way. Making great products that stand for themselves.

I think good design can stand out by itself. you never see a big fat logo on a piece of designer furniture.
But everyone still knows what it is.

Anyway, before i get kicked of this forum i would like to add that it's just my opinion.

Are these 15mm based, or still 19?

BTW - I love the "look and feel" of these things. They invite the viewer to put their hands around them, if that makes any sense.

RED wants feedback, yes... I would put #994 on the line that if a poll was taken, those who prefer no branding would fall into a teeny tiny percentage of just those who took the poll... maybe 2% on the best of days...

I think the branding should be bigger. How many times has someone been staring at smart side of camera and asked, "Is that the new Sony?" "What kind of camera is that?" Nevermind mind the metallic "RED"...
Can you guys re-design ALL cameras beginning with the word RED as the basis of design? Just take a block of the letters and then fit everything inside... (See, that would be retarded...)

I was watching a BMW "Behind the scenes" video for one of their commercials, and I saw a lot of shots showing cameras at work that looked vaguely RED-like but maybe too big to be RED:

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/03/bmw-wants-new-mad-men/

(It's the first video on the page). Youtube's quality is so awful it's impossible in my eyes to make out the camera, but I have a hunch it's an Alexa.

It sure would have been nice to see a big bold RED or Arri logo so I would have known :).

Incidentally, I have been surprised how many random people I talk to know what a RED camera is. Your marketing is working :).

we make 15mm version for the modular base plates / QR plates. for everything else you can use 15mm inserts if you want.

Just a few suggestions. 0.0000002

The left side handle: A slightly shorter version that brings your hand to the same distance from the center of gravity as your right hand is when using the (right side) grip.
Two connection protection plates: One for the back of the brain, or back of the last module. And one for the (right hand) grip. Just thin, flush and light metal pieces that snap into place.
Bigger Red logos on all surfaces, glow in the dark if possible.

Everything looks great and solid.

I've thought the very same thing! And are you talking about when the side handle is off the body?

are you talking about the L shaped handle? you need to feel the weight distribution in person if you haven't already.. it puts your hand forward with heavier lenses to offset the camera drooping forward... and puts your fingers close enough to focus ring on lenses to adjust. It feels really good :)

protection panel is coming for back... right hand grip when its off already comes with a protection plate that goes on if you are not using the side handle.

Jarred,
When might the quick release be avail for purchase. I saw one and it is so light and cool I just have to have one.....

Peter

I saw this thing at the RED event last year... So badass... If you look closely at the pictures of the Clutch system, you can see that all the pieces needed to make a quick-release base plate are included within the Clutch system. Just take off the front handles and the shoulder pad, then bolt the universal mounts back into the base plate and you have a quick release base plate. You gotta love how RED makes all their accessories so modular.

Nice job guys. This rig would probably work amazing on a DSLR as well huh? Although I think the Gunner is going to be the real show stopper.

Great to hear about the plates. More logo-friendly real estate I say.

Nik, that is the same handle, and the one I was talking about.

I see. What you are saying makes great sense now. I have played with one, but didn't actually operate it enough to really know. BTW, you could change that, if you felt like it. :massive smile:

Okay, yeah that this is really tight, i usually don't ask for prices when i'm sure that i won't get an answer but this time, i cannot resist, how much??

Noob question about the QR Platform Pack...if you have an Arri head you clamp the Red QR platform directly onto your head's plate, and if you don't you clamp the Red QR platform onto the included Arri plate and then screw that into your head's plate? Is that right?

There will be two QR Platforms, a dovetail version designed to be ARRI Dovetail compliant and a Bolt-On version that will simply attach to a standard 1/4-20 or 3/8 tripod head. As always, your choice!
