I would like that Dragon's Colour Science get closer to the colours that were reproduced by the best digital photo camera of today Sigma DP1 Merrill.

Please see the image below!!!!

OK, Dragon is CMOS and Sigma DP1 Merrill is Foveon sensor.

We do not need to discuss a both sensor differences here at this tread but only to think about your desired colours with Dragon

and maybe try to use Sigma DP1 Merrill as a sort of digital acquisition colour reference.

Also do not forget that Sigma DP1 Merrill has more than 16 stops of DR.

Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably the same like a Dragon!!!!

Shot on Sigma DP1 Merrill, 19mm, f/3.2, Shutter 1/50, ISO 100, Auto WB, Colour Mode: Vivid.

Also you can download Sigma DP1 Merrill full size file in JPG here

The Sigma DP1 Merrill marks a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the DP1x, and delivers some of the most beautiful, detailed images at low ISOs that we've ever seen from a camera in its price range.

For me Sigma DP1 Merrill is the best photo digital camera at the moment and also it's a bargain!!!!

Sigma DP-1 Merril Digital Camera with 46 Megapixel, FOVEON X3 Direct Image Sensor, Fixed 19mm f/2.8 Lens

Price: $798.00

And if Dragon gets closer to Sigma DP1 colours everybody can be happy!!!!!

Sorry guys but the best sensor on the market right now for digital stills is the phase one iq series. There is no equal. I have a p45+ for my hassleblad and the epic doesn't come close for stills.

The capture one pro software is the digital standard for stills and every time I use my digital back on my 500 series hassy with my 1980's German Zeiss glass I am amazed. I usually shoot with mk3 super speeds on my epic but I had a lens tech make a hassleblad to pl adapter and my 80's hassy glass matches perfectly with them especially my 120 mm hassleblad macro

Phase One IQ280 although highest count 80Mega pixel photo camera but unfortunately has only about 13 stops of DR.

p45+ has even less DR and about 12 stops.

Graeme, can you talk a little about the raw handling differences between MX and Dragon? In general terms if it's proprietary and how we should interpret what we see?

Dragon is nicer....

Looking forward to it, Graeme! We all appreciate everything you do behind the scenes!

Quick question - will the Dragon camera be able to load 3D LUTs? That would be amazing. Shoot RedLogFilm and apply a 3D LUT (film emulation, redgamma lut, etc)
Do you think it's possible?

Thanks!
George

Graeme, I'm not so sure.

The test on your link is based on DxO Analyzer v5 that is mostly suited for CMOS sensors.

Anyway Sigma DP1 Merrill is pretty good in a range of ISO 100-200 when as I was already wrote has more than 16 stops of DR.

Of course when you use Sigma Photo Pro RAW converter software it shows that MAGIC!!!!!

Already I owe and work on several types of RAW converter apps like Capture Pro 7, DXO Optics Pro 8, Adobe PS 6, Lightroom 5, Nikon View NX2,

Canon Digital Photo Professional, Red RCX Pro, ARRIRAW Converter 2.4.0.b11 OS X Lion just to name a few

and there is no any RAW so flexible with pulling or pushing exposure or getting maximum of high DR like Sigma X3F RAW file.

Best is to try SIGMA DP1 Merrill for yourself and avoid to read many of those flat written camera tests online.

Anyway there is a good one review from the Canadian expert photographer Michael Reichmann, Publisher – The Luminous Landscape

MR is a good friend of mine. No mention of DR, just an unsubstantiated claim from you, and there's zero difference between DR on sensor type - you measure it the very same way, and don't forget Foveons are CMOS too....

Graeme, I agree.

My intention is not to discuss Sigma DP1 Merrill camera models, anyway there are pretty good cameras if you know to use it.

Sigma DP1 Merrill colours are amazing just because it reminds me on the colour rendition from 65mm film scans

something like I've seen in Samsara or The Master (both movies available on Blu-ray).

My wish was that Dragon gets close or similar to that wide colour gamut.

To be honest I fail to see what is so special about these images, certainly nothing that MX can't do better! Zoom in on these still and you'll see how much CA and distortion, lack of detail and just plain mush these images produce, especially at the corners.

If this represents for you what Red should be aiming at, then I don't know what to say...

Sigma 19mm lens is :

"The best lens and the best sensor. These are the pillars that support Sigma's photographic philosophy in action.
After all, designing and manufacturing lenses is at the core of what we do best.
The lens on the Sigma DP1 Merrill creates consistently crisp, high-contrast images with accurately rendered ultra-fine detail.
Outstanding image surface characteristics provide excellent sharpness in the plane of focus while gently transitioning to beautiful bokeh in other areas."

The construction of special design lens
fig2.png

"To maximize image quality while minimizing lens barrel length, Sigma combined one FLD glass
and two glass molded aspherical lens elements with one high-refraction glass element.
The result is a short lens exhibiting virtually ideal optical characteristics in a “Wide angle” focal length."

Read more at the LINK>>>>

and at the end I didn't want to talk about Sigma lens, sensor or camera in that way.

And I was just talking about the examples of wide gamut colours captured with digital camera and upcoming Dragon Colour Science...

More constructive discussion appreciate only...
