  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGONolor2 and REDcolor4 Beta and the H20 underwater OLPF

I too have found Rudi's input to be a contribution and I hope he can can return as well.

As for where I would be without RED, try spending a boat load of money on the next HDCAM that shoots 4:2:2 1080P and over cranks to 60fps. Awesome.

Anyone test for technical accuracy RedColor4 vs DragonColor2 on Mx footage?

BTW this really does seem to solve the last few granules of dissatisfaction I had with color on MX. Thank you very kindly, RedTeam and happy Holidays to all.

Awesome insight Matt, working for Fabien Cousteau has taught me a lot about honor and integrity, how the real mission is so much more important than community recognition, or mastery of minutiae, we have to call it as we see it.

Rudi does that, in spades, he has kept all of us honest. Embarrassingly so, as one of the first recipients of his withering and very astute criticism, I am the first to admit that.

Red has enabled some astonishing story telling, nobody can successfully argue to the contrary. But there was once a time when they were the Black Sheep to the granite-like entrenched, that Great Wall of Fuck You, they fought for the right to exist, and triumphed. In the most astonishing way.

Guys like Rudi are blood brothers in the spirit of that endeavor.

Here are a couple of frames one with DC2 and the second DC(1). I notice that DC2 gets us deeper into the shadows so a slight increase of FLUT brings the exposure back up but not at the expense of the grainy red noise in the blues. I also had to desaturate a bit. First impression is that what it gains in deeper blues also allows more control in the other channels to make the image really 'pop'.

I need to know where the red FCPX plug in resides so I can delete it asap, it's reaking havoc on my projects since I installed the new beta. Anyone?

I don't have numbers for you Robert, but both are accurate on MX. There's some subtle difference between RC4 and DC2 which takes into account the sensor / OLPF differences between those cameras. I'd not use RC4 on Dragon as it doesn't really need those differences, but I'm happy to use DC2 on older footage.

Graeme

First of all thank you again Phil for your tireless testing and giving back to this forum. And thank you Graeme for ...well... everything....

And Jarred it seems an underwater test shoot at that classic Fijian dive site named "LAND's END" is in order nest pas?

yes please.... just waiting for you to stop shooting all your crazy bazillion dollar films so you have time to take me...

Thanks Robert... coming from you that means a lot to us.

Gentlemen I totally agree with Tom hamilton here. Uncertain why people reacted so aggressively to Rudi's post. He spoke the truth somewhat bluntly but I find the reaction from some Redusers that they would like to "Shit on his porch" way more offensive than anything Rudi said. I would rather see these posters banned. I don't imagine they use this language on set when disagreeing with fellow professionals. Why be so defensive about such a great camera system? As professionals we should be able to discuss the weaknesses along with the strengths. Frankly if there wasn't room to improve the "blue response" why would Graheme be improving it ? I am personally looking forward to testing and I am confident that Graheme has taken us another step forward

After installing RedcineX 33 I only see "Red Color 4, Dragon Color 2, Rec 709 and sRGB"

Is this normal? How can I get all other Color Spaces back?

In the Dragon samples there's both Skin Tone - Highlight and Low Light Optimized OLPF examples. That lower key shot of myself is the STH.

Thanks, Phil! I stand firm with you in liking STH. Everyone criticizing "RED skin tones" should give STH and DragonColor2 a whirl with an open mind, methinks.

That's what I'll be telling people throughout 2015 anyway, methinks, till I am blue in the face. I really like this combo.

And so, in the spirit of the Holiday Season, and in celebration of what the RDC team has accomplished with the new color science and the UW OLPF, I would be most grateful if you might rescind his ban. I know for a fact, that if this all works out as I, and everyone else is fervently hoping, then Rudi will be the first one to admit he was wrong, eat crow. With a rueful smile. That is his style, he is a man of great integrity.

Oh yes of course. I think / hope that this was kind of done with a bit of a cheerful "he should have known better, he's an old-timer - ha, bet he won't expect this!" chuckle by Jarred - and that Rudi will be back and posting cheerfully again soon.

To be honest, if I said something regrettable and got banned here as part of a traditional "remember Jim's spirit" ban-a-thon, it'd be pretty awesome and funny and an honor in a strange sort of way.

But I do have a weird sense of humor.

Please add my vote to the "Jarred, forgive Rudi as a benevolent gesture for the New Year" club. Auld Lang Syne and all that. He's written some really interesting stuff over the years...

Anyway, either way, I really like ze DragonColor2. And the STH. And the yay!

I've had zero issues with Dragon in regards to Skin Tones both on natural and artificial light. The color is good and it's "there". The new Color Science is certainly interesting in how it "pops", but some of the color accuracy improvements are what's real nice to me. I'm not having any real issues mixing and matching LLO and STH OLPF footage. I mean, they are calibrated towards the same target. I'm actually about to swap back to the STH right this second after the last couple gigs.

Personally for me the STH is where some of the chewy goodness of what Dragon provides is. That said, the LLO is crazy valuable in certain shooting conditions. It's good to have it around for sure.

I just threw the new colour science on an MX clip that I had trouble colour correcting for my end of year showreel (https://vimeo.com/115326793). Blue Water in Fiji at default settings on both versions, tricky in REDcolour3, so much better in DRAGONcolour2, can't wait for this OLPF.

STH is the best--until you are blue in the face. Then switch to H20 and let DC2 really show its stuff!

Have a Merry Christmas Day and a Happy New Year!

Love the new colours. Thanks Graeme and everyone else there at Red for the continued improvements.

Thanks too Phil and others for the excellent comparison pics, shows really clearly where the changes are happening.
