  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGONolor2 and REDcolor4 Beta and the H20 underwater OLPF

Here is a comparison of Dragon with Dragon color2 and Scarlet MX with dragon color 2. New color science did a lot to bridge the gap between them. The dragon seems to be just a hair more contrasty given the same settings

When I first open a R3D file in the new beta version of RCX, Red Color 4 is in the menu with all the other options. But after I select Red Color and open the menu again to go back, all the other Red Color options are no longer there or available. Rec 709 and the other are still available.

Can you clairfy Joe? RC4 and DC2 should *always* be in that menu together with 709 & sRGB. The older ones are hidden per default, unless you 1) load a clip that had that set on the camera (the specific one recorded with comes back), or 2) you enable advanced controls in RCX preferences.

I need to know where the red FCPX plug in resides so I can delete it asap, it's reaking havoc on my projects since I installed the new beta. Anyone?

Eric,

Can you please email (rob at red) me that crash log instead of PM on reduser as I did not get it!

I believe the plugin is installed here: /Library/Application Support/ProApps/PlugIns/VendorSpecific/RED.bundle

Rob

I have had no issue with my Dragon footage and FCPX with new color update.

I don't have numbers for you Robert, but both are accurate on MX. There's some subtle difference between RC4 and DC2 which takes into account the sensor / OLPF differences between those cameras. I'd not use RC4 on Dragon as it doesn't really need those differences, but I'm happy to use DC2 on older footage.

Graeme

Thank you Graeme! Which do you personally prefer on MX? All the best to you and your family over the holidays.

Can we use DC2 on Resolve 11? or we have to wait for an upgrade?

The SDK has been sent out. It's up to BMD and Adobe and "everybody" to update their software now.

Thanks Phil,

Lets wait that they do it fast cause it seems a great improvement...

Agreed and hopefully they will include DEB also which would be huge.

Dragoncolor vs DragonColor2 compared

Dragoncolor vs DragonColor2 compared

It works great for me! I see a more detail in the highlight areas of the headlights AND the blue is much more saturated. Impressed! I made a before and after comparison.

Tech Notes:
-6k Epic Dragon Source Footage Originally filmed with DragonColor / RG4
-Fujinon Cabrio 19-90
-3200k lighting from (6) 6k space lights
-Full Debayer ADD Tiff export taken into photoshop.
-4k wide crop and insert

DC2 works on MX and even R1 footage, although it's tuned for the specifics of Dragon, that doesn't mean that it doesn't work on older footage.

Graeme

Nice to hear, but I'm thinking more of... are there benefits to using DC2 over RC2 with the MX sensor? Or is it better to use RC2 on MX because it's more fine tuned to that sensor?

Nice.

Did you know you could bypass the export step by opening an r3d snapshot in photoshop?

I guess this this you you do get the benefits of ADD but just thought I'd mention it as analternate workflow.

"re there benefits to using DC2 over RC2 with the MX sensor?" - yes benefits. On any of our sensors DC2 or RC4 will be best. For older sensors RC4, for newer DC2, but even then I'd prefer DC2 to older colour spaces on any sensor.

Here's a really stunning (to me) example of how DC2 does so much more than DC:

In particular, the blue shadow lights (barely registering as blue in DC) now show up as over-saturated, just as my Panasonic GH4 sees it. Which means that I can desaturate the shadow light and get much better agreement between my large and small cameras. It also makes the wood in the studio look alive, which is how it is in real life. Thanks!

Thanks Micheal for your R3D,

A strange thing I can see with the denoise and the sharpening tool (wich wasn't so apparent in my memory) is how the introduce artefacts.
Here a 250% snapshot of the strange effect.

1) With the denoise the blue stips from the shirt are gone.
2) Usually there are some strange artefacts in the high contrast or highlights when using sharpening but here ther are some on the strings.

See you.

Pat

PS : I miss the RG3 in the new RCX Beta build 33.35971

Patrick,

I'm sure there's a Swiss equivalent to the America aphorism "The patient complains 'Doc, it only hurts when I do this.' The doctor replies 'Then don't do it!'"

So I don't sharpen or denoise when 6K and D.E.B. does all I really need.
