  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DRAGONolor2 and REDcolor4 Beta and the H20 underwater OLPF

Isn't Dragoncolor only for the Epic Dragon? Does it really improve the MX as well?

DC2 works on MX and even R1 footage, although it's tuned for the specifics of Dragon, that doesn't mean that it doesn't work on older footage.

So, does DC2 simply make shooting ETTR aimed at RLF moot? I don't see how I could get the footage any better in post using RLF than I could using DC2 right out of the camera. This makes owning a Broadcast Module much more appealing.

RedlogFilm is a gamma curve. Dragoncolor is a color matrix. They are two different things, meant to be used together.

Thanks for the clarification.

Graeme, would you say that red color 4 reacts better with mx than DC2 would. My assumption would be that it does, but clarification is always nice

What amazes me is when I dig out some old files from a shoot I did 7 years ago on Redone, the pictures now look so so much better than when we first processed them back in 2007, Amazing how good the redone 1 sensor was so long ago. Pity we didn't have dragon colour way back then Hahahahaha

When I first open a R3D file in the new beta version of RCX, Red Color 4 is in the menu with all the other options. But after I select Red Color and open the menu again to go back, all the other Red Color options are no longer there or available. Rec 709 and the other are still available.

DC2 has a very nice bump in color saturation on my Dragon. Beautiful overall. Toggling between DC1 and 2 and it's obvious.

So far DC2 is looking best on old mx footage compared to rc4. But rc4 looks pretty damn nice too

Great to see some samples Phil, since it's the holidays and I've parked the Dragon in his cave for a few days.
Can't wait to play with this Xmas gift. We have tons of footage from last winter that is not "used" yet as we just finished season one of our show. Can't wait to start looking at season 2 footage with new (DC2) eyes

Graeme,

Here's a fun little torture test for DC2 vs. RC4 vs. DC:

Here's DC (left) vs. DC2 (right):

Key and fill lighting comes from ARRI L7-C fixtures. Background and shadow lighting comes from ETC SourceFour LED and D-40 LED lamps (set to Hue=240, i.e., blue). I have found LED light sources to be a real challenge. DC seems to agree more with RC2. DC2 seems to agree mostly with RC4. But RC4 also saturates the red sweater more than DC2. Play around with the R3D file and you'll see just how wildly different the color interpretation can be. Have fun, and do let me know if you learn anything interesting.

I should add that changing color temperature also really changes the interpretation of the blue wash behind the singer: at 2700K it's a thick, gooey blue and at 5600K it's a vague, violety blue.

From these test images seeing some nice differences! Look forward to testing out RC4 on our Epic MX.

Am I correct in thinking the changable OLPF is Dragon only? The Low light is one I have wanted for a while.

Merry Christmas all, hope you had a great day!

are people still having issues with the apple FCPx plugin?

Im guessing that it is not an option on MX. You can enable it though in post.
