  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon w/New OLPF issue? (Addressed by Red)

I assume you shot this at T16 or above? In doing so you are creating a pinhole laser beam which reflects backwards and forwards off the OPLF and back of the iris blades when you point it straight at the sun. This pattern has been evident since original M chip and is not going to change with the OPLF design.

Simple fix is to use ND and open up the iris.

Issue identified and resolved by RED. Thank you!!

To to your point which might relate to older OLPF's: I reproduced the red dot issue at sunrise this morning on the 100mm Cron. It has little to do with iris. Opening it up just lightens up the effect but it's still there at T8. Also has nothing to do with cost of lens as has been suggested since a single Summicron-C costs as much as the average new car ;-)

Other than a single specific low angle sunrise / sunset light blast to sensor scenario, the Dragon has been an amazing image producing beast over the last week plus. Also loving my new RED Bricks with that cool dual charger . . . to keep that all day groove going on. All good!!

Thanks guys! Would love to shoot up to Parker today or Monday to git 'er done by the folks in lab coats - I'd probably drop a ham sandwich in there if I tried to do it myself ;-)

I'm keeping the Dragon real busy . . . loving the images!! A-FN-mazing

Word for the day: "Poka-Yoke"

Zeb, shoot an email to Nick Grow and he will sort you today or Monday.

Jarred, is it normal to have this issue on the Epic X or is it also because the glass is flipped?
I have seen this pattern a few times, not a huge problem, but better without it of course.
Cheers

Hey guys, remember that time when you posted a tech support issue on Any_Other_Camera_Manufacturer's website and got a response, let alone one from both the President and Global Brand Manager?

No? Neither do I.

This truly is one of the amazing things about Red.

Love this quote. Super well said.

Where will we find the instructions to test our dragons?

OK, quick update.

When we do this OLPF flip in-house, we have the luxury of clean rooms, custom jigs, and specialized tools. Plus a staff handling camera repair on a daily basis. Not exactly something you can easily replicate in your workshop : )

So, our production team, ME's and repair teams are working on two things. The first thing is creating a process you guys can use to perform this with minimal risk of damaging something or inducing debris. All assuming you don't have a clean room in your basement, ha. So, they are testing various methods and off-the-shelf tools to see what works best.

The second thing is once that process and tool kit is mapped out, our tech writing team will create the end-user work instructions.

We will go as quickly as we can to make these available to you - but we want to make sure we give you the best resources to do the job.

Meanwhile, like Jarred said, if you happen to be shouting distance from one of our service centers and need this done quickly, that is your best bet. Depending on volume, if you drop off in AM, should be done by COB that day.

Same here, thought the red dot issue was tested to be fixed.

The red dots happen when you shot into the sun on certain angles . Interesting I thought it might've disappeared with the new sensor.

"We know exactly what some users are seeing it."

Please, tell us why.

Just heard from Graeme that RED is on top of this.

So I guess we can all relax a bit...

HA! It's that simple?

Don't worry all... if you are seeing this on your camera it is because the OLPF is upside down, you can flip it yourselves or get us to do it ( don't mind the tamper tape, your warranty is still good without it, just be careful not to scratch the glass )

Looks like the safety packaging for our OLPF glass suddenly changed without notice and we blindly botched the process and flipped it on some cameras. Quite embarrassing....

Zeb B you should post "issue fixed in this post" on the first post of this tread. So people don't freak out (to much) ;-).

My plan exactly. Yesterday at home I set up a scene at a specific time of day that is repeatable and is the worst case scenario. I'll shoot it 24hrs apart if the weather holds.

That said (with my little experience with this issue) it seems that unless you're shooting without a matte box to flag off the sun hitting the lens, or at a narrow range of angles into the sun, with a closed down iris of at least T8 . . . you won't see the red dots (although at lower T settings the flare will still be there - it will not be as red in color - don't believe me? . . . crank up the shutter speed to way fast - it's there at T5.6). Even if they are there you can rotate the POV slightly sometimes to defeat the issue. My OP image is as bad as it gets and seems to be the G-spot of conditions for this issue.

All that said . . . I would much rather they not be there under any condition since they are very distinct and noticeable and therefore a creative choice "look". That's why I'm heading up to Parker Monday AM to flip da bitch

This is exactly why I'm a happy RED customer. No BS, real answers, and no excuses. Thanks RED for being you.

Please tell us why this was posted on facebook and not reduser?

It wasn't.... It was posted here and so I asked in the Red DSMC facebook group which Graeme is a member of and he responded instantly. Then the response was updated here on Reduser when I told him about the thread. Not a big deal and they were quick to respond...
