  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon w/New OLPF issue? (Addressed by Red)

Well, it would be interesting to know what Red know :)

ie "...we know exactly why some users are seeing it"

Guess we'll wait and see.

I thought I had read that Alexa's OLPF was bonded to, or integral to the sensor. That would presumably prevent this from happening at least so far as the OLPF is concerned.

This was shot a few weeks ago with an old zoom (Angenieux 25-250mm T3.9) - Dragon + OLD OLPF (so not new).

The OLPF flare was still there, as you can see. I have no idea if the new OLPF fixes the issue.

With all due respect for Jeff and yourself, I have tested both cameras specifically for this issue 2 years ago and could not replicate it on the Alexa . Neither have I seen it on F5/55/65.

Um… OK, but I can still replicate it on an Alexa and have done so. It's not pink -- more teal and gold. It is more subdued and that has more to do with the low-con filtration layer in the Alexa sensor path than anything else. And, believe it or not, the larger photo sites also help mask the issue, or you don't see it the same way. You're going to get this sort of reflection on *ANY* digital camera system where you have a reflective imager surface (CMOS sensor) and other conditions are right. You'll see it more with with 'longer' focal lengths. Stop down past F11~16 and shoot intense sun or other light into the lens at an angle which could cause light to reflect back off the sensor. Whether the OLPF exists or not, the light just has to bounce back and forth internally. Even between the sensor and the rear element of your lens.

As for the new OLPF, it fixes IR flare and localized blooming from the OLPF surface itself. Different issue. I haven't got my hands on a Dragon with the new OLPF to test...

Don't worry all... if you are seeing this on your camera it is because the OLPF is upside down, you can flip it yourselves or get us to do it ( don't mind the tamper tape, your warranty is still good without it, just be careful not to scratch the glass )

Looks like the safety packaging for our OLPF glass suddenly changed without notice and we blindly botched the process and flipped it on some cameras. Quite embarrassing....

But a good outcome... if anyone really wants to keep the red spotty madness, they know what to do now. LOL

Had to ask this - will the same fix work on the old MX OLPF? Presume it won't, but just interested :)

Heh heh thanks for the laugh... I needed it. Easy for me to get angry/frustrated/depressed when we screw the pooch and muck up like this.

Is there any easy way to tell if it's flipped?

We will put together a little document to explain what to check for and the process.

Jarred, thanks for the transparency and honesty. Our camera is due soon for the OLPF update. Looking forward to it!

Guys, quick update. We are putting together a document that will illustrate clearly how to check to see if your OLPF is properly installed. It will also show you how to "flip" the OLPF to proper factory specifications, if needed.

Also, we have made some advancements in the whole OLPF mounting since the M-X days. This document will show you how to remove, flip, and re-install without even having to touch the tamper stickers.

And, if for some reason, you do not want to do this on your own, we will of course do it at no charge for you. We will cover shipping to and from as well. It is the least we can do....

Hey guys, remember that time when you posted a tech support issue on Any_Other_Camera_Manufacturer's website and got a response, let alone one from both the President and Global Brand Manager?

No? Neither do I.

... i am shooting into the sun a lot - running around Berlin all day long with a canon mounted dragon glued to my body ....
(courtesy of Mr. Ellington, thank you, Sir)

... the only "glass" i have this effect on is the cheapest canon 50 mm (50 bucks or so on amazon) ....

then, i happen to like it (a lot) and put it on for effect ... no showing with other lenses, ...

looking to get some relevant screenshots here ... stay tuned ... :-)

Note:
camera has the old OLPF.

Correction:
... looking quickly through some footage, found it in a softer version on a 17-40 shot

But again, at this point I still blame it on the operator and look & deal with them as lens flare elements (composition wise)

... ;-)

And if you are close to one of our repair centers, you can just pop in with your camera and have one of our guys do it as well. Takes about 15 minutes and you are back on your way.

so could it be possible to do the original install of the new OLPF ourself?

No, because there's much more to the OLPF upgrade than just the glass. The sensor has to be re-configured to work properly with the new glass and the firmware needs to be informed of the new camera configuration. Without going into the nitty-gritty of it all, it's not a user install option.

Thanks guys! Would love to shoot up to Parker today or Monday to git 'er done by the folks in lab coats - I'd probably drop a ham sandwich in there if I tried to do it myself ;-)

I'm keeping the Dragon real busy . . . loving the images!! A-FN-mazing
