  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon upgrades

Your current mount will work on Weapon when you are using S35 and full frame lenses.

Now u kinda said the magic words... Fuck. I thought I'd be forever happy with the Epic...

And I dunno what the potential xfer wise is for the minimags, but I know how much I dig 2:1 compression...

Oooha! I am not going to pester you about what
that implies, but it sure sounds right.

Thanks a ton for opening up the Scarlet path. Love it!

You will be sending in your Dragon mini mag module to be upgraded to the Weapon mini mag module... if you choose the upgrade path.

So does that mean if we are currently on 1.8" there is no reason to buy a minimag side module now (It will just cost more to upgrade it later)?

I'm actually emailing my bomb rep right now about that, odds are he doesn't know until we know. But I'm ready to drop some cash now to get ready for weapon or even possibility save some money on the upgrade in the long run. I would asume the new mini mag module will be part of the upgrade fee. But could be lower if you already own the mini mag module. Since it could be considered a trade in.

I just have to keep reminding myself that the Epic MX that is sitting right beside me is an incredible piece of equipment and that won't change, despite there being a new Weapon on the horizon.

I couldn't sleep at all last night. As I kept pressing "refresh" on this thread since Jarred was awake with the rest us us night-owls, I was looking around my studio trying to see if there were things in my arsenal that I could sell, just so I could afford the dragon upgrade in time. And I could probably make it happen. But then I sat down and looked at some of the stuff that I've shot with my epic and realized that though I REALLY would love to make this happen, if I can't, I will still have this great tool right beside me. So I undoubtedly felt like a little boy trying to get the new version of a toy he loves, despite the one he owns is still awesome and kicks all sorts of ass. It's so enticing when the toy seems like it close enough to reach, but the reality is that for many of us it won't be... and that's ok.

I do love the opportunity. Without the upgrade path, I probably wouldn't crave it as much, but that's ok too, pushes me to work harder. I can always sell my epic and get the new toy when the time is right, sure the upgrade path makes that whole process much easier (and affordable even), but if someone offers me a private jet for $10,000, and I only have $1,000, even if it's the deal of the century, I probably shouldn't be buying a jet. C'est la vie.

Jarred and the rest of the RED team, thank you for offering us these opportunities to dream and helping us "set out souls on fire". At the end of the day, many of us will still tell our stories one way or another. You are just offering us great tools to make that happen.

So in the mean time. Will I need more or less pieces of Lego to make a replica of this? Heheheh

You'll probably just have to determine based off past upgrades what the cheapest route will be for you.

There was some sort of discussion about a high-speed RED camera costing around $50k new.

Jarred said that anyone who buys a Dragon on the first day of NAB2015 or later will have increased costs for going Dragon to Weapon.

Therefore, the upgrade for being loyal + having a Dragon before NAB2015 will probably be something like $30k if that $50k talk was right.

Upgrading has, generally, put people over the final retail price of the new body. Think about having an Epic-X MX at $17,500, then upgrading to the Dragon sensor for $9500 -- $27k for a $24k camera to keep your same body instead of dealing with having to sell your Epic-X MX used and wait to buy a new Dragon.

We can argue about how there's value in keeping the same body, how it should pay for itself and the value is much lower after you've owned it. I'm just pointing out that traditionally, this has been what's come of upgrade paths. Those who have put their cameras to work can afford to lose a few grand upfront, then be at the bleeding edge of tech + sell their clients on that.

And for the record - I'm not complaining about the option to upgrade. That's what it is: a choice for owners to stick with the company and their developments.

Well if you missed the boat(like I did, and I assume you did to) in upgrading to Dragon Sensor by December, now it's $3000 more... so the jump is now 22k to the Epic Dragon from the 19k original price... so I guess you have to wonder if you should upgrade...

I imagine the new upgrade isn't going to be to the sensor, but maybe it is? ...and maybe a few MX guys can make the jump?

Jarred.

Any hint on how much this upgrade is going to cost?

Just so we can all start planning. :)

Seem's to be a slow mo year!

I just hope that's gonna be really ready for upgrade and not a 2 years waiting upgrade..... I'm still waiting for the DYT KIT (no one kit in europe...)

I have to confess I am not a Red fanboy. I will happily prostitute myself to any camera that will give me what I need. We have been looking at the Alexa recently but with improved specs and a new body I'm feeling REDDISH right now.

I think RED does a good job.... have only one request.... will we be able to buy a brand new Red Weapon fairly quickly without upgrading our Dragon?

I bet it will be a fast upgrade. They have the upgrade line built already.

I guess I better start collecting medium format glass before the prices spike.

Before Red One you could get a full set of Zeiss standard primes for $9000 after Red One they now go for $20000

Very cool Jarred. Thank you.

I am sure you have looked into it. But is there a reason why you can't offer a CFast Card option?

After years of throwing expensive media away from Sony and Panasonic and even Red... I am sure that I am not alone in wishing camera manufacturers could all agree on a single standard moving forward.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up, and thanks for the upgrade option. (Which to me is crazy as I am already so happy with the current Dragon!)

I was almost positive this camera was FF35 but now I'm thinking Medium Format.

Pentax and Leica both have video on their medium format cameras.

Hrmmmmmm
And don't forget Jarred's "Hehehe" in the Alexa 65 thread earlier this year. ;)
