Dragon Update

Same difference.. pretty much everything gets swapped out mechanically so the cost to upgrade a M and an X would be similar.

It would be an expensive upgrade, but I can see how some of you may consider the option. Let me get with Brent on Monday and run some numbers.

The amount of flexibility from RED continues to truly amaze!!

Now... If only I would have thought of asking this 3 months ago... ;)

Would upgrades mess with the new serial numbers as CF's started over from 0.

Just to be clear, and I'm sorry if this has been answered already, are Epic M dragon upgrades done by the upgrade order time and date (starting last April) or by original delivery/serial number of the M cameras? Here's hoping it's not the latter, I got one of the late Ms.

Fair enough;-)

and cards? Like the old red drive trade in program?

There wont be an upgrade program for current REDMAG cards to Mini-Mags.. the Mini-mags are a completely optional product and are not a requirement at all for either Dragon or Epic-X. The only exception is that Carbon Dragon owners will be able to trade in their Carbon side SSD that ships with their cameras before christmas to the Carbon Mini-mag side module that comes out in the new year for no charge, if they want. Once we start selling the Carbon Side Mini-Mag side modules though, that trade in offer will end.

Makes sense..

How about an adapter to allow new fast mags to slip into the old side module (albeit with slower performance)?

My (and I assume many others) situation is:

1: I will rush to buy faster mags to go with my soon to come Dragon cameras. Essential to getting low compression rates at HS
2: I will have a other jobs and cameras that don't need to speed all the time... And old mags and side modules spare
3: I want to find the least wasteful way to have everything..;-)

So either new tek in old form factor (I accept it wont happen) OR new tek slipping into old slots (via adapter) seems easiest from my POV.

Maybe a trade in program for guys like me to get rid of old side modules and cards? Like the old red drive trade in program?

Thanks for responding!

Hi jarred,

excellent! Will the new Mini mags, which RED obviously holds very dear have a >90 day warranty? Also, is there a price point to the CF Mini/Reg SSD?

Thank you very much

Carbons take priority and the orders keep coming in for them so the majority are Carbons.. but there are upgrades happening at the same time when we can fit them in.

Jarred that reads as if upgrades are being pushed back every time a carbon order comes in. That's a bummer for those who ordered and budgeted for the upgrades back in April.
I thought Carbons were a totally different production line to upgrades - at least that was the company line a couple of weeks ago.
It also sounds like the very few upgrades have gone out have not much to do with the order of time stamps. You've left everyone with no real idea of when they'll get their upgrades, as far as I can see.

I'm digging the Carbon upgrade concept too. It would be good to have a package with or without the Magnesium PL Mount or perhaps as a separate purchase.

Today you have probably converted some of those, " I can't believe my EPIC has not been upgraded." To, "I'm so glad it hasn't been upgraded yet, and now I have the option of a CF upgrade:)

For those that are receiving CF Dragons prior to Christmas, can there be a third option of exercising the SSD module option for the mini-module, then giving the owners an option of buying the SSD module intead of it going to battle tested or such?

Yes Phil -as far as I know there's no Magnesium Motion Mount...and I just took delivery on two PL Motion Mounts for my M's.

They are on a separate line.. I assumed people would understand that a Carbon Fiber and Magnesium Dragon can't possibly come from the same lines that pump out Aluminum Dragons.. maybe I assumed too much and some people don't understand that. Let me break it down for you Mark:

Carbon Fiber is a composite material made up of woven fibers and a Polymer ( i.e glue ) . That process involves molds, ovens and some extremely talented craftsmen.

Aluminum is a metal that is machined or cast, in Irvine we machine Aluminum using large 5 axis cnc machines, with again some extremely talented craftsmen called machinist.

The Magnesium parts go through a process very similar to Aluminum, being machined in Irvine. But Magnesium is very different from Aluminum, it is very very flammable, and hence requires different machines than the Aluminum mills with C02 blasts and suppressants and different coolants to avoid blowing the entire building up.

Hope that clears things up.. and explains why they are on separate lines.

But regardless, as we sit now upgrades are dependent on sensors that sit on "upgradable" sensor boards. and they are going out as fast as they come in since the larger batches started coming in last week on the 2nd. You have seen a handful of people here posting about getting their upgrades, there are many more out there that don't engage in posting. The machine is going....

And yes, Carbons take priority of everything.. Just like Epic-M cameras did when Epic came out. Guys getting Carbons will be a little less offensive to people that are waiting when the sensor yield increases and those weekly batches get bigger and bigger.. I know the wait is painful.
