Dragon Update

Thinking about adding an Epic X M-X, is that a good idea seeing that you'll be releasing an Epic X Dragon? I know one can always upgrade from the M-X, but i'm really wondering about the price of a new Epic X Dragon.

Thank you very much

Thank you for the answer, i was just eating dinner with the wife and discussing the very same thing. We both guessed around 24k. The ultimate question is should i wait or....

Thank you for the info. Looking forward to the upgrade :-)

It's a bit funny how these info threads always gets party pooped and a hundred pages long with people debating and complaining about their place in line and what's been said and not.
I would much more like to just read about product info and suggestions from RED and fellow redusers.
RED team is doing a hell of a job on their products which are ready when they are ready. I think everyone should be happy to be on board or just step of the train at the next station ;-)

Hi Roshdi,

With respect, the ultimate question, as regards the Dragon purchase, is the exit strategy. This required sanalyses of; use(s), cap cost, income sources, upgrade pathways, warranty (extended), etc. Not to mention possibly selling it at some point. The solution would be Waaaay easier, if a date certain or even fairly certain, for shipping of all variants were avail;able...

Thank you very much

Really looking forward to using HDRX on Dragon for pulling clean stills. Gotta love 16 stops of DR. On most shoots I keep everything I care about in a 10 stop window anyway, so getting to a 1/200th of a second shutter (or even 1/400th) on the X track without underexposing should be viable most of the time- bye bye motion blur...

Cheers - #19

The new DSMC 2.0 Fan Kit (top and bottom) is included with new Carbon Epic Dragons and new Epic-M Dragons.

It's been officially answered a few times, but the new fans are not included as part of the upgrade path.

Top/fan kits come with all EPIC-M new DRAGON cameras (standard or carbon fiber) and all DRAGON EPIC sensor upgrades (X or M brains): https://support.red.com/entries/23769427-What-does-the-EPIC-RED-DRAGON-upgrade-include-

If you already have them: https://support.red.com/entries/274...-0-UPGRADE-KIT-before-the-RED-DRAGON-upgrade-

Yes, you are right. Maybe RED can post the expected price for the Epic X Dragon since the Epic M is up on the store with the "Coming Soon" banner. There are many of us who are upgrading the whole infrastructure to accommodate this, i'm one of them :)

Thanks Jarred...go Dragon Go.

Apologies if this has already been asked as I did not read the whole thread, but,

Jared, any chance we will be seeing more BT Scarlets once the trade ins are done? If so, any ball park estimate on price and availability?T

Thanks!

The Red laser projector was based on an lcos modulator, not a direct laser raster.

RED never said what it was based on and it may not be LCOS. OTOH, you're right that it definitely wasn't a direct-scanning laser.

The laser was used as the light source only. There are no 8k lcos devices now.
Do you think that the design has changed ? It's possible, as the first theater laser projector in the field has obtained a waiver from the rules prohibiting direct laser rasters shot at the screen.
The direct raster would make ultra high contrast ratios possible. Lcos, not so much, As seen at the NAB demo with it's milky blacks.

I guess what my point was is that the projector was to be able to display simultaneous 4K stereo images. Depending on how the light is rasterized and transferred to the screen, it may be possible to offset the pixel orientation between the two images. More than likely, you're correct in that it is/ was LCOS and it achieved the simultaneous stereo image simply by simultaneously passing two different wavelengths of alternately polarized light through the same LCOS cell, or bouncing it off the same DMD / DLP element if it were using a DLP design.

Not that I should be advocating for such an approach to 8K. Pixel-shifting isn't all that desirable as we saw in the early days of HD… Isn't really any better, sometimes even worse, than "wobulating" the image. Ugh.

I don't expect to see a direct-scanning laser projector heading to home theatre installations. Probably ever. The concern that someone could just walk in the path of the projected image and look into the light would be enough of a concern to not allow it.

Anyway, back to Dragon...

HDR-X is a great thing to keep with the Dragon. To be able to shoot high paced action at 800 ISO and then being able push the X track to 2000 ISO to pull very clean stills is a huge advantage over other cameras.

But the good news is, Dec 1, like Jarred said, the faucet gets turned on more than a trickle : )

oh sweet music to my ears!

is there any way of know what number in the queue will be out in the wild by Dec. 1 when the faucet turns on.

highly curious, like everyone else....

are Rocket-Xs going out before, during, or after camera upgrades, as a general rule? after Dec. 1, I mean.

Yes, that falls in line with priority queue being primary sort then date/time stamp being secondary. Of course, people always had option to go SCARLET > EPIC M-X > EPIC DRAGON instead of just SCARLET > EPIC DRAGON path.

I am sorry but I don't follow here. I don't feel this was ever fully explained out. If I would have known that I could have upgraded to Epic and then upgrade to Dragon and still be ahead of my initial Scarlet to Epic Dragon place than I would have. I don't think this was really fully explained. Not to mention I put aside my 18K with the understanding that these were going to be released this summer while everyone else put up 9 K and have had fun with their Epics all summer and now can still get their Dragons before me? O well, guess the joke was on me...:(

+1 on short ultra high speed bursts :)

Great work Jared and RED Team.
While you still have the dragons unleased, one thing I really wish for you guys to look into is high speed bursts.
If there is any way possible to shoot even just for a second of duration really high framerates at FF. I do know nothing about the build of these cameras but I'm guessing that you have a ram buffer in between the SSD and the sensor, so basically if that could be filled really quickly and then when filled up copied over to the SSD.

Reason for asking is that we are developing a super fast motion control rig that is totally dedicated to the epic. i.e weight constrains make it not suitable for Phantom 4k or such and getting high speed busts into the mix would be a killer....

Epic > Dragon upgrade includes Fan 2.0? I swear I thought I heard otherwise...

BTW, thanks for including the fan 2.0 upgrade kit in the price of the Dragon.
I hope that, as an Epic M owner who ordered on the first day, that Xmas might be exciting.
