Dragon Update

Same here, saw the same one on and working. The funny thing is that I didn't really think much of it, because I kind of assumed there were already a few floating around in the wild. I forgot that we haven't seen any footage or demo units. So, Jarred showed me and kinda went "heeeere it is!" and I was just like "oh yeah, cool man." I only realize now the significance of that moment, haha.

face:palm

Anyway, I guess it's time to blow the dust off my checkbook...

Pic or it didn't happen ;)
+1
But video, instead of pic would be nicer.
Side-by-side video of EPIC MX vs EPIC Dragon would be even nicer.

Looking forward to Epic Dragon! Thank you Jim & Jarred. :hurray:

I know the warranty on the Dragon is 90 days but what is the warranty on the Epic upgrade???

As has already been said it's vital the Red get this launch right, it's far better that it's delayed slightly and it's right than that they get it out early.

I've been running workshops and testing all across Australia, Singapore and now New Zealand, the results are pretty clear that whilst the Epic was a market leader it's not any longer.

However, before you all scream at me. it was here long before all the other cameras in the tests and so it's not a problem, what is needed now is a clear leap past the F65, F55, C500 and even Alexa.

Dragon promises this and I can't wait to test it.

I expect it to force the other manufacturers to scurry to catch up.

Thanks Jim for kicking the business up the arse!

Im curious what everyone would want to see in the Dragon that they feel would put it above the F65/F55 and Alexa? Just resolution?

Dynamic range more than anything.

Exactly. 6K RAW files will lead the industry, but more impressively...Dragon's dynamic range (hopefully) will as well. This would make the Dragon, in a tiny package, the most powerful camera in the world...(and could remain so for quite a while).

Add in the new streamlined workflow (Proxy recorder, etc)...and Dragon is poised to melt faces.

in order of personal preference:
1. Dynamic Range
2. Color rendition (out of the box pre color)
3. Better highlight rolloff
4. Better noise control (should be noise free at 2000ISO, current 800ISO is too noisy compared to competing systems)
5. Better handling of tungsten lighting (blue channel improvements)
6. Improved visual sharpness of images (images never look sharp at 100%)
7. Improved and solid user interface with rock solid firmware
8. Lastly resolution increase

I already love the cam as is. This is just my opinion if RED wants to reclaim the lead over the new competition.

Pretty good list. I think the sharpness is inherent in shooting RAW with no sharpening applied, but I understand what you mean. I can't wait to see what 1080p deliverables look like after they've been downsampled from 6K!!! Can you imagine? Im hoping they look like MONOCHROME....in color.

Speaking of, can you IMAGINE what Monochrome Dragon will look like? What will THAT native ISO be??!!

haha it will be insane on Monochrome.

When I said sharpness I should have explained properly. While I do mean better visual sharpness out of the box I also meant it for lower resolutions shots as well. When you drop from say 5k to shooting 4k high speed, or 3k high speed, the apparent sharpness drops with each resolution decrease. I just wished there was a way for them to be captured sharper if that makes sense. Obviously your dropping resolution, but 3K should look sharper than 1080p acquired material and that is not the case currently. Hope I explained that properly haha

nobody has seen any clips as of right now? so we have to be at least a month, probably more like a couple off? or will the release date of the camera come at the same time as the first official files? i am just as excited as everybody else here but i will have to see all the promised improvements and i am really looking forward to that....i just can't imagine first samples coming out and the camera shipping/upgrades starting the week after....
the dragon jpeg looked great and all but it really did not say that much either (other then resolution), not sure why nothing gets released if THE date is getting close....

Paul--there are people lining up for the upgrade no matter what it looks like. I understand the philosophy of releasing footage and starting upgrades immediately: to get people talking. Get footage and cameras out into the world and attract attention.

As camera owners we are the stakeholders in this--what Red wants, we want. I think we all want a sudden flurry of interest in the new camera. That includes independent users posting footage soon after the release.

Still loving my Epic my friends......

I can promise you Jim and Jarred and the whole gang are working their asses off making Dragon perfect. If only I hadn't knocked the camera over when I was there.....
