  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

Or is there some technical limitation to this that I'm not considering? I mean besides read/reset speeds (which I assume are at least somewhat subject to Moore's Law).

The data throughput to start with. Can you imagine what 12K 645 sensor would produce (especially given its aspect ratio)? You are talking 6x Dragon in something like that...
We would need to wait for a while for more's law to catch up with media and ASICs. But yes, eventually we will arrive there. I am still quietly praying for the 617 Epic...

Oh, I know it won't be easy. The data amount would be staggering. That's why I talked about "a future" :)

But, given that a 9K 645 sensor was on the original plan, I can't imagine a group as smart as RED hasn't at least thrown the idea out - and yes, I know 12K is 66% more pixels than 9K at the same aspect ratio, but again - Moore's Law.

Hmmm..Did I make the right choice? What happens now? Do I pull out the big cigar now that I'm an EPIC owner or is that hype over? I guess I'm just another EPIC owner because the Dragon has pretty much killed that vibe. Doesn't really matter because I finally own the camera I dreamed of to do the job I need if I'm too late in the game. One thing for sure you guys can help me with the ends and outs of my camera if I run into issues =) I feel for the guys that fell for all that sony 4K jazz that needs a firmware upgrade to turn it on.

Jarred. I think after all these inventions and update it is time to go to basics and make a very cool RED COFFEE MUG! you know, that's the first thing we used when we wake up before go out and shoot!

as long as the enclosure is long enough it will work, remember the Rocket-X is a full length card.

But its going to be slow. Thunderbolt 1 cripples the existing Rocket... and the Rocket X is many times faster. Thunderbolt 2 will be faster, but not as fast as the card.

I use the current Red Rocket in a Sonnet TB expansion chassis on a daily basis. There is no bottleneck at all and it certainly does not "cripple" the Red Rocket.

In fact, I even tested the same Red Rocket inside my Mac Pro, thinking that a x16 lane would improve transcoding speed... it didn't. I get the same real-time speeds in the tower as in the external chassis.

So if the upcoming RRX is 5x faster, then I imagine that TB 1.0 will bottleneck it to an extent, but not TB 2.0.

...speaking of which, any word yet on the release date of the RRX?

Hey Justin, Sorry, but you are wrong.. Current Thunderbolt is only capable of 4X speeds , even if you ignore the overhead. Doesn't matter if the chassis puts the card in a 8x slot.. its still running at 4X. The current rocket is not going to run at full speed in a TB1 external chassis Sorry.

But your punch line is kinda correct... if you stated the exact opposite of what you said. Everything except transcoding you might not see a big difference ( i.e. using the Rocket in an enclosure for real time playback on a 24fps timeline ) .. and TB2 will likely allow that same realtime playback in 5K. Transcoding speed however is much different story.

Whatever the case may be.. TB2 is definitely better than TB1 :)

Jarred...

is it possible to bridge pcie lanes from multiple TB2 connectors to give the red rocket x the bandwidth it deserves?
if not we would be stuck with the old mac pro for transcoding...

I'm getting faster than realtime transcodes with my Red Rocket 1 with Sonnet... What am I missing here?

Sergio, wouldn't you like 5x realtime? ;)
With TB2 we probably are stuck with 2x realtime on the RR-X.
It's not bad of course but it's not its full potential...and if you have tons of footage and/or a 3D production on hand...

I am crossing my fingers that someone will figure that out.. I asked the same question yesterday. If that happens, then we are golden.....

Theoretically it is possible. Both Jeff and I think that "someone" could be RED. Transform the RRX from a PCIe card to a compact external self-contained box that would connect via 2x TB2s and feature the slots for REDMAGs and REDMAG MINIs...

Howl if you need a help... :reddevil:

Hey jarred will you guys ever open up to allowing us the option to record raw footage to an external drive via usb connection? not pro res but the same footage that's going to the SD cards ,Raw footage and use the SD cards for backup?

Whatever happen to the different color red cameras that you posted last year after the scarlet was released?

Agreed! now apple moved to thunderbolt only, i think a self contained box/card reader would be golden! If the price is right (somehwere around ($2500) a lot of people will buy it

First of all the only SD card slot is on the RED ONE (EOL) and it is used for profiles and log reporting.
None of the DSMC cameras have SD slot or USB for that matter.
RED is using high-performance SSD (Solid State Drives) to capture the RAW data. These are essentially high-performance equivalents of your "USB drives". These are needed as USB drives will not have enough performance (and reliability) to capture the RAW data.
When it comes to relationship between SSDs and HDDs - it is the HDDs that are used as a backup for data captured on SSDs, not the other way round.
The DSMC cameras do feature a GbE port, but even this with a bottleneck of 100 MB/s is not fast enough for capture of the RAW stream...

+1 for multiple TB but also we need external gpus in OSX to function...cuz then we can use external gpus in any system (think MBA with external cuda and rocket form factor), which would defeat much of the reason many of us feel we need internal pci slots to begin with, right? since then we can use anything we want externally, cuda and whatever we need/own already to use in our ecosystems of post.

Great idea but I respectfully disagree that RED should tackle this. My reasoning is that RED has a roadmap with trained personnel assigned, (I'm assuming) and they probably can't just take people away from projects they may feel will be beneficial to the largest number of customers to work on something that could benefit a segment of the customer base, no matter how good the idea.

I believe RED has become big enough now that they can't just act on brainstorms. That probably doesn't mean they can't turn on a dime if they see a better way of doing something already in the pipeline... but I'm guessing things have to enter the closed-wall pipe in a more distant place than like before when the pipe had more holes in it than a perforated sewer drain pipe and allowed good ideas to enter and get worked on immediately.
