  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update

Yeah me too. But no, that is not the "proper" way to do things.

Then again, who wants to be proper.

Hmm.

Never mind. Bjorn be quiet. you are a horrible influence :)

Björn is just saying that because he was the first to get in line for the upgrade.

Thanks for the update. If it took a year to make it perfect, that would be fine. Epic is gorgeous and Dragon will be even more so.

Does anyone know.. (and apologies if its been asked before) whether I can send the Scarlet into Red Europe for either the Dragon upgrade or Epic swap?

Regards

Simon

As having been amongst the 1st on both the R1 and the Epic M, I can say: That isn't neccesarily true.

Hahahaha

I'd have taken an unfinnished Dragon any day.
Even despite not having put myself in line formally yet.

Jarred:

Great news! Hopefully we see a video of these tests?

For those of us who are planning to upgrade to an Epic-D in two steps (1. Scarlet-X to an Epic-X and eventually 2. Epic-X to Epic-D) I was wondering why we can't do the first step as of yet, given the fact that there shouldn't be a shortage of Epic-X's, correct? I say this so people in my position can enjoy the benefits of Epic-X now while we wait save up and drool over Dragon.

It is probably about time for an update.

Dragon is coming along well.. Graeme is working his magic and getting some incredible new color science buttoned up for when we are ready. REDCINE-X with Dragon support is ready. The Dragon camera firmware is complete. The Sensors and ASICs are performing like champs, its all down to the bottom end noise that was found in the power supplies, which have been redesigned and we should see those come in from manufacturing in a couple weeks.

The slice of production line is back from NAB and we are stocking up on all the mechanicals, sensors and ASICs so we can hit the ground running to do the upgrades when everything comes together.

I know everyone is eager and waiting.. thank you for your patience.

We have been doing lens coverage test on the Dragon while we are waiting.. and lens coverage is surprisingly good so far.. Hopefully I can grab Brook Evin and Phil one of these days soon with a van full of glass so they can put together some sort of master Dragon-Lens-matrix. The specs and assumptions of coverage don't always match real life, so nothing is better than getting the actual lenses and putting them on the camera and taking a look.

Post footage!!! :)

I'm in no rush at all... Im still getting amazing images out of my MX chip.
Not one client has asked for a 4k master yet. 2k or HD is enough for now (in there eyes) So who am I to argue.
How ever I'm starting to get asked for lots of stills from our shoots. Which is a nice side earner.
A clean 2000asa would be nice, thats about all I need at the moment.

When ever it's done is fine with me. Don't send it out till its perfect.

"All I need" indeed. In another thread, I mentioned how Epic Dragon will likely be the last camera we ever need. The real world basically never has more dynamic range than exactly what Dragon delivers, and 6K is too much resolution, so if the color science is charming - that's it. No more A-cameras until our Epic wears out. (B cameras might get some crash cams, etc., but likely we'll just continue to rent)

Until 8k and 70mm sensors come along ofcourse.. :D

I'm wondering if my RPPs will cover well at 5.5 or 6kon Dragon. I honestly couldn't care less about anything over 3k for video. Actually even 1080p can still blow me away. I'm just curious about the higher resolution lens coverage for photo work, as 4k really isn't enough for that.

Jarred have you guys called up Cooke, Zeiss, Angenieux to try the new Anamorphics on Dragon?

Plenty of people here are ready to upgrade once they see an image, any image...
but if you want to impress the folks who look at Red from afar... there are a lot of eyes pointed at Anamorphic right now.

All S35 2X anamorphic lenses should work just fine at 6K ANA with Dragon.

The "y axis" on Red Epic Dragon 6K is very close to the height of Super 35mm Academy.

No reason to freak out on the anamorphic front if you ask me. Only reasons to party. Especially since there are so many lens options now.

Oh I'm not worried about how they'll fit. Your chart made me asd;lkjing excited to see how they will look :)

Isn't anamorphic generaly cinemascope? (18.6mm vs academy's 16mm). Dragon is 15mm vertically right so really close to normal academy but not Super35 academy? There's still a larger difference between Dragon and Cinemascope than MX -> Dragon.

Yes. Generally speaking traditional anamorphic lenses are designed to cover S35 4-perf Full Aperture, which is why we really won't see coverage issues. Red Epic Dragon is 15.8mm tall, closer to Academy's 16mm. I've seen folks shoot S35 Full and Academy with anamorphics at this point. I don't think the moderate loss in height is going to greatly decrease anamorphic's appeal or actual use however.

Some folks desire a taller sensor for this reason, but it would increase the cost and yield on manufacturing for the most part and at this point most folks capture in Full, 2:1, HD, and WS aspect ratios and you still have better ANA performance on Dragon compared to Mysterium. You get into a battle of how tall and how wide you want the sensor to be at some point.

Based on my initial tests and research on lens coverage I'm feeling more and more like 6K was the right target resolution when it comes to projected image circles. More testing and observations will be needed though just so everybody's bases are covered.

And believe me, I'm interested! I'm about to drop coin on cinema primes.
