Dragon Update

Guys we are hitting June and still no moving images from this baby.. believe me when I say i'm a true loyalist to Red and I understand everything they must be doing to achieve the Dragon, but as a producer and a Rental owner, I need to have some estimate REAL dates on when can we count with this beast.

I'm not ok with waking up one morning and realise a post has been written at 5am and suddenly Dragon is available and I don't have enough time to set apart all the projects I'm involved in, to send my camera for the upgrade.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not bitching, I'm just needing some info I can trust, in order to organize my life for the next few months.

Technically if you already signed up for Dragon your spots reserved already. Plus they said based on peoples shoot schedules they could juggle it around. Between that and your Scarlet I am sure they can work with you to get the timing well. I think the problem is they didn't expect the delay themselves...Which goes back to they not wanting hard dates too early in the process because when the time tables don't work out stuff like this happens... I wouldn't worry too much, they will be accommodating...Or you can subrent and budget that in if push really comes to shove... But I am sure they will give you enough notice and accommodation that it won't derail your schedule

Good luck with that. ;)

I got about 24 hours warning before my Epic upgrade came up. Obviously it was booked out for a couple weeks and wasn't able to send it in until I was on another continent. :p I imagine Dragon will similarly just suddenly drop.

I'm sure they didn't expect the delay themselves.. I've been working great with my Bomb Squad rep, but that doesn't mean they cannot send us some sort of real aprox timetable.. Or at least some images.. I mean, we are not talking about some petite investment, at least from where I'm from. I would love to subrent other camera, however, I am the only Epic owner in my country and I am already subrenting the other 2 Scarlets here, so that is not really an option. :(

Noted.

As you can see.. The Dragon roll out is happening a little differently than we have in the past. I promise you there wont be a sudden email from out of nowhere that goes out that says " ok send your camera in or you loose your spot ".

We are keeping the progress very internal... there will be a stage where the testing becomes much more public, you will start seeing footage and test results, and you will start to get a better sense of when notification will happen.

There is still work to do.. the Dragon has more than we are squeezing out of it. We are sitting on one of the best sensors in the world and it deserves the time to make sure it is the best that it can be.

With an obvious bias, we believe that the Epic MX is still the best camera you can currently be shooting with and even though Dragon is on everyone's mind, the waiting is made a little easier with the tools most of you already have in your hands.

As you can probably tell this is very hard for us.. Jim and I are horrible at containing our excitement. I can't tell you how many times We have almost posted a taste here or there over the last little while :)

you guys should get drunk and start posting away :) i wont be upset.

Thanks for the update Jarred!

Jarred,
Thanks for the update. One question I have is concerning the Rocket-x, will that not be released until the Dragon is shipping? I sold my Rocket right after NAB thinking Dragon was eminent, now I'm twisting in the wind with shoots upcoming and no Rocket. Any update would certainly be appreciated.

Ouch.. I think we posted shipping in summer and It's not even summer yet :(

You still have some time to wait. Hopefully you can borrow or steal someone else's Rocket till then.

First batch is looking like last week of July and the pre-orders pretty much gobbled all those up ( hopefully you are in that group )

Wow, how did I miss that posting! What a tactical error on my part. I guess I'm in the market for an original Rocket right now. Thanks for setting me straight.

Heh heh no worries Steve... its not like we have much credibility with our dates anyways, I am not surprised you glossed right over that bit of info :)

Jarred, I read this stuff religiously. I'm giving myself a good ole fashion butt kickin right now for missing that!

Jarred-
Is end of summer a realistic goal for Dragon, or are we looking at more like a 6 month push at this point?
Thanks,

-Harry

Hi Jarred! Thank you very much for the response.. this (you personally getting in touch with us) is part of what I believe makes RED so great, and this is why I stick up with you guys.. I bet this sort of posts must definitely increase your excitement to post some things.. we are extremely eager as well..

I'm happy to hear something from you guys 'cause the silent from the past weeks regarding delivery dates has been dreadful, despite the fact you've already adress about this new "silence" in past posts.. Maybe a word here and there every other week would really help us to see where we are standing..

Epic is a magnificent camera! by far the best I've ever owned :)

Thanks for the update Jarred!
It's funny to know about you and Jim being so tempted to post something while we are on the other end waiting so eagerly for some new bits. How many times did you two nearly hit the send button while we have checked this forum at the same time?

Take your time with the release, it's worth it.

But hopefully you or Jim will press that send-button sooner than later. Hehe

So the first dragons will be beta only, not suitable for production etc for a while then?
j

Right now the Dragons are many, many times more stable than when we shipped the first Epics. Getting the camera to work isn't what we are working on, it is fine tuning the sensor.. the icing on the cake. So yeah, as with any new product the first ones out will be a bit Janky, but we have already made those. We started actually doing the sensor upgrades at NAB remember. We have made a ton of Dragon cameras already. Once the sensor is tuned.. the power boards are in, its a pretty " safe " upgrade ( I am sure I just jinxed it.. )

WOW, I can't imagine how many NDA's are in effect right now. I'm assuming somewhere, in this world (or around LA), there are some "Janky" Dragons quietly breathing fire, in the hands of some Top Secret DPs.

heh heh.. the Janky ones never made it out of the cage :)

Thanks for the update Maestro!
Cheers from Brazil
