  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update + A.D.D.

What will be interesting to me is ..... the effect of ADD vs. compression ratio :)

It is possible that ADD's effects could create a little "reverse compression" with respect to detail ....

Anyway ... I look forward to trying to break it - and leverage the $%#& out of it.

I've been thinking about this too. How ADD will affect VIDEO renders. For small agency spots, or crucial scenes, could be a killer app worth a 24hr render.

If you are right, this could have a huge effect on high frame rates. Could possibly transform exposure in recovering lost light when shooting HFR? This is sounding better and better!

I suspect the effect on HFR will be exact the same as the effect on non HFR. I doubt frame rate has any relevance at all. And it's not going to add more light to the sensor. It might reduce noise and enhance detail in lower light exposures - but that has nothing to do with frame rate - anyway - we can speculate and speculate ... I'd rather test :)

Yeah, that's the best approach.

My brain goes into HFR sometimes while trying to apply new info to my own situation. I look forward to your tests and trust you and others will tease out best practices for real world uses.

This sounds great. Can't wait to see the difference!

heh heh.. I still remember the day you took your Avatar photo Roberto. Seems like a lifetime ago.

Hey Jarred,
Got my Dragon today. Awesome! How can I get a cool shot in the Epic-M owners section? I wanna be a Rock Star like Casey Green!!!

The higher the frame rate, the greater the correlation between pixel readings in adjacent frames. The optimum 24fps image would (educated guess) come from recording 96fps, and temporally processing 4 (or more) frames.

That is given that shutter/compression is not part of the equation...

Excited to send my Scarlet off to receive a brand new Dragon. Going to have to continue to be patient, hopefully it happens before I head to Paris for late April.

So the first group of the EPIC-M owners and early adopters should be close to having their Dragon upgrades finished in early April which would seem to indicate a very long wait is coming up. I do not have the numbers but this group must be tiny in comparison to stage 2? Jarred said the pace will pickup with more cameras coming in but it would need to accelerate by a large factor or people near the end of this list may be looking at mid year 2014 or later? Please, I hope I am totally wrong.

I might be oversimplifying this :

REC OPTION 1 : Every 1/24th of a second 1 pic is taken lasting 1/48th of a second.
REC OPTION 2 : Every 1/24th of a second 4 pics are taken each lasting 1/96th of a second.
OUTPUT : 24fps @ 1/48sec.

What I am speculating is that recording from OPTION 2 could be used for a superior ADD algorithm.

Reasons
=====
+) 4 x the temporal resolution
+) Access to temporal frames before and after the current frame in OPTION 2 - that do not exist in OPTION 1.

And I'm speculating that you are totally wrong :)

I speculate that the "optimal" 24fps images using ADD will be a 24fps acquired with the absolute LOWEST possible compression in 6K.

I would also speculate that using ADD on footage when forced to a lower compression at the same resolution due to shooting higher frame rate - would help counter image fidelity hit due to higher compression.
