  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Update + A.D.D.

Not to get confusing.. but A.D.D. was actually born out of motion so you shouldn't run into that issue. We have exported a ton of motion + A.D.D. and projected it up on our 30 foot screen just to make sure :)

A.D.D Leverages not only the surrounding pixels but the surrounding pixels in surrounding frames... something that really makes Dragon a step ahead of all of the DSLRs.

Yowsers - time to maybe re-think that Hasselblad purchase.

The picture I get in my head is some sort of handshake between frames causing them to take on characteristics based on how surrounding frames and pixels look. Does that mean frames will become graduated to resemble those adjoining?

If this be true, will that affect how motion looks?... meaning smoother.

I think A.D.D sounds like it is going to have a massive impact on the stills side right away when extracting stills for photographic prints.

Will this mean maybe more than 72DPI .TIFF still snapshots from Dragon footage? That would be very cool! If not I am sure the tiffs will be amazing out of the box.

Battistella

David, not sure I understand. What do you mean with 72DPI?
The DPI setting for an image is just meta data, just like iso in an r3d file. If you want any other DPI you just change it. It got nothing to do with the quality of the picture it's just a number that tells your printer how big you want your image to be when it lands on a paper...

RCXP sets the DPI to 72 as that is an old standard value for images made for screens. Old Flames and other programs got difficulty reading tiffs at any other DPI than 72.

So is it similar to frame summing (or averaging), but in post? Could something similar be done with MX (just to a lesser extent)? Any chance of an example (presumably TIFF)?

ADD sounds good to my ears, but isn't quiet the good news a producer would have expected : longer rendering time to obtain the best quality. I wonder how to sell this?

Pat

I think you answered your own ?, LOL!

The Mini-SSD Side Carbon Module has finally hit green light status and is now entering pilot run production. They should start shipping to existing Carbon Dragon owners later next month. Just for reference, it takes about 15 hours to make each Side SSD Carbon Module. They are much more complex than the normal full-size carbon SSD modules with their own integrated passive cooling system and entirely new mechanicals.

Can't wait to get my hands on a Dragon, thanks Jarred for the update.

How much lighter will the mini-ssd carbon module make the current 4lb body?

ADD sounds great! Will there be an update for RCX to take advantage of the multiple GPU's on the new Mac Pro? That might speed up the processing time for motion sequences considerably!

Ok but 13 days of render for a feature is a long wait. ;-)

Pat

So and so... not many years ago it was about 30 seconds per frame printed and about 3 dollars per frame

At least these days we do not have those costs....

Then also you got to consider, rendering on 2 computers, you got 7 days,Rendering on 13 computers it's done tomorrow,26 computers its done tonight...

Large Render farms have been standard in the post industry since the scissors and optical printers where abandoned.

It's just the last couple of years of "HD and 2k" is enough people even considered to work on a single machine :)

Hi Corey,

I asked Jarred this a good while back and, believe it was under the thread concerning those who ordered CFD and when they received the camera. My recollection is that the net savings in mag and module was about 100 grams, but, I really don't have that in my memory bank. Gonna trade the large one out anyway.

Thank you very much

fury

Thanks Nick, I missed that thread in my search.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how light this camera is already. Not even considering the sensor, the carbon body itself is ridiculously impressive.

You would not render a feature on one PC. If you can render via Redline than you can do distributed rendering. Or ... you can always use one PC system per reel. 5 reels cooking at the same time. But what matters the most is that this gets into the SDK - so that all the various color grading / finishing systems have the option - that is what is critical. We don't want to be forced back to a DPX intermediate file just to use this magic.

Ah..… Temporal denoise... probably using some kind of difference-keying to isolate and protect motion. This is has been a very powerful denoise solution for compositors for years. Excited to see something like this implemented in RCX.

And yes, a stills camera could never incorporate this.

I have been thinking about this ... turning it over in my head a bit ... and it could be a REALLY BIG #%@*ING DEAL if it does what I think it does. Counting the seconds to test ....

This is awesome news! I wish I already had my Dragon when I was shooting 120fps in low available light the other night so I could use A.D.D. on it! Sounds like I might be getting my upgrade email in a couple of weeks,,,can't wait!

Great News!
Jarred, Im a bit confused. Im an original epic m owner and signed up for the upgrade on the first day it was available around 13:00 the day it was available, but I have yet to receive an upgrade notification, and there are a bunch of other M owners who signed up around my time also. Can you help me understand when our notification to send in our M's might be?
Thanks so much!

I can think of a handful of really "big" things you can do with accessing frame and pixel data this way. Can't wait to see how A.D.D. performs.

There is endless of ways to improve debarring some really good automatic ways that is more or less computing heavy and some that makes things even better with a bit of user input.

For example they could make sliders high frequency detail transfer from the green photo sites to the blue, that could be brought up when shooting tungsten and it would drastically eliminate most of the blue specle when balancing the image if it's done at the debayering stage.
