  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon misconceptions and clarification...

That was my instinct, has anyone tested the two methods side by side with results we can reference? I'd like to see this "bloom" effect on the rolloffs vs RAW in a motion clip.

i dont know about side by side but i use low cons a lot with the epic. it's pretty subtle unless you have large areas of he frame that are blown out. I've used up to Low Con 1 - see the Dove Dwayne Wade spot on my online reel.

Quoth Jim: "I really don’t think I can ever top it. We’ll see."

We'll be watching and waiting for more. Why not? It's been a fun ride all along.

I think Jim Jannard would have a hard time fully retiring!
Look how quickly he started Red after Oakley was Sold.
I also believe he has earned himself time to do what he loves.
Jim loves his family, Fun, and Cameras!
Don't give up any, readjust priorities; add more of the first two and reduce the third.
Pull back on the reigns a bit and enjoy the ride.
You have an awesome team assembled at RED!

Just keep kicking ass, Jim. You're seriously good at it.

Can't wait to get my Dragons!

Jim,

I don't think anyone truly retires. You will always want to do what you do, wherever you are. Fiji is not going anywhere. It'd be a good getaway for a few months out of the year, but will you ever be REALLY tired about all the important things you've brought to the community, the incredible teams you've built, the amazing products that have changed all of our lives? My guess is no, you won't be, because you are absolutely passionate about doing all of that.

An authentic description of excellence, is only hype for those who cannot bring themselves to see the excellence.

Very elegantly and eloquently put, as is your style.

As eloquent and elegant as the camera itself.

Thanks for your vision, sacrifice and the dedication that inspired your team.

It's an honor to add my gratitude and respect to the chorus.

Is this potential LowCon OLPF for MX or Dragon or Both?

Also, in terms of a post-filter, negative "clarity" values (-0.300) drastically expand what would otherwise look like clipped highlights. Problem is it blurs out the rest of the image as well (it'd be nice to be able to say "Apply to pixels brighter than: xxIRE")... And the Alchemy group isn't available in any apps other than RCX, so it means you have to transcode away from REDraw.

Haters goin' hate, Mr. Jannard. If everything turns out as promised and we can expect images like those that have been released thus far (without mass malfunctioning, mind you), this is the best camera in the world. The industry should be thanking you, not criticizing you.

Thanks, man.

Well, RED implied that ISO was changed in Dragon. MX ISO *does* affect dynamic range. RED suggested that Dragon would be different somehow.
As long as the raw acquisition concept without processing, only compressed applies- which is the core of the RED image acquisition philosophy ISO influence on the DR remains.. just like pulling or pushing film stock...
When RED announces they are processing the image before recording (i.e. apply gain) it will change...

So you get the same 16+ stops of latitude at 200 asa as you do at 2000 with the Dragon. No latitude penalty when you lower ASA. Which means when you are shooting outside, less ND filters. Less IR issues, better images.

The Dragon has more native dynamic range than any motion capture camera ever made as measured by the standard engineering definition… signal to noise ratio. And it does it with the least amount of noise.

Hi Jim,
what is RED's methodology for measuring S/N?

There is a TV engineering standard for electronic cameras, which for 20 years has and still is very accurate when comparing cameras between manufacturers.
I'm told its done with a with a calibrated light box at 3200K 2000 lux S/N is measured with a Shibasoku s/n meter with gamma off and 20mV black level.

I was impressed in the early days when you quoted a S/N for RED when the others declined.

What is the industry accepted engineering standard for measuring S/N on a D cinema camera, surely it is not the above method using a HDSDI output but an agreed way of measuring a raw file?

To state the obvious, low cons affect all of the image in some way, not just highlights.

That's the quote I was looking for but couldn't find.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers use a different methodology measuring S/N. The best bet is to have a single independent 3rd party do it and reference all cameras to the same methodology. We are in the process of doing just that.

I am old. I am tired.

Bullshit.

64 is no age to mention if you make sure to eat healthy, exercise regularly and get a minimum of 6 hours of sleep (8 optimally) every night. Pick all three ;-)

Unfortunately, creating the best camera in the world is no excuse for staying healthy ;-)
