DRAGON - ITS THE REAL DEAL !!!!

I can't tell Elsie if you're saying you liked the Dragon footage better or what, ...

Sorry for the ambiguity... Yes I liked the Dragon footage better. No disrespect for Mark's demo reel but I think the Dragon footage should become his new reel. Pretty amazing what he put together in such a short time. He was somewhat famous before but I think his fame just grew exponentially, especially here on REDuser.

Blame me, not the camera, I'm a bit colour blind. :) Easily fixed.

Isn't that an effect of the filters also? MX's rolloff into white is quite nice w/o the filtration, so in theory the Dragon's should be even gentler.

Just watch Mark's demo reel... while the footage is amazing to watch, I got a different feel watching it and the Dragon footage. Not sure what cameras were used in his demo reel but I'm satisfied the footage went through a finish while the Dragon footage was only adjusted somewhat using RCX.

That's correct...
If I could have graded in Resolve or something else I would have. But for shots pretty much out of the camera and run through RCX with very minimal adjustment... I think we are in a very good place pushing forward.
Plus you must remember, all the images you see on my show reel are designed to fit into a TV commercial or film.. so a grade style is created for each. In this case, I just wanted to grade generically...

Mark,

Thanks so much for your hard work time and insight.

What lenses did you use with the tests here please ?

Dave

Glad to hear there is other colored blind RED shooters out there Mark... haha
I always have to double check my grades with my other half haha....sometimes shes like thats REALLY blue haha

Looking good Mark. Not only did you get me excited about the imagery but you also got me stoked to go surf this morning.
Great job and thank you!

Can't wait for dragon to start with upgrades! Great stuff mark.

Very nice, however I'm a bit disappointed in seeing quite harsh magenta highlights around 4:26-27.

Yeah looks like that hasn't changed, maybe even got worse at ISO250. As always avoid lower ISOs where it's worst and fix it in post or hope it gets fixed in post... At least with dragon it's probably even easier to justify always shooting at higher ISOs since noise is less of an issue, and with the extra DR it's also even easier to avoid blown out whites altogether so the magenta highlights never show up...

Lovely imagery!

I love how much dynamic range the Dragon is capable of, and most of all I just love the aesthetics of the image, how the sensor sees the light, its a beautiful thing to watch.

However, it's still a shame that Dragon still hasn't managed to handle clipped highlights and rolloff. Is one of those things that gave Red a bad rep in the beginning and kept me and a lot of people of using Red for a long time, and it's a shame that it still exists to this day, regardless of how many other things have improved... It's not that anyone needs clipped highlights ever, Dragon should be able to give us pure white and a smooth gradual rolloff. If Alexa managed this, Surely Dragon could do this, no? Still wondering if shooting with less compression this would improve?

Anyways, its not anything that can't be easily handled by a more accurate exposure, a bit of fill and a tasteful grading.

Thanks to Mark for this wonderful test and congratulations to the Red team. Movies are looking better thanks to Red!

Thanks Mark!is 17:1 currently the lowest redcode you can use at 100fps 6k on standard 128 cards?is 8:1 lowest RC for 24fps on standard cards?I'm sure it's annoying being under a microscope to the world for this time, but you are doing it with style.all your moves are very elegant in this test!I might have to save up for some of those turbo super 512 cards if they are needed for lower redcode ;)

The Alexa from what i understand has a built in 1/4 diffusion filter which rolls off the highlights. Red seem to not include a built in one as they want to give people full control and add one if they want. I'm a huge fan of the Hollywood Blackmagic filters.

Well, I am just glad to see some footage, feel privileged in a way and Mark has posted his reasons for shooting, and who are we to question him anyway.
I dont see this as a test in anyway shape or form, and feels its very unfair to question Mark about any of his reasons, we should be just pleased that he shared something.

Andrew.
