  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon in the UK

Thanks John. That is really appreciated. That is what I am looking for. Images of people. Just ordinary shots where the camera is not being stress tested (though that has been useful too). It is looking very promising given that the colour science has not yet been implemented.

The irony is that we considered this a stress test! We did none of the things we're all used to doing in order to make people look good in harsh sunlight. We used no bounce cards, no silks, no lens diffusion... We let the sun hit the lens hard and we shot under pretty dim tungsten. We were actually laughing out loud on the shoot, because we couldn't make bad images despite really trying dumb stuff.

Nice work John!

I'm just curious as to how long the upgrade took to perform from the UK. Is it one of those "ship back to California" things like when we got the heat sink upgrades for the Epic-M? If so I guess I'll have to look at scheduling a month without the camera... :(

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case now at such an early stage, but has anyone heard whether there are plans for the upgrades to happen locally once the programme rolls out a bit further?

Upgrades will be handled in CA. I've no idea whether the lead time on my upgrade was in any way indicative, as things are obviously different right now. What I can say is that the guys at Red Europe are prepared and bracing themselves for an influx of upgrades. Every one of them does need individually shipping out and re-importing, but its a tried and tested process for them, far slicker than when I've ever needed to handle that kind of unusual high value return shipping for myself. They have you covered :)

are there any restrictions as to what you can post? 6k TIFFs would be nice. :- )

I'll check with Jarred... I've posted full res JPG, mostly out of practicality. TIFFs are well over 100mb per frame ;)

Oh I see. I guess your right - you made it look all too easy. I have wanted to find a reason for not upgrading but you are making it very difficult.

Thanks for the info John. How long did it take overall?

Very impressed John! Beautiful subject and beautiful images from Dragon!

Congratulations John- you certainly kept that well hidden when you came in the other day. Have you considered a career in espionage? :)

Haha. Sorry Jeff, I felt really bad... It was in the car outside (!)

Congrats John...Keep sharing...we are all cherishing this new born coming to our world...

Something less pretty, but very interesting. This should be self explanatory with any luck - you're looking at a tungsten lamp split into a spectrum with a custom prism rig I built for this purpose. IR contamination is the stripe to the right of the red...

Dragon kicks ass on this front. Comparable IR contamination to Epic-X only arrives by the time you have 7 stops of regular ND added, AND the grade pushed a couple more stops... So you can put all the ND you own up front, miss your exposure by a country mile, and still only have as much IR as the old camera.

Short version: IR is not an issue.

I'll run this under true daylight too, but from experience a tungsten lamp only four feet from camera tends to be worst case for this test.

By the way, don't stress about grain in the image - this is a crop from a tiny tiny area of the sensor.

Nice John. This looks pretty darn good. Magic new IROLPF seems to be doing the trick.
