  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm extremely grateful and proud that due to some exceptional opportunities, and exceptional people like Jarred, we now have our Dragon.

All the video and stills are just white balanced, no additional correction.

I'll share as much as I can as we get into the camera. I've given a few impressions already over on the upgrade thread in Recon... I'm blown away.
 
Some stills... All shot full 6k, on a 35mm MP.
No colour correction beyond a white balance. EXIF data via flickr if you want to dig into it.

Click each one for full size jpg. I'll describe a little more alongside them shortly from a tech point of view. All the interiors are tungsten, the exteriors are full afternoon sun, no bounce, no silks, no anything.

Congrats on dragon upgrade! How does it feel to have a new camera all over again?

Was this rc3rg3 or the new rc4rg4?
 
A quick note: I know people are going to ask for side-by-side, whether with Epic MX or a brand X... I'll say right now that I do have a bit of a philosophical problem with side-by-side comparisons. Having shot a few, watched more than a few, I know that somebody will always have a bone to pick with it.

Inherently side by side testing is unfair - I got pulled up on our Monochrome vs. Epic-X tests because we shot at matching ISOs... putting the X at a 'disadvantage'. Fact is, when two cameras are not equal, the test will always be unfair in someones opinion.

I like to try and be scientific. A scientific test would take place having changed only one variable, RED have just changed a hundred variables. i've put the cameras side by side, and the differences are such as to be meaningless, unless I hobble the Dragon to match ISO and resolution... and then what's the point.

If you are the kind of guy to wait and see before upgrading. Then my only advice is to certainly do that, but when you rent, borrow or demo a Dragon - just shoot and see if your footage looks better. Nothing else matters.
 
And disclaimer over with - yeah its an absolute blast having a whole new camera. It really 'feels' different. We are blessed, and I will do my best to share.

This is RC3 RG3. I kept the ISO around 800. Exteriors all used ordinary Tiffen 1.2ND with no IR cut. Black manmade fibre swimsuit in the hot sun was deliberate and didn't contaminate at all - just looked like it did in person :)

The skin tones look really good. And no IR! That's great to hear. Are you posting any of this on Odemax?
 
John, do you remember your spot in the initial R1 que? First 25 or so?

This is good for everyone. Our upgrades will trickle down to make more Epic X available on the used market, possibly even helping some Scarlet's upgrade. Everyone wins today!

One of the key things in my opinion is that the 'out of the box' colour, given correct white balance, is already so good. I've got all the usual room for adjustment, and then more besides... but I find myself not wanting to get stuck into each and every image to find what I wanted from it.
 
Congrats, nice color rendering really.. Do you think that perhaps you can post some shots with RLF-RC3?. I think, RLF renders even better skin tones, but I could be wrong, thanks.
