  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon Flare

We hope you do David, and look forward to some nice Tuscany Dragon shots... Mean while say hallo to my beloved city of Florence... ;)

Thanks Ketch,

Going out through the city right now to do a scout. Florence says hello back.

I got my Dragon a few weeks ago. The old OLPF is crazy. You get ugly flares like hell.
I like to shoot wide open with a lot of flaring etc. I must say that the old OLPF is not usable for my style of shooting.
I'm a little amazed that Red let this thing out of HQ at the first place. But the Redteam is on it and that's great to hear.

Now to the positive side of things. Dragon is killer in lowlight. 1600 - 2000 ASA are very very good. This thing sees more than my eyes in darkness. This is awesome. This is huge.
The colors look nice too. The fan is very quiet. Sometimes you may think the camera is not on. So shut up sound guys.:001_tt2:

At first I was very pissed because of the OLPF thing. Sending cameras to RED back and forth costs a lot of money and you loose money during the waiting time by renting other cams. But and that's a big but - Dragon is really worth it. This thing is only at the beginning and I can clearly see where it is going. The color science is not even here and I'm sure Jarred and the gang are on this baby like crazy.
Dragon will be great, no doubt no doubt.

Just some thoughts.

That's great Tim,

Secretly, I'd like to get my upgrade before you get your OLPF upgraded because at least you have had your Dragon in your hands. :)
I know the wait will be worth it.

To me the OLPF thing is minor, had no problem with it so far. I even have a struggle to make it visible. Today we shoot with dragon and mx side by side. MX doing 4x4k set stitched panoramas with summicon 25mm and the dragon on a big crane with a 30-300mm canon zoom that sadly does not cover more than 5k up to 90mm..

The summicons looks smashing on the dragon. Considering the camera is so good with lowlight I think those lenses are a very good option even though they only stop down to 2.0.

Any pioneering tech company is going to stumble sometimes - it comes with the territory. That said, I think Jarred is more chapped about the OLPF issue than anything else that has ever happened at RED. Over the years I have defended RED numerous times by pointing out faults in the premise used to criticize them. On this one I just shut up and let the critics get their licks in.

FWIW just ask BM how difficult it is to get an OLPF right for high resolution motion imaging...

As Tim noted, the issues with the original Dragon OLPF can be very prominent in some situations, YMMV.

I did want to note that the Canon 30-300 Cinema zoom is a terrific lens, like you I really wish it could handle a larger image circle - but that might add quite a bit of weight/size.

100% agree that with the newest sensor tech T2.0 is plenty fast and these days I'd only seek out T1.3 or T1.4 glass if it served the creative intent - rather than just to get enough exposure.
